Balancing a scythe wouldn't be hard. Take the blade and a straight haft. Mount the blade parallel to the haft, rather than perpendicularly. Done.

It's pretty similar to a voulge, as far as polearms go. With absolutely zero historical sources to back up the claim, I'd say that there's a possibility that the voulge and maybe even other big-blade polearms came from the notion of turning a scythe into a weapon of war.

A scythe's blade curves in two directions, which is what gives it it's unparalleled ease of use in slicing through great swathes of whatever. Moving the blade away from the perpendicular defeats the purpose of the tool, which is to slice with minimal effort. The curved handle, with its perpendicular grips, also aids this, since the arms have to do very little. The tool is used by twisting the torso, keeping the hands steady to guide the blade.

In battle, the primary use of it resembles a halberd only insofar as it is very good at tripping and attacking the legs. It's primary advantage is that the attack vector is so low to the ground that most melee weapons have a very difficult time countering it unless they step into it's cutting arc. Furthermore, it is held deceptively close to the body, so an overconfident opponent can easily find himself trapped between the scything blade, or getting checked in the throat or face with the haft.

The drawback is obviously that once committed to a particular attack, it leaves the body open, and the weapon's business end has to be brought all the way back to the start position before it is truly dangerous again.

It defeats the purpose as a farming tool, but that's irrelevant because the entire purpose of mounting the head in a different fashion was to turn a farming implement into an actual tool of war, rather than an improvised weapon. As a weapon, mounting it parallel to the haft improves its functionality. That's why people did it. It becomes a pretty good chopping weapon - like the voulge, lochaber axe, or bardiche - but retains enough of a tip that it can be used for tripping, pulling horsemen off of their mounts, or just jamming the end of your weapon into somebody's chest. While most of these things are possible to some degree with a standard scythe, they are considerably harder from an ergonomic standpoint and you have less reach whilst doing them because the shape of the haft, as you said, is designed to allow a man to easily cut big swathes of wheat in front of him.

I mean, there's nothing stopping someone from using a standard scythe as a weapon, but it's not balanced for fighting, it's balanced for cutting wheat. That's why peasants would pop the head off and re-mount it parallel to the haft, because you basically turned a farming implement into a giant killing weapon capable of lopping off limbs or ripping a knight or dragoon right out of his stirrups.

Scythes are terrible weapons. They still look really cool though.

Hand held sickles on the other hand can do work pretty much anywhere. I'd be way more scared of someone swinging a sickle around then some guy trying to awkwardly chop me with a scythe.

That's because you can dual-wield sickles.

And we all know dual-wielded weapons are way more dangerous.

The sickle's inverted form, the khopesh, is far scarier imo.

The speed of a sword, the chopping power of an axe.

Anyone enjoy my fight? =D

I had a character who used a kopesh once. Was a sort of solar-powered Son of Ra superhero.

I should remake him into something more toned down. He was kind of like Cyclops, except not a crybaby b***h shouting "JEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAN" every issue.

There might be some incoming butt hurt from my fight if my opponent doesn't agree to what I've done. Fair warning.
