Owlheart watched horrified as it became clear the seed was not of Vikeli.... "what have we done?" she whispered to herself, almost silently.... but they had the key to rescue the other nouls captured by the .. bone crushers? the rat called them. seemed like a reasonable name for the creatures after she'd found that bone snapped clean in half. She shuddered, almost dislodging the two faery that had been perched on her.

Her ears flicked round to Nereida's words, as did Dragon's and Night's, "Right" the two faery said in unison, flying up and ahead of Nereida as she turned and sped off, leaving Owlheart to scramble behind, she might have been able to catch that other rat but Nereida had purpose behind her hooves now and was pretty darn fast. "C'mon" she called to the other doe, she couldn't remember her name offhand, rusty,...something? "She's going to leave us behind by accident if we don't hurry" she cried as she ran past Russet Fawn.

To the Waterfall!!!!

___________________

Fawn watched as the Rat seemed very pleased, if not sickening eager for the plant to grow more and spread. What had she just brought back to life? Was she dooming her home to something that would harm Vykeli and everyone around them? Frowning she looked at the hole the rat had vanished into after after forking over the gear. He had mentioned something about a waterfall and a set of doors. Seems this rat had been around for a while, enough so that he could find something that could potentially harm the planet more.

""Talltale, I don't think we did a good thing here." She muttered looking at the Jack Hop whom seemed to want to pluck whatever was sprouted and destroy it somehow.

"I don't think so either, but the others are leaving, we should too.." He said leaping back to his perch. "I can only hope that seed withers..."

That was a thought, but she doubted it after her magic was used upon it. Shaking her head, Fawn turned around and headed after Nereida and Owlheart. Talltale looked back towards the spot where they had been before it vanished from sight. He hated the idea of something strange in the forest, the greedy look on the rat's face. It made him... He wasn't sure, he'd never thought of wanting to destroy something more then that sprout...

Indira felt an uncommon sense of pride well up within her, as the other does ducked under the waterfall, following the monster and did their best. This was no jaunt through a meadow, no game, this was dangerous. And each was actively risking their life. She honestly hadn't expected it. Perhaps from Cinder, who'd previously proven her mettle, but these others? Clearly Grandfather Tree had a bough in all of this. And each of these does, despite the danger, despite their fear, had acted for the best of Vykeli. Perhaps Homewood wasn't as morally lost as she'd feared.

The screeching of the metal grinding against the stone was enough to refocus Indira. Later was the time to reflect. Now was the time for action. Every second that passed was another where an important life could be lost. The door stopped. The gap was so narrow. And then the voice. Morsels. All Indira wanted was to prevent anyone else from becoming a morsel. Rage flared within in, and she wanted to jam her horn into the beast's throat, to end its talking. But there were more important things. She drew in a breath, trying to focus herself.

The petite pink noul who'd acted so effectively turned to her. The fear in her eyes was real. Indira quickly touched her with her nose. The gesture surprised even her. She's done her duty. She kept her voice as quiet as she could. "Just find the gear." As she moved to dart into the gap, something shoved past her.

The small doe from outside. Indira goggled. The narrow confines and the beast prevent her further motion. Her mouth opened and closed. She was so close to her goal. The pleading she'd heard through the door seemed to echo through her mind. Right at the door, had the monsters inside heard the other doe? Was their chance at surprise now a bust?

Her eyes locked on the injured beast, and she did all she could think to do. "Oh please, Beast! Don't eat me! But I just can't fit through that gap. You'll have to make it bigger!"

Cinder turned to look at Specterdust, who had appeared and joined them at the door. "Yea, I don't think-"

She had meant to say that she didn't think anyone going on alone was a good idea, unless that noul was perfectly prepared to become a sacrifice to these toothy monsters. But before she could finish her sentence, she caught sight of Indira out of the corner of her eye.

Oh, no, she's done it again. She's gone through, hasn't she? She's decided once and for all that it's time to be eaten, Cinder thought.

She turned away from Specterdust. If Indira had gone in, then making sure she wasn't in there by herself was more important. But then... she felt almost pleasantly surprised to see Indira there, still standing right in the doorway instead of going in. Maybe she'd realized that having a death wish wasn't healthy. Cinder kind of doubted it though.

Still maybe that had bought them a couple of moments. Maybe enough to get that gear? Cinder craned her neck.

"That chestnut buck who ran off, has he made it back yet?" she asked, hoping someone might catch sight of him.

"Wait," Cattleya blurted out, eyes wide as she stared at the little crack in the door. She didn't want anyone going in there alone. Louder, for the benefit of the beasts, she said, "You can't make us!"

She positioned herself carefully, though, in case the beasts could see better than she could.

The Waterfall
Havoc arrives on the scene with the rusted gear in tow, shortly followed by Russet Fawn, Nereida, and Owlheart. As they enter the lake, they spot several noulicorn rears sticking out of the waterfall, making it clear where most of the commotion is.

