"Do you believe that? The family is important, but what is a family if you can not tell who is who and speak on why which on is important to the family. Dhairiss for example...there's nothing special about him. My father has a son already, who's far more capable and more claimable by looks alone, and he's just a clinger who is also another mouth to feed. Getting rid of him would be for the well-being of the family, in theory." One of those times he was glad his brother didn't understand most things at this age...not that he felt that way about his brother, he loved him to death, but he was making an example.

Dhairiss made a noise and nodded against her chest, quite happy to sit there in her lap and cling to her. He didn't like the way mommy and daddy had felt at all.

He mimicked her look, tilting his head some as well. "Of course I did, haven't I always? I can't have one of my children on the verge of a breakdown of tears because they're so scared of things they should not have to worry about." Closing his eyes a brief moment with a sigh. "I do wish he didn't remember Khaiver though..." Giving a light smirk to his wife then. "It's hard for him to admit to things, just like it is for any teenager. But the important thing is that he man's up and admits them."

He thought about it a moment, letting his fingers play with each other in his lap and watching them as he did think on the subject. Yes, he did...but they weren't coming. They wouldn't show up halfway through a competition to surprise him and they wouldn't be there to clap him on the back when he did do well. "Yeah I would...but some things just aren't like you want them to be."

She just shook her head. "And you're still as thick skulled and unbearable. Do yourself a favor and take care of your own plane and we'll take care of ours. Next time you show up here, things may not be so civil toward you. Far as those here are concerned...you are a Messenger and Bringer of Ruin. Perhaps that will help with you attitude." Turning her attention to Justwysper again. "Justwysper, well met and thank you." Thusly a nod to Kieran and both headed out of the room and back to the inn. Well...that was one problem down. But there were still others.

She smiled almost amused as she glided fingertips over the orb, watching the stillness, the monotony...same thing everyday even with the D'vinns and Inthara's gone. Good. Predictibility was oh so splended when it helped you more than those that made the actions possible and labeled as such. Tournament was over now...they would be home soon. Things were going as planned, people were where they needed to be and only the breifest of suspicion had been cast...and they couldn't even figure that out. A laugh that was fullof dark mirth...oh the joy of things going your way. The days and weeks to come would be fabulous.

Kaelin thought about it for a moment and then glanced down at the child snuggled up to her. "When he grows up he will become valuable to the family as a whole and take his rightful place. His skills will not be your skills just as his looks are not your looks. It is too early to tell what worth he will bring to the family. If the answer is none, then something must be done. But that time is still far off."

She watched the boy and got the strangest feeling that he felt like crying. Reaching over, she tilted his chin up gently and gave him a smile. "It's okay to admit those kinds of things, though. It's not okay to throw a fit over them or cause a scene because of selfishness, but there is nothing wrong with wanting them here. What keeps them away?"

Zahara nodded, then lightly rubbed her hand along his arm. "Khaiver had a large impact on his life at a really young age and was the first one to really hurt him, aside from us anyway. But he learned a valuable lesson from that encounter, even if I wish it hadn't come quite that young..." But there was nothing to be done about that. "He's learning. Did you two resolve something else? I heard him hesitantly tell you he loved you." She chuckled, it was amusing that the boy had gone back to the phrase so often used when he was younger to communicate it.

Justwysper looked at her husband after they left.

"you are insufferable sometimes, you know that?"

"Yes. but more often than not, I'm right. There is something about that elf that strikes me odd. something worth keeping attention on. And I will not risk Neriak gaining a friend in Labyrinth."

Malik was bored out of his mind, laying there, just staring at the wall at the moment. he wanted to get up, and to move, and to get things underway to be ready to go home and confront the problems no doubt gathering in thier absence. Maybe he should get himself a few new pets. but he really, really didn't want to deal with the primary supplier of those.

"But it is important to live in the here and now down here. Anyone follows that logic...so by that, there' no need to wait for later because he's a burden now. One can always have more children." Going quiet for a moment before a shake of his head. "But no one should be looked at that way. It's just wrong."

"They're went on a vacation together. Needed a break from the stress of life." That was a mild way to put it he guessed. After all...they had indeed taken a vacation from life. A permanent one. "It's okay, I'll see them when I go home when tournament is over." Maybe those he'd met here would forget about him and then the problems would be gone.

"Still...just someone I'd rather keep out of everyone's mind." He should of killed him when he had the chance...but he had been too young then to realize that Khaiver was the enemy, not the mentor. "Let's just say that he's not as detached from me as he thinks he wants to be. Some thing Sweetheart are just meant to be between father and son."

