Elvira was sorely considering ditching the rabble of students and going to the gym. Their departure would be obvious, of course, but Elvira had long since stopped giving a s**t about not grating too hard on the Council's nerves. They could find out everything and Skye could get arrested for all they cared.

Still, ditching for the gym meant leaving Fin behind. And this hexing thing seemed....slightly important. "That's ******** up," They muttered under their breath. Loud enough for anyone around them to hear, but not loud enough to cause a disturbance. Elvira was always a crowd-stirrer. "That's so ******** up."

They let their eyes rake over the crowd. Gwen's frame stood out to them, as did Asha's and Adrienne's. For a moment Elvira thought of joining their friends, of grabbing onto them. No. The rabble of the students was too congested for them to even bother.

Gwen's bothered expression had caught their eye, though. Why was she looking so bothered? Was her ears extra sensitive in crowds? Then, Elvira heard something. Beeping.

Wood. Shrapnel, a sound that had the '********' lying on Elvira's tongue disintegrate, and they covered their face with an arm and used the one with fingers wrapped firmly around the Janus bat to shield Fin's. They felt wood bite into their flesh and snarled. Accustomed to the stinging pain and injuries that came in quick shots, Elvira quickly recovered. A bit of wood was nothing compared to a punch that could break the nose, after all.

Out of the corner of their eye, Gwen was falling. Elvira personally didn't think it was a good time for Gwen to practice her swooning for their expedition to Camelot, but before they could swear loudly (and uselessly) at her falling form, Asha's voice caught their ears. "OVER HERE!" They shouted at the top of their lungs, lifting up their batting hand to give an easily viewed vantage point. Then they paused.

                            [GET GWEN, ASHA.]

Sтσηє Tᴀᴍᴇʀ

roublesome. Having an announcement in front of the oak was just too troublesome. Why couldn't the CEE be reasonable and just do their damn announcements in The Great Hall?

Then again, Icarus thought, staring at Slater's face with cold, analytical intent. He refused to look at Ian, with his dark red eyes and odd expression. Disciplinary student didn't suit him at all. Suspicion layered heavily underneath an impassive expression and a poker face that would be only impenetrable to those who knew him long enough, Icarus slipped through the crowd until he found Gil and Yvonne. Navigating the gaggle of students was easy with his large size and Ashes' signature presence on his shoulder, but also absolutely intolerant. Icarus hated the close contact with people he knew only by faces.

"Look at that idiot up there," He murmured lightly to his friends, shuffled especially close next to Yvonne with his arms crossed. Icarus liked to hold his tongue in serious situations, but there was never a bad time to make fun of Ian. The concern in his voice for his friend was just barely tangible. "I hope he trips." Icarus added in as Ian went down the staircase.

He didn't. Icarus tried to catch his eye and wave him over, and then returned to the announcement. Faintly, he thought he heard something like a phone going off, then--

Icarus was wrapping his arms around Gil and Yvonne's shoulders, automatically shifting his stance so he would remain steady on the earth as the desire to protect shot through his blood. (A habit that most stone wielders eventually developed, he was sure.) Then, head still shaking from sound and chaos, he cast an improb. It wasn't fast enough to block all incoming rubble, not when Icarus realized he had to muster up more from his own personal reserves of magic than he was accustomed to, but it kept them otherwise safe.

His eyes fell on the clouds of brown blooming from where the tree had been standing, the way the branches were ripping apart in an almost gruesome fashion. Icarus hissed underneath his breath, and apprehension tinged with fear was clear on his face. Who on earth--who the ******** was stupid enough to do this?

Icarus thought of Leah, with her pretty smile and elaborate sigils and almost-mocking words. Then he thought of Gisa, warm and too-friendly and held popular by the rest of the workers at the Diner.

Ashes, though the epitome of composure with her head tucked into her chest, was digging her talons into the shoulder pad on Icarus' shoulder.

xxxx Good. Tugging Eleanor to her was a safer choice than relying on an idiot to protect her. Asphodel slipped out of Hau's grip easily, watching as the students erupted into chaos. Then, she looked at her friend; to Asphodel, Eleanor's thoughts were always clear on her face.

Hau cleared his throat. There was wood in his back. It hurt. A lot. He realized absentmindedly that he had done something that could only be considered foolish by Asphodel and Eleanor. Neither of them had a shred of appreciation for stupid over-self sacrificial heroism. "I," He began slowly. "Also intended to put up an improbability. Have no misconception. I'm just not very used to having ancient magical hot-spots blow up on short notice."