Meanwhile, beneath the waterfall, the gathering of noulicorns remained poised at the open door. The few who can see within it are greeted with darkness and the damp smell of water and moss. Light flashes in circular gleams as the beasts stir in the shadows. If one listens closely, the tap of hooves of stone is just barely audible.

“We have your friends, tasty creatures,” comes a voice, dark and sibilant. “The door is open.”

The beasts either don’t wish to open the door any further or they aren’t able to.

Quote:
You may choose to enter one by one!
In doing so, the post order will matter in regards to the consequences of this action.

If you choose to use any of your magics when entering the door, please roll 2d6 + WIT.

OR

You can attempt to entice a beast out!
By rolling 2d6 + CHARM.

OR

One of the gears may be placed in the door mechanism!

Both fit, but they might have different effects…

attempt to lure a beast out
___________________

The sound of hooves came, and a large number of nouls arrived, including the buck who'd run off to go get..something which Cat hoped was the missing gear. She glanced over to them and made her decision without waiting for anyone else's input. She definitely didn't want anyone going inside, after all, so it was better to bluff, right? With any luck the beasts had heard those hooves, and they had some kind of loyalty to each other..

She moved in front of the door and dug her heels in. "You'll need to try harder than that to push me in," she called, though anyone with a clear view could see that no one was attempting to do anything of the sort.

"Well, wait, we don't know that they actually have our friends," Cinder said, in particular eyeing Indira, who was apt to just charge in there without a second thought. "How about you give us some sort of reassurance that they're in there?"

As she spoke, she sidled up to Indira and subtly but insistently moved to maneuver the doe up against a wall - anywhere that wasn't right in front of the door, hoping to buy them all some time. For Indira's own good, Cinder was willing to do a full on tackle if she need to. It would probably piss her off, but it was better than letting her run in there blind. Hopefully.

Where was that chestnut buck with the gear???

Rolling for charm

Indira's gentle nose press was reassuring, but not enough to completely calm Sweetpea's fears. The insidious glow of eyes beyond the shadow of the door only cemented her reluctance to enter into the beasts' trap. She could hear the faintest of hooves, but they'd all be trapped if they filed in.

So they'd have to pretend they couldn't hear them at all. "I don't know if they have them at all," she agreed with Cinder. "Seems like these monsters are just starving and weak." Her words were brazen, but her voice fell a little weak. She knew what was at stake, and she was worried they were making all the wrong moves.

The sound of reinforcements appearing behind them was reassuring, but she didn't dare look away from the door for a second to see who had made it. She hoped as hard as she could it was Havoc, though.

The gear is here! And uh, trying to be charming too maybe? RIP

Havoc galloped head on to the waterfall, barely glancing back to see the hoofbeats were more of the initial party fast on his heels. He leaped rocks and rounded the waterfall, slipping on the slick stone there but catching himself. Bedraggled, splattered in dried mud and leafy bits, he skidded up barely stopping himself from crashing into anyone.

"Mhh pph mi!!" He said excitedly, then spit the gear out at Indira's hoves to try again. "I GOT IT!" He announced between panting to gain his breath. Whew! Hero mode was hard work! He glanced around, seeing the others seemed to be trying to talk to the beats through the door crack. Gathering himself up he tried to limp with dignity to stand by the pink doe who seemed to be antagonizing them. She had a good point maybe.

"Yeah uh.., why would we go in there when we are busy out here looking for our friends!" He said lamely to the glowing eyes as if he wasn't scared at all. He was. "You come out here if you want us...?" He did not sound as brave as he wanted. Hero mode was short-lived apparently.

Smooshed against cave wall Indira's charming, ok?
___________________

As she was unceremoniously smooshed against the wall by Cinder she heard hoof beats. Different from the ones beyond the door. From the corner of her eye she caught sight of Havoc skidding onto the scene. At least the buck seemed to value action. Indira was beginning to chafe at this impasse.

As the missing gear plinked against her hoof, she narrowed her eyes. At the moment the mechanism missing the gear was just out of her reach, blocked by a crush of other noulicorns, and of course the monster. Given that she was blocked from both the mechanism and the opening, her only option seemed to be to try to draw the beasts out. Maybe at least it would distract them so they didn't kill any of the captives. Her heart pounded, every muscle in her body telling her they were moments away from even greater tragedy.

"We won't go in there without a fight!" She pitched her voice, attempting to sound paniced. But it sounded flat, even to her ears. Given half the chance, she would go in there. And bring them the fight.

After her ... attempt ... at acting, she bent down and collected the gear in her mouth. No good to lose it now. Maybe she'd be able to get over to the mechanism ... In the back of her mind, Fleet's emotions were just a bundle of fear and alarm. Indira pushed them aside again. She needed to focus, now more than ever.

