Ooooo... I see. :::She gives an understanding nod, and sips her wine:::

There's something similar in in Omegatropolis. Except we don't call it graduating. We call it moving. I remember hearing that schooling stopped after a certain number of years, hundreds of years ago... Max has reached the end then?

*Luke raises his eyebrows. That was an interesting way of putting it.* Yeah, I guess he has. *kicks back his beer with a shrug* Of college anyway.

:::Sipping some more:::

What profession is he assigned to? :::But she corrects herself::: Or... he gets to choose one, right?
PostPosted: Fri Dec 08, 2006 9:33 am

*Luke nods.* Right. *takes a breath* He is receiving his degree in Business Administration with a minor in Finance.

*adds* So... naturally, he got a job as a Security Guard.

:::Cora appeared to be confused for just a second, but then her expression turned into a grimmace:::

Like me...

*Luke quirks an eyebrow. Then he laughs a little.* No, no, Slim. YOU were Robo-Cop. Max is Rent-A-Cop.

:::She shakes her head:::

No, what I mean is... I was classified to become a bioradiometry engineer. But when we come of professional age in Omegatropolis, we are given two choices; enter the field you're assigned to, or apply for the Force. For which you must undergo screening before being accepted...

:::She stares down at her glass for a moment:::

Tell him from me, from personal experience... it's a bad idea.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 08, 2006 9:45 am

*Luke makes a little noise of impatience. He opens his mouth to tell her about how his time isn't like hers was, and that it's not the same system when ... He stops and says.* Why is it a "bad idea"?

Alex once showed me on a Television, what Law and Order was like in the 21st century. I can't tell whether it's worse in your time, or in mine.

:::She appeared concenred:::
PostPosted: Fri Dec 08, 2006 9:47 am

*Luke lets out a laugh.* You watched "Law and Order"? And you think that's what law is like in the 21st century?

:::She tried to remember:::

Well, Alex told me... that it wasn't so dramatic...

:::trying to redeem herself::: But that there was a lot of descent and scandal and that the system was terribly flawed... And I learned about it in the history of law enforcement as well. It's true. You may not know it though! I had no idea what was wrong with our systems until I came here and thought about it from outside of them.

*lower his eyes* ....You think -I- don't know the system is flawed? *makes a cynical noise* Babe...

*Luke shakes his head. He stops, frowns a little, and ... takes a secound to get through any emotions that arose. When he glances up, he appears more put together.*

The way the American legal system works, people who have been wronged are not heard. When they are, they're judged by twelve people - or in most cases which don't even -go- to court - less than twelve people, with their own agendas and misconceptions. Most people don't even know the laws. Some -lawyers- don't even know the laws, and even if they -think- do, they could misconstrue their original intent.

People are not represented like they should be. *shrugs* Not only that - most people working in the system... are self-serving and corrupt. We need to find a way to stop rewarding them for it.

It needs to change, and that's why people like ... well like Alex - and like me - are doing something about.

Right. Which is why I don't want to see Max entering that... even if it's the enforcement side of it. He... could get hurt. :::Cora suddenly felt like hiding her arm under the table but resisted the urge:::

:::She couldn't imagine what else she had to say to get her point across:::
PostPosted: Fri Dec 08, 2006 10:15 am

*Luke relaxed a little at that.* Well, it's not like .... he's protecting the President of the United States.

Cora, he's not even a cop. He's working at Boscov's ...

:::She took that to mean that he wasn't entering into a high risk position:::

Still... I think he'd be much better off using the skills he's aquired through his formal education. Tell him, I said so. :::She looked more concerned than anything:::
