Finley wasn't surprised. The council being terrible? Yeah, that was expected. Hexing? Sure, why not. They were capable of that. Maybe she would have been more shocked a few months ago, but really their attitude nowadays has been 'shitty things happen', and the council being horrible was just an expected shitty thing.

What WASN'T an expected shitty thing was an explosion. She was a lot more shocked from that. She was blown backwards, crutches blown in different directions. She landed squarely on her behind, which hurt, but decided that the best thing to think about was protecting her face. She wrapped her arms around her head as bits of wood flew in her direction. She thought about calling out, but it seemed there was a lot of that going down. Voices ringing out from here and there, including Elvira. Finley came to the conclusion there were many other people that needed help. It'd be easier to help them anyway, she didn't need to waste anyone's time by making them drag her a** along. She tucked her one let up for extra protection. She'd be fine. Well, not much worse at least.

Being connected to the Oak's power was not always a good thing. Headmaster Soulstone collapsed.

Dimly, the Headmaster registered a great many people yelling - his students, his staff - but he couldn't do anything. His chest hurt, it hurt so much, and he couldn't get up. It was like all the strength had simply left his body. Soulstone blindly put out mental feelers, trying to sense what had happened to the old man. He couldn't be dead. He couldn't. A mere explosion couldn't destroy Merlin.

      ...

      ......

There was no response. Perhaps it was because the Headmaster was in too much emotional distress, or perhaps it was because he wasn't in the Room, or perhaps it was any other number of reasons. The Headmaster wasn't sure, but he did know he needed to try to control this chaos as soon as possible. And he couldn't do that if he didn't get up.

With Alexander and Galan's assistance, the Headmaster got back to his feet. "Alexander, get the nurse. Galan, start organizing the injured," he ordered. The two professors nodded and went immediately. Soulstone himself, supporting himself with his wand, began making his way to the Oak itself, passing through the crowd of students. Picking his way around debris, the headmaster made it to the splintered trunk and laid a hand on the rough bark. "Old friend," he murmured, "please be alright."

He did not receive an answer.

Ian was damn lucky he'd had Socket facing the wrong way.

The fourth year didn't want to miss any of the assembly, but at one point he had to have his back to the stage as he made his way back down to the rest of the students. Fortunately, he could just point Socket's camera towards the stage so he could keep watching.

So when the Oak exploded, Ian's reaction was remarkably fast. He snatched Socket out of the air and ducked, avoiding the worst of it and taking the lesser debris instead. This much was fine - Ian could take superficial pain like this without issue - but what the ******** was going on? Trees didn't just explode out of nowhere. At least, Merlin's Oak didn't. "Socket," Ian rasped, coughing dust and dirt. "Ekats." The words weren't necessary, but the thoughts behind it were. Socket took off in the crowd to go seek out the other Ekaterinas. Ian's housemates were his first priority. Ian's friends, second. Ian himself, third.

Speaking of friends, Ian staggered over to the other three. The situation was horribly dire, and he could only half-focus as he tracked Socket's progress in one eye. Surely whatever he said couldn't make the situation much worse.

                                "This assembly's a blast, huh?"

They didn't wait for an answer and lifted him up, pausing when they felt something just past his shoulder.. She shifted Rowan to the side and picked up whatever she'd touched, and was surprised to find it was a scrap of metal.

It was warm to the touch. Potato guessed it was a part of whatever the explosion had come from. They turned it over in their hand, squinting at it in the light. Brass, they decided, and kept it in their hand. She lifted Rowan again and walked back to where she'd started.

"Got 'im," Potato said, announcing their return. They set Rowan on the ground his head on their lap in case he was still lightheaded. "How's Kes? Looks like 'e's out cold."

They tossed the scrap metal onto the ground in front of them. "Th't w's obviously s'm kinda bomb. 's made'a brass. ******** hell, who's stupid 'nough t'blow Merlin's tree t'smithereens?"

Din could see NOTHING. This was the problem of being the shortest student in school. Well, it didn't matter too much to em. The council wasn't much to look at. Ey understood that what they were talking about was really bad but ey couldn't see it all effecting em, or most of eir house for that matter.

Then off goes the bomb. Quick thinking made Din make emself smaller than they already were to reduce the amount of debris would hit em. They had no plans other than that, at least not until ey heard eir name shouted over all the noise. Violet. Eir student. Ducked down, Din made eir way towards the call.

