*Luke clinks the beer very lightly, as so not cause a beer volcano.* Thanks.
*Luke takes a sip, frowns, and after a long second, he looks to Bard.* We have to get Cora out of here. Not just for a day or two days. But for good. This place... *Luke shakes his head and focuses on his point.* She can't stay here.

*Bard takes a small sip to finish the toast and then sets the bottle aside. He's quiet for a few moments, and then he says*
I once asked Tavin about bringing Maggie to my time. He told me flat out it wasn't a possibility. I didn't want to believe that, and I still don't. But maybe it's true. Even if it could be done, she wouldn't last 72 hours. "Rest in Peace, Margaret Dowling. Killed by an overzealous boyfriend and the common cold."
*he hesitates a moment and then fishes a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket along with a cheap, translucent green light. He lights up and takes a drag*
But somehow... somehow Cora got here. And she stayed here. And... if that can be true.... I don't see why the opposite couldn't also be true. I don't know how, but... there's got to be a way.

*Luke leans forward and nods emphatically, as if to say "right?"* Exactly. If she can stay here and not go back to wherever it is she came from - then there's a way for her to go some place else and stay there.
*Luke hadn't been planning on saying this but...* And let me tell you I've got a whole time period of people who'd be thrilled to have her there. Even her boyfriend's there. And Alex works with the government, and ... trust me, between the two of us it wouldn't take anything to get her set up there.
*adds* And ********, if this place can manage to do that, there's no reason we can't make it happen again.

*Bard considers for a moment* In fact, I think we've already proven it's possible....

*Luke eyes Bard.* Exactly. If she can stay here, then she can stay in someone else's time.
*grabs his beer, then adds* Or were you talking about somethin' else?

*he laughs* Not me. This place is a little too much like home to me.
*he glances around, realizing he means that. It feels like he's been coming here his whole life.*
All this time to myself, all those books... if I wanted some fresh air, all I'd have to do is come home with you or Maggie or... practically anyone really.
Sounds weird, I know. But it's not like I get out of my house much anyway. Mo practically had to drag me to her Christmas party this year. That's where I came from. Don't I look festive?

*As he talks, Luke can't help thinking: This place was like home to Cora, too. He doesn't voice it though.*
*Instead, he smiles, raises his eyebrows, and points to Bard with his beer.* Yeah, you do. All that's missing is your Santa Hat. *smirks at the thought of Mo dragging him out* Mo - that's your editor, right? The one who likes to beat up frat boys? How's that party goin?

I wouldn't know. *he says with a wry grin* I've been hiding with a book in the coat room for the last hour.
*Bard finishes his cigarette, sweeps the ashes off the table into his hand and disposes of them*
In my defense, though, I've been worried about Cora all week. I didn't really feel like socializing much with Mo's friends and clients. She is a persistent lady, though.

Oh, no. Never underestimate the ability of middle-aged authors and agents to party hard. If I have to sit through one more drunken rendition of "I Touch Myself"...

*he smirks* And miss Maureen's New Year's Eve bash? It may be the only place on the planet I can go to escape that stupid song.

*laughs* There's no escape from that. I meant the Prince song. You know the one.
*he does a little dance in his chair* "Tonight we're going to party..."

*nods, as he knows exactly the song he means and even sings part of it* Like it's nineteen-ninety...
*1999.*
*Luke's eyes go wide. He stares down and his mouth parts open. He looks up to Bard and looks at his clothes - the clothes he wore to his Christmas party. Luke feels his throat turning dry and he asks with urgency.* Bard... what year are you in?