"Hey," Asphodel said calmly, ignoring her servant's attempts at saving face. One hand reached up to tug on the edge of Eleanor's shirt. It was the only sign of nerves that she would allow herself to express. The feeling of energy leaving her body was becoming extremely apparent.

"Let's beat it. I don't feel like waiting to see how many stupid branches of oak it takes before you get tired from holding up an improb." She didn't bother lacing her tone with her usual sweet tones, assessing the situation as far too serious to bother putting up airs. "Are you...you're feeling that too, right?"

                Kesi Naifeh

Kesi wasn't doing too well to begin with. He stood, almost leaning on Cabbage and Potato, wearing a sullen expression and wrapped up in a fleece blanket that had once been his father's. He hadn't done much of anything besides go to his classes, tend to his plants, and stay locked up in the Ekaterina dorms since they found Fado's body. The shock had worn off. He had already cried himself out. The depression was beginning to set in.

He was snapped to his senses when he saw Rowan standing next to Mr. Lockwood in front of The Oak. The talk of hexes and Ian had been white noise to him. He'd known that Ian had been hexed, of course, he just...thought it best to not mention. But now, a public demonstration of punishment by hexing, and Rowan was to be the test subject... Kesi almost felt sick to his stomach.

Perhaps he had missed something? He leaned over to Potato, and whispered, "Wh...Why is Rowan there? What did he do...?"

The beeping hit his ears all at once, and suddenly the world was in slow motion. The tree exploding. Debris flying haphazardly. Rowan suffering a blow to the head and falling over. Kesi barely had time to register a complete thought before a large piece of bark came straight by his face, leaving a gash on his cheek as he stumbled from the shock and fell flat on the ground.

Magnus was, as usual, standing next to Ziza and vaguely pissed off, this time because the CEE was once again being a piece of s**t. Hexing one of the house heads into submission was one thing, but taking someone who he saw every day and doing this to them was in a whole other ballpark. And Lockwood's own kid, no less. Magnus assumed that such a brat would get some privileges, but now he found himself feeling sorry for the kid. Magnus had had some experience with hexes(never mess with magicks who have ties to the mafia), and he knew that whatever would come next would NOT be pretty.

Nonetheless, he was still a sarcastic a*****e, so he turned to Ziza and whispered, ”Maybe they'll make him less ******** ra- What's that sound?." Lucky for him, he and Ziza were standing at the front of the crowd, which gave them full view of the shitstorm. Unluckily for him, it also put them straight in the blast zone.

Magnus was thrown back into the person behind him when the Oak exploded, leaving him battered on the ground while the debris flew. When he came to, he sat up groggily with a hand on his head, and looked over at Ziza with panic in his eyes.

”Oh, Jesus. Ziza, are you okay?!"

Assemblies were bullshit that Amanda tended to tune out, especially when they were right before dinner. They were too hungry to bother listening, and it wasn't like Amanda was one of those kids that caused trouble on purpose so she didn't see how it applied to her.

The half-dwarf patted Bambi behind her absently. The girl was all size and no substance, at least none that Amanda had ever seen. She was pretty confident she could scare Bambi into a corner with nothing but a mouse. Actually, that was totally an idea for later. Maybe Icarus could coax a mouse from somewhere for her. She made a mental note as the Ekat rep stepped forward. She recognized him, of course - he came over to Tomas sometimes and hung out with Icarus, and he had that stupid robot. So he was hexed, huh? No wonder the Ekats were all sort of stuck-up. That sure explained Asha's attitude!

Amanda wasn't really paying attention to the assembly, so the explosion caught them off-guard. The ground rumbled under their feet, and Amanda stumbled in alarm. What was going on!? The last time she'd faced an explosion of this intensity, she--

Laughter. Voices. Celia gushing over the music box they'd bought at the flea market last week. They were out of bread, so she volunteered to run into town.

                            An explosion.

Destruction. Flames licking at the walls, sealing off the out from the in and the in from the out. Screams for help that would never come. Celia. Celia.

"Celia," Amanda murmured, hardly registering Bambi picking them up. Their usual smile was replaced with an unusually somber expression. The next moment, all of Amanda's energy drained out of their limbs, and they sagged in Bambi's grip. Urgh... going fuzzy... this feels familiar, like...