"Violet!" Din called back as ey walked through flying tree bits. Ey finally came into view of the girl. "Violet, get smaller." Din went towards her and around her so ey could shield her from the debris, which was kind of hard seeing as Din was such a small person.

xDin's calm voice cut through the chaos, and Violet's knees unlocked. Get smaller? The only thing Violet could think that meant was to duck, so she curled into a ball and hugged her knees. The branch skimmed overhead, taking her bow along with it, but otherwise Violet was unhurt.

When she looked up, Violet saw Din standing in front of her, taking the debris. How horrible! "Mx. Din, be careful!" she squeaked, wrapping her arms around eir waist (while profusely apologizing) and ducking into the crowd to avoid more debris. "You might get hurt!" She didn't want to see anyone getting hurt for her sake - especially not someone she held in such high regard as Mx. Din.

Regardless, Violet clung to Din and struggled to hold off a panic attack. "What - what just happened?" she whimpered. "W-why did the Oak e-explode? None of this m-makes any sense."

carus let the improb fall away, exhaling heavily. Did improbabilities always take so much out of him? He should have spent more time paying attention in meditation class. It was really biting him in the a** now.

"Fine," Icarus replied, quickly taking hold of himself. At the rate his magic capacity was depleting, he was going to have to be more careful about spacing out his spells. Relying on the others...didn't exactly sound bad, but the idea did make him nervous. Icarus had always been a self sufficient type.

"If you were going to make a joke," He began, righting himself as Ian approached. "You could have at least tried to be clever about it."

Icarus took a moment to survey his surroundings, taking account of the tomas students he could. "We should try to help." He suggested. It was easy to get confused in all the chaos, and from the looks of it, a lot of the other students were panicking. The underclassmen wouldn't know "Gil, I'm guessing your magic capacity is mostly fine in comparison to ours. Maybe focus on protecting people from debris." Icarus paused for a moment, wondering just exactly what the teachers were up to at the moment. Shouldn't they be taking control of the situation? It was seriously a miracle that the school hadn't gotten shut down yet.

He cleared his thoughts, glancing between his friends again, keeping an arm over his head as protection. "Any other ideas? Where's a good place for shelter?"

Amanda's sudden spike in responsiveness was at least a better sign. Bambi shot her friend a little tight smile, beginning to feel an odd exhaustion seep into her bones. Bambi remembered coming to Merlin and feeling oddly energetic; what was going on now? Did it have to do with the tree?

"Let's, uh," She mumbled, heading for the doors that lead into the hall. "Let's hope the tree doesn't smash any roofs in."

With that incredibly optimistic statement, Bambi pushed open the doors with a shove of her shoulder and head into the Great Hall.

OOC: loud screaming

Of course this announcement was just a more elaborate way of saying 'we the council are complete and utter dicks'. Though, to be fair that's what Gil heard whenever the CEE members opened their mouths. He made a mental note to himself to finally send that letter off back home getting Aron to get some lawyers onto the council's case. Gil really doubted that the council would care about the word of anyone but someone as slimy as they were so a lawyer would be perfect.

He was glad to be around Yvonne and, after a bit, Icarus. They were sort of a calming presence. Sort of. If they weren't there and the council was parading around Ian like some prized show pony, Gil might have just blown up. Ba dum ching. Boy, he was glad to have Icarus and his quick thinking around even more after the tree exploded. Sure, it wasn't enough. He still got a cut across the face with a fast flying stick. But it could have been worse if not for Icarus throwing up an Improb.

Gil touched his cut as Yvonne asked how he was fairing. He breathed through his teeth at the sting. "We've been through a ******** ton worse than this," he gave as his reply. He pulled out his wand as icarus asked him if his magic capacity would be fine. It almost skipped his mind that humans had shitty capacities. He glanced around throught the Improb, Bumping bits of tree off their course towards students. "We're probably safest in a building," he mentioned. "Well, honestly the safest place would probably be a few ******** countries away from this mess but buildings would be quicker."

Okay, seriously, Shanta was completely over these freak accidents.

The fourth year didn't answer Muna at first, focusing instead on an Improb around Shashi to keep them safe. It looked like going up this high saved them from most of the major debris, and Muna's reflexes saved them from that one massive-a** branch. The magic took more out of Shanta than usual, but she didn't have time to think about the implications of that now.

Something sure was up, though. Shanta was willing to bet cash this had to do with the damn Pact unit, and Leah. Trees didn't just explode. The elf slipped her goggles down over her eyes and squinted at the tree. Something stood out - something that wasn't wood. It was shiny and twisted, almost like... metal? Worth investigating later.

Muna's voice startled her, and Shanta snapped to attention. What now? Shanta looked down at the crowd of panicked students, of the scattered professors trying to get organized. She spotted a glimmer of another Improb and a splash of pink hair - Icarus. The older students were the only ones that knew defensive spells. The younger years...

