OOC: Skip to...some time?
"I am grateful for it," Marcus answered, getting up and running a hand through his hair. "Although I have no doubt that the elders have seen us."

Terryn nodded in agreement. "Perhaps your grandmother is still so irate over what I said last night that she hoped we would freeze to death."

OOC: Mm...when they tell Serina?
Marcus shook his head. "Doubtful. There's the matter of my estates to think about. And even if she managed to kill only you off, Then she would have to get me another suitable girl, and look how long it's taken me to find this one."

((hmmm no, since ive got a plan for that))
The earl's carriage rolled up to the duchess's estate, an hour earlier than he had said he would arrive. He exited grimly, walking up to the front door and knocking on it weakly.

OOC: You never tell me these things. So what happens now?
The Duchess, who was reading intently, rose after looking at the clock in surprise. Something was amiss. Arvin was hardly ever early.

((now you wait and watch the drama unfold))
The earl entered, dragging his feet into the drawing room and siting silently in the armchair opposite of the duchess. His head was down and he looked hunched over and small.

The Duchess frowned. A servant came in to answer the door, and the Duchess instructed him to fetch tea for the both of them. "Arvin?" she asked tentatively. "What's wrong?"

The earl shook his head, sighing. "I...Emily..." He couldn't bring himself to speak and instead just sat there.

OOC: Is Serina pregnant?
The Duchess shifted in her seat. "Yes?" she asked, leaning forward in a most concerned manner. Really, she had no idea what had come over him.

((like that old geezer could impregnate anyone...))
The earl glanced up, his eyes obviously filled with tears. "I did not believe her. I thought she was feigning illness."

OOC: It wouldn't necessarily have to be him--there's ways to get around the whole vow business.
The Duchess swallowed, and she took her friend's hand sympathetically. "Oh, Arvin. I am so sorry. Is she...?"

The earl shook his head. "She just fainted when she arrived at the springs last night. Nobody knows what is to happen to her. They say she is just laying there, in and out of consciousness. This is all my fault." He buried his head in his hands, feeling completely awful.

The Duchess patted her friend consolingly, and thanked the servant when he came in with tea. "It will help you think straight," she told the earl, gesturing to the tray. "Perhaps you could go bring her back to the manor, hm?"

The earl shook his head, a trembling hand reaching out for his teacup. "The physicians deemed it unsafe for her to travel in her condition. She needs to be disturbed as little as possible or she may go into shock."

The Duchess frowned deeply. "Then it seems that the best thing for you to do is to go and be with her," she advised. Serina had never seemed particularly healthy, but she certainly wasn't sickly, either. Or so she had thought.
