Terryn glanced up, her eyes betraying the obvious answer. "Who else?" She shook her head, trying fruitlessly to comfort herself with Marcus's grasp.

Marcus sighed. Oh. So it really was something to be worried about. "Terryn, I fully intend to be with you just about every waking moment. And your father is as protective as ever. What could she do?"

"I do not know." Terryn shut her eyes, trying to get that woman's face out of her mind's eye. "That is why I am so afraid."

"Be reasonable. You have no reason to be afraid. She can do nothing," Marcus answered firmly, speaking with such conviction that even he himself was half swayed. "Don't see her, if you wish. Tell your father that you do not wish to return home. Gran would have no objection to your staying here, especially once we've announced this," Marcus told her, tapping the ring lightly.

"No, that is what she desires." Terryn's eyes fluttered open again as she leaned against her now fiance. "She wants me gone. She wants my mother's possessions, my father's land. She is completely awful..."

Marcus frowned. He seemed to be doing that frequently as of late. "But...we cannot drive her out. So unless we--both of us--stayed at your father's manor..."

Terryn, sensing his unease starting up, simply shrugged as she forced herself to calm down as best she could. "We shall think of something. At the very least we have each other, which I suppose must be something if so many authors choose to write of it."

Marcus nodded slowly. He glanced behind them, and saw the earl and the Duchess still talking. "Then we can still tell them?" He wanted so badly to tell someone, especially Gran. Because, for the first time, he hadn't gone and done something stupid. This wasn't a blunder. He had done this properly.

Terryn gave him a smile, if only for his sake, and nodded. "Of course we can." She leaned over to kiss him softly before hiding her left hand underneath the table. "I daresay we could all use a happy announcement."

Marcus beamed. "Good. I'm glad to hear it." And there was no doubt that he really was thrilled to hear it.
The Duchess sighed. "I suppose that we could go back inside now?" she asked, almost sulkily.

The earl nodded, extending his hand to her. "I am sure that they will be wondering what we are doing were we to take any longer."

The Duchess nodded and rose, incredibly disappointed in Marcus. The boy just never failed to let her down. She sighed, took the earl's arm, and started inside.

"Here they come." Terryn released Marcus's hand and turned in her seat as the pair entered. "We were getting worried." Well, not really. At least, not about them.

"We assumed as much," the Duchess answered, sounding rather gloomy. "Besides which, it is decidedly chilly in the gardens." Even her usually impeccable hair seemed to have wilted.

The earl chuckled slightly. Being on the slightly rotund side, he was much better insulated from the cold than the poor woman next to him. "Come now, it was not so bad." He grinned and pulled her chair out for her, pushing her in before taking his own seat. "I trust you two have had a pleasant day together?"