"Okay you. Let's try to keep you occupied, hm?"

((Whee Switch because no one likes being hurt and there's evil afoot))

Two weeks....well, at least things were back to normal. Malikhai was up and about, Malik was back to his old self as well. She was just happy at the stress was down. Well not all the stress...but enough so that she could function and wasn't a pain in everyone's side. She hated it when she was like that. Currently she was outside...playing with Serino of all things. Apparently some sort of game of tag or something. Yup, still the same sweet playful Piper underneath it all. Helped keep her mind off of this 'horse thief' business for the moment.

Anytime now...all would be right. Just had to wait for the opportunity...Malik was never off his guard. Sevilin was never off his guard either and those extra runics over the weeks had made her chuckle...oh silly men. They thought they were keeping the predators out. Walls didn't keep her out....magics didn't keep her out....

"Please, please, please...just stop crying, Kel. Or tell me what's wrong..." He cried when she put him down and cried still when she picked him up. She'd tried a cup of juice, distracting him with toys, tickling his tummy, even bouncing him. Nothing was working and she was getting really frustrated. Setting the distraught child back in his playpen, she went back to making dinner for when everyone got home from their various activities during the day. She was damn near tears herself, listening to her fifteenth month old sob for that long and knowing she couldn't do anything to help him. "Sevilin?!"

Kelligrin was inconsolable. He had been left out. He had been forgotten and he was not happy. Daddy hadn't even shown up to give him a hug and a kiss or get him from his crib that morning. Sitting in his playpen, he continued to sob, pausing every once in a while to cough and choke and then right back to the sobbing. Mommy had taken away his cup, too and all his toys after he'd kept throwing them.

"I GOT ONE!" Screamed out as loud as she could as she tugged and tugged and tugged on that stick that was holding her line in the murky water. "DADDY! I GOT ONE!" Yes, Lyssie was quite excited, jumping up and down and still tugging, though she was afraid the string was going to break. Faate was sitting, quite bored, but dutifully holding her line and watching...as nothing happened. Why had she agreed to come on this trip anyway? Oh yes, because she'd been thinking she'd get some time to cajole her father into letting Mykorian come for a visit. And now her sister was screeching. "Lyssie...you're going to scare it away if you don't shut up!" she hissed.

Two weeks had come and pass and Galesen had an idea what had happened at the tournament, he saw the way Malik was after-wards the elf seemed like he gotten the s**t beaten out of him. Though still it seemed like nothing had changed since then. But now he was busy in the arena, he was holding a bow in one had while the other pulled back on the string that had an arrow on it, he was aiming at a target from 20 yards away. Still he never used a bow much but it didn't hurt to learn how so he was glad that Piper had taught him how to use one years ago.

Silence filled the room as he stood there aiming carefully. He waited, waited, and waited some more before he released the arrow. It whizzed through the air and a soft thump could be heard as it hit the target he set up on the barrel of hay. When he got close Galesen noticed that the arrow didn't hit dead center but got close enough. "Better than nothing..." He muttered and took the arrow out and walked back to the yard line he made for himself, time to do it again.

Malik was becoming more and more irate. this interloper had not been found, horse thieves were getting bolder with their apparently long ago acquired weapons and tools.

"unacceptable."

his voice was cold, callous, and certainly not the voice someone wanted to hear when they were under his dominion. turning from his maps to the tier'dal mage standing in his study.

"there are too many things at stake to see failure in my House. I want this interloper detected. I want them brought down and I want them to know the true definition of pain and suffering."

Grabbing the mage by his robes and jerking him within and inch of each other, his eyes like steel.

"Anyone outside the prearranged list, who does not have valid reason and proof of thier reason, that is weilding a weapon of elven origin is to be detained. if they resist, consider them in league with our enemy and arrest them for interrogation, or kill them if needed."

shoving him back a bit.

"I do not want to be forced to ask Sathir for assistance. let the Droag free, particularly those with assassin training and skill. I want this place scoured, our lands patrolled constantly. use the sentinal magics, use the eyes of xomm, whatever it takes. I want to know if a worm is burrowing within a fifteen mile radius of my home."

He had been monitoring it all for some time now, his son's distress as well as his wife's. Seemed she couldn't get the boy to calm down and was just getting worse off herself. But his attention was dragged back to his children as one screamed in joy and the other scolded. "Don't talk to your sister like that." Getting up to help his youngest daughter reel in her fish and make it seem like she did all the work. "Well...that's a right good job you did." A look to Faate who obvioulsy wasn't enjoying this...he didn't evne know why she had come. "Why don't we head home?" Poor Zahara needed some help it seemed. "Come on you two." Thusly heading off with them.

