Basis #1 - The Divine
Magic is a property of the divine or blessed. Magic is handed down from the user's deity or from some form of divine power or Mana energy. Magic is raw power, formed by a user's will. However, not all the time will a person's deity hear them, or will Mana be in abundance. Remember, magic is only as strong as the user is mentally and spiritually, cause there is always someone or something that can end your Magic career.
Basis #2 - What is Magic and What is not
Magic is a broad term which can be interperted by many people differently. The obvious magic things are summoning a monster, throwing a fireball, healing. These are magic abilities. However, items such as Telekinesis, making things float through the air, and Psionics are not magic, but rather a person able to manipulate their surroundings with the use of their mind. This is a whole new cake, and is not covered yet.
Weapons that are altered to do something besides what they are intended (A sword is intended to cut, a gun to shoot, a bow to fire) is considered magical. If a sword hurts only evil things, it is magical. If a spear shocks the person being stabbed, it is magical.
Basis #3 - Handling Magic in a fight, Casting Times
When using magic in a fight, there are many factors that can affect, distort, and stop a casting. Many people forget that being shot with an arrow while casting a huge spell usually makes you lose concentration, or being knocked to your feet. When casting a spell with a casting time, one must be focused on the spell, concentrating all of their energy into the makings of what they are going to cast. This is basic knowledge, and is usually forgotten in fights where more than just a girl is on the line.
Most spells contain a casting time, a certain a length of time the caster must concentrate before the spell goes off. This should be applied to most spells, such as making a giant fireball, or teleportation. Most battle spells also should have a casting time, which of course, make fighting with magic rather hard. Remember this, in most articles, games, books, and other things, mages did not fight alone, they had someone to distract the enemy while they casted. This is a good reason why a mage should not do one on one fights, unless they are good with weapons....
Basis #4 - Elements
Every spell has an element. The most common ones are Fire, Water, Electric, Earth, Air, and Ice. However, sopme other elements are Holy, Evil, Dark, Conjuration, Illusion, etc. Every spell has a base to it, no matter what.