                            magical strain.

"Bambi," Amanda whispered in horror, "something's wrong."

If Potato hadn't been awake before, they sure as hell were when they saw Rowan in front of the Oak.

Her hands rubbed the sleep from her eyes and she yawned loudly at the beginning. They raised an eyebrow at the fact that the Ekat head had agreed to hexing. Who the hell does that? s**t ******** up your head? They didn't understand how that would ever be a willing process. Especially when Rowan stepped forward.

Their eyes bored holes in him. She looked the older Lockwood over. Was this his ******** fault? Was that even a question? They half considered explaining the situation to Cabbage but figured he'd understand it soon enough. A grave look found its way onto their face. Maybe she could cause a disturbance, but it wasn't like there was anything around to cause a disturbance with, and they doubted any distraction would be big enough to get Rowan out of that. What if they just Fleeted him and told him to book it-

Potato was fairly sure that she'd blacked out for about a second there, bumping into Kesi and opening their eyes to a wreckage scene. The ground shook and they felt a nasty gash above their eye. They sure hoped that was a superficial wound. The first thing they registered was that Cabbage and Kesi were on the ground next to them. The next thing they saw was Rowan, on the ground. Jesus, blink and people dropped.

"s**t," they cursed. "Cabb? Cabb, y'ain't dead r- uh. s**t. Punz."

They glanced at the terrified face pressed against the ground and brushed her hair out of her face. Thankfully, it looked like she'd avoided the worst of the spray of loose wood and dirt when she fell, although Potato suspected she'd have a nasty bump later. They looped their arms under her shoulder and pulled her up into a sitting position.

"Good. Y'r- yea. Good." they repeated dumbly, heart hammering in their chest. "Hold tight, 'm gunna go get Ro."

Potato felt a shudder run down her spine and waved Egg to sit down beside their friends. They peered at Kesi - he was down for the count. She squeezed Rapunzel's shoulders and left, shoving their way through the parting crowds over to where Rowan had collapsed. They knelt down next to him and patted his face, pausing when they realized his glasses had been knocked away.

They searched briefly. The glasses were harder to pick out now that they weren't as blue as the bottom of the ocean and Potato was having a hard time seeing out of her left eye (that the cut was starting to bleed) but they weren't invisible. When Potato tried to keen eye with her wand, however, she felt immediately drained in a way she didn't usually. It must have been the tree. They didn't linger on the thought. There were other things to think about.

"'ey, Ro. C'mon, ain't th'time t'be losin y'r s**t," they muttered nervously, sitting beside him again. She pushed the glasses into his hands. "Y'aint dead. ******** hell, th'tree branch w's almost 's big 's ya. Y'lright? Cabb'n Kes'n Egg're waitin back over there when y'got y'r wits back, goddamn.

Ziza's focus was on pretty much anything but this assembly. More specifically, she was still thinking about what Bambi had said, how the other girl had absolutely blown up (lol pun) at her the other day. The fact that Bambi had gotten so angry was what was really throwing her - last time she'd been mad, the half-dwarf had more or less given her the silent treatment. This was different.

She only vaguely registered the Ekat rep (she didn't know him well, Cammy would've been a better judge) and the Lucian kid. She didn't know either of them, and this hexing or whatever didn't concern her. None of her friends would get hexed, she was confident in that (well, Ty was a bare possibility, but he didn't cause a LOT of trouble).

Ziza did register the explosion, because she'd been in a lot of them. She was used to having debris flying at her, especially since most of the opponents she faced were made of clay. Those usually caused superficial cuts, nothing too serious, and Asa always shielded her from the worst of the damage. That was his job. She was the sword, he was the shield.

She was not experienced with wood flying at her at incredibly high speeds. Ziza acted on instinct, but she wasn't fast enough. "Heq--" was as far as she managed before a sliver of wood struck her head, severing her eyepatch's cord and ripping a gash open on her forehead. Ziza yelled and pressed a hand to the wound, trying to stem the flow of blood. (Blood getting into her empty eye socket would be exceedingly troublesome.) "AGH! Magnus - Magnus!?" She turned and looked at the smaller boy, next to her. A sinking feeling took hold in her gut. Where's everyone else?