And whack....that would be the ground as he tripped and fell hard against it, laying there stunned a moment before a soft nose nuzzled at her hair and nipped at her clothing along with accomanying noises of question obviously. Ow, that hurt. Distraction still made her trip and loose her footing even after all this time. Surface elves would always just trip in the underdark."Hm? Oh he's not happy still. It's downright unbearable some days." Using the horse to pull herself up before mounting up and giving him a little kick. "Come on, let's go check on the boys." Riding off to where she knew the two teenage boys were goofing around...sure it was good to keep an eye on them but couldn't keep them locked up all day. A little frown though as her nose twitched. "You smell that?" A nicker back and a little tug on the horse's mane to change his course. "Smells like...pine?" That didn't happen down here...they didn't grow down here. Yup that was....definiately...pine....Piper's expression went mellow....before a snort and she shook her head, blinking a few times. Wait...it just smelled like pine a moment ago...Okay maybe we were crazy. "Come on Serino." Another kick to move on, coming across the boys. "Boys! You're too far out now. You know right now isn't the best time to be wandering off by yourselves." Teenagers.

Zykariel released his best friend from the headlock he'd managed to get him into and glanced up. "Dammit. We're being called yet again..." A shake of his head and he stood up and dusted off his pants then held out a hand to his friend. "So, how's things with your girlfriend, Khai?"

Lyssie was so excited to get the fish but she was none too pleased when it was time to go home. "But Daddy, I only got one! Faate didn't catch any and I only got one. Can't we stay just a little bit longer? Puh-lease?" Faate was all too happy to get off the ground and hand her pole over to her father. "Stop being such a baby, Lys." Retort time. "I'm not a baby! Daddy! Faate called me a baby!" The older girl rolled her eyes. "Case in point" she muttered under her breath. Lyssie stomped her foot. "I'm not a case point! You are!"

Zahara was seriously about to lose it. She'd pulled out the wine and was slumped against a cabinet in the kitchen, staring at the tear-stained face of her son. She'd thought after a little while he might just cry himself into reverie but that wasn't happening. She'd just held him for the last twenty minutes and not once had he stopped his crying, but had only gotten slightly louder. Setting the bottle down, she picked him back up and carried him over to the sink setting him down on the counter and gently washing his face. He was such a mess. "Shh, baby. Please..."

Piper wasn't the only one watching the boys. draconic eyes monitored their every move. While Tier'dal made up all of malik's mage and most of his military forces, the Droag had become the families personal guard, the Ogres his law enforcers and Breakers. but this droag was not intervening because it's duty was to protect, not to monitor distance. but it heard Piper, and a twitch of it's wings as it stayed hidden from sight.

Malik got himself a glass of wine, before marching down to Broog, who was somewhat less than eager to see him.

"I'm not angry with you, Broog. what happened was beyond your control. however I am here to see our progress, how do you think it's coming?"

Broog relaxed and rummaged through his things a moment.

"Mes not been able to doos much wit da thingies. making dem purty make da thingies hard to works wif."

"pretty isn't a primary concern. though it is a nice gesture, I simply want them ready in a few days, can you do that for me with what you have? or should I get more made?"

Broog nodded.

"Broog can do dat wif what hes gots. but if dey not purty, den broog no think dat dey will wears dem like yous wants."

"They'll make do. they know that not everything can be pretty all the time. not to mention Malikhai and his roughhousing makes pretty things hard to keep pretty."

Malik went back upstairs, giving the commands to get food ready, having the records for piper's work and his brought to him to compare with notes on recent attempts or success on horses being stolen to see if there were any particulars about what breeds or bloodlines they were after and what those might mean.

Galesen sighed a little when he released his last arrow, his shot was good but it wasn't perfect. Piper could probably get bullseye from where he was standing with no problem. So after putting everything away he headed on upstairs and then he saw Malik looking over some things. Well he really wanted something to drink so it wouldn't hurt to talk to the man. So after getting a slave to fetch him a drink Galesen wandered over and gave the drow a light nod. "Hey Malik, is there any progress being made?" Hey the elf knew a thing or two about the horse thefts, those idiots weren't silent about it that's for sure.

"Very little."

glancing over at Galesen and taking a seat with a glass of something probably stronger than wine to make sure he didn't throw the books through the wall.

"the bloodlines that seemingly are targeted are specifically bred lines. some are bred more to be hardy warhorse type mounts. the kind we've been selling topside to deal with the still unforgiving enviroment. the others are the ones like Zykariel's Destyny. bred for grace and speed."

taking a drink.

