The Duchess closed her eyes. "Unfortunately, society's acceptance does matter. Very much. If you wish to be treasurer of Marcus's funds, that is between the two of you. It is, however, important to note that no matter how 'modest of a sum' he gives you, your money is his, because you will be his wife."
Marcus straightened. "Grandmother..." he began, not liking the sound of this.
"Do not interrupt me, Marcus. In any case, Terryn, I am uninterested in your mother, bless her. What is of importance is your future. I think it is important for you to realize that 'homemaker' is not at all a degrading term."

"As long as you realize that if my money is his money, then logically that makes his money mine. So if you think about it that way, we are both providers and therefore I am more than a double standard." Terryn crossed her arms over her chest, narrowing her eyes. "And it is not I who gives the title of homemaker a lowered position in society. It is society itself that does that."

"There is a difference between earning money and keeping it," began the Duchess, before sighing and looking to the remarkably unhelpful earl and her equally unhelpful grandson. "Talk some sense into this girl, either of you."

The earl averted his gaze. "Forgive me, Emily. I have tried to change her perspective for years, and her mother's before that, but they are equal willful." He glanced up at his daughter, smiling softly. "It is one of the reasons I married her."

"...And one of the reasons that I plan to," chimed in Marcus. He swallowed. "I think, Gran, that we can divide our labors without any help, but thank you anyway."

Terryn's gaze darted towards Marcus, her fearsome edge melting away slightly. She smiled softly, unclenching her fists and releasing her napkin back onto her lap. At least she knew that he wouldn't be treating her like a lapdog.

The Duchess exhaled, setting her fork down. Clearly, she was dismayed. This wasn't proper. It wasn't tradional. But it was futile to try and help them. Fine. Let him blunder, once again. "Very well," she answered stiffly. "If you insist."

The earl rolled his eyes, a small grin on his face. It reminded him of when he had brought home Terryn's mother to his parents for the first time. He had relayed the experience to the duchess afterwards and made a mental note to remind her how much she sounded like his mother.

Marcus, on the other hand, couldn't stop staring at his glass. He couldn't believe that he had actually put an end to one of Gran's tirades. And in public, too. This was a monumental achievement.

Terryn finished eating rather quickly, not wanting to stay around the tension any longer. As soon as she was finished, she excused herself and exited into the gardens to go get herself lost.

Marcus stood up not long after that. He made eye contact with both of them, found that words were not necessary, and followed Terryn into the gardens. He couldn't help but feel a little disappointed that everything couldn't be happy right now. He was engaged, for God's sake.

Terryn was currently wandering around the rose bushes. There weren't as many as there were in her garden, but they were still nice. There were some exotic colors too. Purple and peach and a few white ones as well.

Marcus had already figured that Terryn would be at the roses, and he situated himself on a bench at the far end, which was clustered with richly colored yellows. When she did come, in about a minute or so, he raised his hand. "Pick me."

Terryn looked startled for a second before she noticed who it was on the bench. She grabbed his hand and tried tugging at it. "I am trying, but I can not get the bud off." Smiling, she sat down next to him, still holding his hand.

Marcus grinned. "Try harder," he advised, leaning in to kiss her briefly. He tried not to look overly pleased with himself. "Did you see all of that? I actually stood up to the woman. And she retreated."