"Ty?" Ziza called, looking around in the crowd. "Ty? TY!" Another horrible thought took hold, but Ziza kept her panic under control remarkably well. she took a deep breath, and shouted, "CAMILLE!"

Muna was reaching for his marble to summon an improb before Shanta grabbed said arm and yanked him onto Shashi. He gave a little 'oof' as his back hit the carpet, ignoring the way his stomach jumped as Shashi rushed upwards. It was nothing he wasn't used to.

His eyes landed on a very, very large branch flying their way. Hastily, Muna shoved down the sleeve that covered his tattoo, and channeled. The farsi that twisted lazily on his arm stopped and glowed orange, but it took a moment before Muna set up a turtle around the carpet and his friends. The branch hit it with a solid THWACK before it fell for the ground, and Muna let the spell disappear.

Knowing that End didn't do well on fast rides, Muna slipped an arm around his boyfriend's waist to stabilize him. Muna let his eyes rest on the slowly collapsing Tree, feeling something...strange in his body. A feeling that he associated with leaving Wales for adventures outside of the country, as if--as if he was getting weaker, or something.

"....what..." Muna whispered, trying to keep the strain on his vocal chords as minimal as possible. It wasn't exactly a good time to ask Shanta or End to pay attention to his hands or marks in the air. "...what the s**t do we do?"

She knew that the rest of her friends could make it out of danger's way without her, and instead focused on keeping Amanda up in the air where she couldn't risk danger tripping over rocks and the like. The way they had suddenly stopped responding when the explosion happened had been too concerning for Bambi to just abandon her.

Who was Celia? She didn't bother asking. It was an unspoken rule between the two to not ask unless the other wanted to tell.

Amanda's urgent words didn't register or make any sense -- of course something was wrong, the tree of Merlin just exploded -- until Bambi recognized past her adrenaline rush an odd...exhaustion. It was confusing, but Bambi wasn't smart enough to figure it out unless she had a calm moment to herself.

"Shelter," Bambi choked out, trying to put distance between herself and the tree. Where would they go? She had heard of how the Tomas dorms had been burned to the ground; Bambi wasn't going to take her chances there. "We can talk about this after we find a place to be safe!"

The Great Hall? It seemed like a safe bet. Bambi redirected herself. "It's--It's ok," She tried to reassure Amanda. Bambi thought of the headmaster, who had managed to make her despise herself a little less. "The...the headmaster will take care of it."

User Image Elvira's waving hand caught her attention easily - Asha could see the wood chips splintering their arm from a distance. She started to make her way over before she heard Elvira's other words. Get Gwen? Where had she gone?

She took a few more steps before Gwen came into view, facedown in the dirt. Her hands were clutching her ears. So it was the noise that had done her in. Asha wasn't surprised - even her own ears were still ringing. She pried Gwen's hands from either side of her face and sat her upright. Asha wasn't sure if she had the strength to carry Gwen unaided. For some reason, she felt weak.

When she pulled out her wand and tried levitating Gwen, Asha realized that her magical ability felt severely drained. She'd never felt this weak, save for the time she took the trip from Canada to Merlin. Asha stepped beneath the unconscious girl, looping Gwen's arms around her own shoulders and hooking her arms beneath Gwen's knees. She had to bend forward slightly to keep her from toppling over. The pink and white bow that Gwen wore brushed her cheek. She was surprised it hadn't fallen off in the blast.

[Thankfully, she has not been injured by the wood, as far as I have seen,] Asha said after reaching Elvira and Finley. Elvira's arm had been splintered by the wood, she saw. [We need a healer when... whatever this seems to be is over. Are either of you feeling weakened as well?]

Rowan's head was killing him. His ears were ringing and nearly drowned out Potato's words, but their rough drawl still worked its way through to his brain. He closed his fingers around his glasses and slowly pushed himself up, squinting. Had the day been so bright before? God damn.

The entire courtyard was in chaos, but Rowan focused on his friends behind Potato - specifically, the bewildered expression on Cabbage's face. Rowan knew that Cabbage couldn't make that expression - he and Rapunzel must've switched from the explosion. He didn't know what was going on behind him, and if he was being totally honest he didn't care. His father and the other Council members could fend for themselves anyway.