Using the gear, well, getting a closer look to where they go at least. xD

Russet Fawn and the others arrived at the doors behind the rest, well behind the rest. It seemed that they were trying to lure out something. Tilting her head to one side she glanced at the rest, seems they had been here for a bit and were trying to get through the doors. Doors that were partly open, enough for one to get through to whatever was awaiting on the other side.

"We have another gear, one that some Dire Rats were holding onto." She said glancing towards one whom didn't think they would be useful. "Shall we try your gear before our own? Or do you know if they are both needed to open these doors?"

Stepping forward she tried getting closer to the doors to get a closer look at the workings. While she knew little to nothing of Other's tech, it seemed that perhaps their gear could do something... Just... That rat whom gave it to them and tricked her into reviving a seed from the Others... Sounded like their gear had the possibility to be good or cause more trouble. It was just a matter of trying...

Attempting to be "charming".
Rolled a 6.

It seemed that instead of taking the risk, everyone was going the route of enticing another beast out, while waiting for more gears. That did seem a more sound idea, seeing as it was risky sending one of them in. It took several of them to subdue the one out here. Specterdust was never really one to convince anyone to do anything. She pondered what she could possibly say that would even catch their attention.

The chestnut buck suddenly appeared, sending a gear flying from his mouth at Indira. Specterdust made a face at that. Right then, she thought as she approached the narrow opening. She peered through, it was dark but she had to at least try. She just hoped that eventually she’ll get to beat up another one.

“Show your face so I can rearrange it, you cowards!”

“You’re not that scary,” Kevin suddenly said, standing next to her.

“When did you get here?” Specterdust said looking surprised, “And hey! That wasn’t very nice. I’m scary!”

“Not with that adorable voice….” Kevin said rolling his eyes.

using the gear from Big Rat

___________________

Nereida stretched her gait so far one would have thought she was flying to the mouth of the cascading falls. Her chest heaved heavily as hooves pressed inward to slow her pace. Once she'd stopped she recognized the location instantly as if her dream played back in a loop. Glancing downward at the stream flowing outward she saw the boulders and roots giving her a moment of relief. The next sight was just mind-blowing seeing rumps sticking out of the waterfall of the party she'd started out within this rescue.

Breath still wavering she perked her ears to the sounds of nouls coaxing the creatures out? Interesting. Pushing her way through the party of "charmers she followed Fawn to where the gear would be placed. Reaching into her adventuring satchel she loosened the gear from the Dire Rats. There seemed to be a second gear lying before Indra which made Nereida pause wondering what each would respond to. Surely, one would open the door to those things. Nereida hadn't quite gotten a look at everyone here otherwise she would have seen the "Bone Crusher" as "big Rat" called them beaten and wounded among them.

As she stood in front of the slot where the gear fit, Nereida once again pondered what this gear or key would do. Now that there were two gears it was time to find it out what cause and effect this foreign creation created. Waiting for Owlheart to join them she reached inward grabbing the gear in her teeth. Reaching outward she placed the strange piece of metal in the door turning it slightly so it fits into place.

Hearing the chatter she simply shook her head. She wasn't in the mood to charm whatever it was behind that door. Her day had already been quite draining as so as it was.

The Waterfall

Quote:
The order you guys posted has determined how this is going to play out!
All those partial successes mean you’re going to get what you wanted, but there’s a cost.

Quiet murmurs and rumbling growls snaked from the door gap as several of the party attempted to lure the beasts out. Footsteps echoed closer, the clomping on thick, four-toed hooves approaching the door. A massive jaw appeared, teeth bared, and one of the beasts shoved their way through the gap and sprang toward Lady Cattleya.

A second tries to jam itself through the entrance, claws scrabbling on stone as it forces its bulk out into the open. This one aims itself at Cinder.

Hot on its heels comes a third, slightly smaller than the others but no less fierce, snappings it teeth as it charges for Sweetpea.

It seems your attempt to charm the beasts has succeeded and getting them to come out, but they’re not in the mood to negotiate after all that taunting!

Nereida places the gear in the mechanism and the door begins to creak shut, hopefully locking the rest of the beasts inside.

A spotted face appears in the door crack. A noulicorn! “We’re here! Everyone that survived, we’re all here!”

He throws himself at the door and manages to get most of his body through before the door jams shut on his tail! He yelps and twists around, but he’s stuck fast.

Quote:
It looks like a fight has started!

Battle the Beasties
With 2d6 + BODY or throw some magic at them with 2d6 + WIT!
(magic in battle will always result in at least a partial success)

Talk some Sense into them!
With a roll of 2d6 + CHARM

Help the Noulicorn!
Find a way to reopen the door with the gears via 2d6 + WIT
OR use your strength to force it open with 2d6 + BODY
It will take a full success (10+) in order to free him, but a partial success will let you learn more about the gear and door mechanism.

The individual who successfully frees this noulicorn will win him!