"This, combined with our earlier finding, says that thier trying to mount some kind of calvary. heavy and light mount, but that kind of thing is all but useless without infantry, magi, or archers to back it up. and that size a force we haven't even seen an inkling off. which leads Sevilin to think that it's a bandit group, trying to improve itself through higher quality weapons and mounts for speed."

closing the books.

"But the other related issue is still as big a mystery as it was. someone was able to manipulate Broog mentally and get this original orders placed. the book keeper's time in the breaker room gleaned nothing more than we already knew. and he'd have talked, he has no tolerance for pain. in fact, we had to replace him. there was very little mentally left. Sevilin has put up new runics, but found nothing."

drumming his fingers in agitation.

"Malvolence has been unable to find anything, and my own magi have had no such luck. My guess is either it's someone working through an extensive network, or someone who isn't on this plane, using some kind of connection to do thier deeds. and I don't like either idea at all. I may have to swallow some pride and deal with Sathir and try to purchase a drolvarg."

He had indeed been spending the last two minutes trying to get his head out of his friend's grasp, without resorting to kicking and what not...which made for a very funny scene. A shake of his head and a light stumble backwards as he was suddenly let go at his mother's voice, grabbing his friend's hand to pull himself up. "At least we're not being called inside, we just have to stay a little closer." A roll of his eyes. "She's not my girlfriend and I haven't see her since tournament."

"Faate doesn't even like fishing...and one is plenty enough for you. If you catch all the fish today, you're not going to be able to catch anymore later because there will be none left." Logic was grand when it helped the whining of children. "And don't call each other names...Faate you've just been in a bad mood today. Don't take it out on your sister." Leading the girls home and inside, "Go wash up." Thusly taking a moment to wash his own hands before heading into his wife and son. Walking up behind Zahara he dropped his hands to her shoulders and pressed a kiss to her cheek before reaching over and brushing a hand through his son's hair. "And what's wrong with you today?"

Satisfied as the boys moved back in closer, she gave another little kick to Serino in that direction she had started in earlier...but she just couldn't get that smell again. And she knew she had run across it...that wasn't a usual underdark smell. Not something you just imagine up. A sigh and she shook her head, heading back to the fortress...Dhairiss was starting to feel fussy and Keely could probably use a break.

Quietly he listened, seemed like Malik had a lot of pressure on his mind. Some times it was situation like these he felt sorry for the guy, the man must have enough pressure trying to rule over his large kingdom and now he has to deal with this threat that he cannot identify. So when the blue drow finish the elf looked down at his cup, it was almost empty, so he asked for it to be refilled then turned to Malik. "Whoever is doing this knows way more than what is being let on, though you probably already thought of that. These bandits though seem to be thinking smarter than any kind of bandits that I know of, maybe they are doing this to divide your attention, trying to keep you distracted while something else is in play. If that's so then what could it be? And who really?"

A small pause as he grabbed his drink and took a sip before sighing lightly. "Still this person must be pretty good at concealing themselves and have strong ways in magic if the runes and Malvolence cannot find them. Though could it be possible that somehow they know about the ways of Sevilin's magic and your sword? I mean I don't know if it's true but still to be able to manipulate Broog and still stay out of sight..." Galesen paused for a moment before he shook his head. "They must know what they are doing, they could of planned this for years. Going over every angle and studying the possibilities. Though the big question is why." Another pause and he finished off the rest of his drink before looking at Malik. "Think this may lead to something worse?"

"Malvolence's secrets are known only to members of my house, and not even all of them. it's very unlikely that someone found it's secrets out. finding a way around the runes would mean they'd have to either be from, or have spent some considerable time on Andal. though that does help with the extra planar theory. I know the Obsidian queen is certainly not happy with me. but Sevilin is a Master. and I don't think that any Obsidian runemage is up to his talents, and thier queen fears that power more than she would crave it's use."

A slight nod.

"They are working far more cohesively than normal bandit groups."

leaning back.

"Yes it is. I have no doubt someone is playing puppeteer for a much bigger reason than annoyance or amusement. But I can't dwell on this all the time. I'm arranging for Malikhai to be able to attend the public schooling for certain subjects that we're not overly equipped for here, especially considering the recent issues. I haven't heard from that boy at tournament, and we haven't heard about anything about kaelin either. I'm a bit concerned that perhaps her parents have had some kind of issue with her being around my boy. I may have to talk to Zykariel and see if Kaelin has shown anything of the like. if I'm to blame for her absence, I'd at lest like to know since they seemed to be getting along well."