"Fine," Rowan finally managed. "Had worse." It wasn't like he hadn't been concussed before. He looked up at Potato and blinked. "...You're bleeding. Potato - Potato you're bleeding." He moved to get up and the world started spinning. Rowan grabbed at his head. "Ugh. Help - help me up."

xxx→→xThis isn't good, Was the only thing Rapunzel could think as she felt some sort of...gap in her energy. Weaker than weak wasn't exactly a great position to be in--neither was face down on the ground, where there was rubbish flying everywhere. Luckily, none of it had flied in Cabbage's direction.

"I'm--we're--I'm fine," Rapunzel responded to Potato's inquiry, voice shaky. She didn't struggle as Potato dragged her up, trying to stay as still and small as possible. There was too many people around them, too much sound, too much everything. Rapunzel was unable to do anything but swallow and nod as Potato left to go find Rowan, tracking her progress and locking eyes with him--them? she wasn't sure about how Rowan was developing on that front-- before breaking eye contact to make sure Kesi was okay.

Feeling the unbearable pinch of the scrunchie on her hair, Rapunzel quickly pulled it out as she dragged herself over to Kesi's side. Oh dear, he was bleeding. Kesi didn't seem to do well with blood. He hadn't been doing well at all recently, actually, something Cabbage himself had been thinking about very often without realizing that he was on the fringes of experiencing 'worry.'

With hesitant fingers, Rapunzel brushed a bit of Kesi's hair out of his face. It was odd to touch people. "Kesi," Saying their names was even odder. "Kesi, you're bleeding." Rapunzel whispered. "The Merlin-tree just exploded. For some reason."

Rapunzel looked up, breath catching in her chest at the amount of people around her. The entire student body was here. "I think a planned reason," She added in thoughtlessly, hands trembling with nerves. Then she paused.

"Please don't panic," Rapunzel whispered. From what she had seen, Kesi was very good at freaking out and very bad at everything else when he started doing so.

The Oak? It was a little odd for announcements to be held outside. Yvonne was curious when they were called out - disciplinary measures certainly didn't sound good. She'd headed outside with Gil, seeing as the both of them were third years. The moment hexes were mentioned she'd felt a chill. There was Ian, with the same red eyes he'd had for a good number of weeks. It seemed as if they wouldn't break the hex again. At least it was only until he graduated, she thought. And he had been acting mostly the same in terms of personality, not cold as he had with the first hex she'd seen.

Yvonne smiled briefly up at Icarus as he appeared next to her- his comments were reassuring, but she didn't doubt that he was nervous too. She grew stiff at the mention of public hexing. How could anyone do that to children? Especially the one up on the stage. Bearing punishments down on first years was a new low.

Something caught her eye as she was scanning the stage. The man standing next to the sweet-faced therapist. It wasn't just that his hair was blue (she was fairly used to unusual hair colors after almost 3 years around this place) but his eyes, too, were a particularly familiar shade even from her spot inthe crowd. She had just recognized it as the man she'd bumped into a few weeks ago on campus when-

Yvonne trembled with the ground, thankful for Icarus's quick thinking and improb. She and her friends were safe, except... Her eyes widened and her hands shot forward as she poured her magic into another shield spell. She quickly realized that Ian likely wouldn't be able to cast any 'combat' spells, since they had been listed as against the school code and his hex would prevent it. The rising dust and pandemonium made it hard to see if it had worked- Yvonne prayed it did, because she felt as if her magic had been drained away.

"I-it was really th-them, w-wasn't it?," Yvonne whispered after a long pause. "Th-that was-- A-are the two of you o-okay?"

Amanda twisted a little in Bambi's grip, trying to figure out where they were going and what was happening. They spotted Asha in the crowd, which wasn't hard - seriously, the elf could make a basketball team no sweat. It looked like Gwen was passed out on her back, and next to her was probably Elvira and Finley. Amanda wondered where Adriene was. She hoped Adriene was okay too.

God, what the ******** was that back there? It wasn't like Amanda to seize up when it came to danger - they found that they were among the more level-headed when it came to disasters. But explosions were... different. Different and scary.

Amanda squirmed some more and noticed they were headed towards the main building. Wasn't it empty, since all the professors were out there? Oh, right, Bambi had said something about shelter. Amanda was pretty sure they were next to useless in this situation, so she had no problem hiding out somewhere else until the chaos died down. "Yeah," she said quietly, reaching down and patting Bambi's arm, trying to reassure her as much as she was trying to reassure them. "The headmaster will take care of it."
