Hiya all. redface
I got a little book that claims to teach German. I's all very nice, but I've got a small question - how do I know when to use ihr and when ihre, for example? I'm not so sure what the difference is. sweatdrop

I'm not so sure what the difference is. sweatdrop Hi there! wink 'ihr' has a lot of meanings. As a personal pronoun it would be translated 'you guys'. Ihr seid so nett.---> You (guys) are so nice. But it's also a possesive pronoun, that would be translated as 'her'. Ihr Auto ist neu.---> Her car is new. (note: das Auto) Ihr Mann ist treu.---> Her husband is loyal. (note: der Mann) Ihre Katze ist niedlich.---> Her cat is cute. (note: die Katze) Ihre Kinder sind freundlich.---> Her children are friendly. (note: die Kinder) Can you find out when its 'ihr' and when it's 'ihre'? Tipp: As a personal pronoun it's always 'ihr'.

I thought perhaps a defined noun will be referred to as ihre or seine, but that doesn't work...

German grammar can be so hard; especially when they use terms 'nominative,' 'dative,' etc. I'm still working on learning those... sweatdrop

'Ihr(e)' translated into English is 'her'. You add an 'e' at the end when the defined noun is either feminin or a plural. The same goes for 'sein(e)'. Translated into English it's 'his'. seine Mutter (die Mutter, feminine) --->his mothersein Vater (der Vater, masculine) ---> his fatherihr Kind (das Kind, neuter [not sure if that's the proper way to say it, in German it's called 'netrum']) --->her childihre Geschwister (die Geschwister, plural) --->her siblings