"We make sure the kids are okay," she finally said, touching Shashi's tassel. The carpet began to descend. "And then we find Leah and sock her in the ******** jaw."

Nah, just adrenaline wearing off. Probably. Yeah. They didn't really want to consider the other possibility.

Amanda closed her eyes and drifted off.

      Do not underestimate me.

The Headmaster jerked. The voice was faint, but there.

      Tend to your students.

The Headmaster closed his eyes and took a deep breath. His students. He had to make sure they were alright. Louis Soulstone could not lose face because of something like this. And certainly, he thought with not a little contempt, not in front of the Council.

Soulstone turned away from the tree and lit a bright lumos at the tip of his wand to garner student, Council and staff attention. "House reps!" he shouted. "Lead your house to the main building. Professors, assist the wounded and injured. Caedah, do a headcount once inside. Distinguished members of the Council," he said, rather sharply, "please assist me in creating a sphere of influence around the Oak. We cannot predict that this will not happen a second time."

The Headmaster was feeling particularly drained, truth be told. He did not like it, and he especially disliked turning to the Council for help. But in such a chaotic situation, he did not care where his help came from.

                    xBen, as always, was unruffled.

The moment the air pressure had shifted, he'd stepped into Slater's line of fire and created a Turtle, effectively shielding them both. By the time the Turtle fell, he had put up an Improb to shield from anything further. Debris clattered off the shield, and Ben watched it all with the same cool expression he always wore.

So this was the work of the Pact, hm? Ben could only assume it was an explosive device of some sort. Quite a bold move, blowing up the Oak. Incapacitate your enemy while handicapping yourself. He who controls the Oak controls the game. But what happens when the Oak is destroyed? For hardly a second, the corners of Lockwood's mouth twitched upwards. It appears the rules have been changed.

The Headmaster's irritating, bossy voice wormed its way through the chaos. Lockwood spared him a glance. The look in his eyes was panicked, but at least he appeared focused. As much as Ben would rather not assist, it was likely the best course of action for now. He was right - they had no way of knowing if there was a second bomb, and for now it would be best to contain it.

"Slater. Asphodel. Eleanor." Ben tilted his head in the direction of the Headmaster. The order was clear enough: go with it for now. It would likely reflect worse on them if they didn't help, anyway, so Ben raised his wand and began the spell.

OOC: dw endo should be fine in a bit

The ringing continued and End still couldn't hear anything else. He'd wished he'd been quick enough to protect his ears. Especially after seeing Muna's lips move. He really hated the fact that Muna had to waste his voice when he couldn't hear him and hated even more that he had missed an opportunity to hear Muna's voice. He also missed Shanta's reply.

With Muna's extra support, he managed to raise a hand. Still only one. He couldn't bring himself to let go with the other, especially as Shashi suddenly changed course. 'I'm sorry...' he Marked with his index finger. 'My ears aren't working....' He left the Marks hanging in front of him. He didn't expect Shanta or Muna to be paying attention to him in a moment like this, but he had to make sure they had a way of knowing what was happening with him.

Alright, so maybe the joke was in poor taste. It was a high stress situation. He'd come up with a better joke later.

Ian swayed a little, just for a second, as a strange fatigue washed over him. (Similarly, somewhere else, Socket dipped.) It wasn't that bad, but it caught him by surprise, and he grabbed onto Yvonne's arm for support. "Whoa," he muttered. "Feels like a crash after a sugar high." Ian shook his head; he was a fourth year. It wasn't good to show this sort of weakness in front of younger years, especially after the nightmare that had been two years ago. If they could survive the damn dorms setting on fire because a dragon climbed out of the ground like an a*****e, they could survive a tree blowing up.

Ian's attention was drawn to the Headmaster shouting, up by the Oak. When did he get up there? It didn't matter. All that did matter was what he was saying. Heading to shelter sounded like a good thing, and something along the lines of what Icarus and Gil were planning anyway. Ian nodded in response to both his friends and Soulstone. "Sounds like we've all got the same idea in mind," he said, jerking a thumb towards the Headmaster. "We've got every house but Janus, right? Housemates first, ourselves second."

Absently, he sent a signal to Socket far away. The robot jerked upright and spit out: Eᴋᴀᴛᴇʀɪɴᴀs, ᴘʟᴇᴀsᴇ ᴄᴏɴɢʀᴇɢᴀᴛᴇ ʜᴇʀᴇ before Marking an orange dragon in the air. The feat took a little more effort than usual - and usually it took no effort at all. What was going on?
