Bologna Sandwich.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. It means "Bull s**t". (Am I allowed to say that in this guild?)

Only reason Webber regards Forsyth as a genius is that they're friends. Not only that, but in Forsyth's foreword in the novel PoM, which this is based on, he ripped Leroux to shreds, calling him some moronic, unrealistic git, and then saying Webber really needed to be credited with the creation of the characters. It's all a big circle of BS when it comes to those two.

Which is disgusting in my opinion. Its almost like legal plagerism, he steals ideas and claims he is the original creator but does so under the veil of copyright. He bought it out and now axcts as though he was the brain that thought it all up. I remember that forward, which confused me out of my wits when I first read it, by the way. I had no idea what Forsyth was talking about when he said that the "only logical" ending would not be if Erik died, but if he ran away. I never understood that. Now that I do, I hate that man. No creativity and he takes credit belonging to others. (Forsyth).

Forsyth took a cue from Webber. Webber's most famous shows are all based on stories already in print (Book of Practical Cats= Cats; Biblical stories= JCS and Joseph....Dreamcoat; PotO= ALW'S PotO, et cetera)

Yes, you're allowed to curse. Just do it in moderation, please.

Webber also uses scores from other composers. Mainly Puccini for PotO, but he's copied others with his other musicals. And you notice the man's done like, a couple dozen works and only about half a dozen are famous? The only ones that have really been popular were CATS and PotO, both being the longest running shows on Broadway.

He's an all-around plagerist, and he thinks he's a bloody genius.

Also, I don't think he bought the rights. It's just public forum since Leroux is dead and PotO was defined an old classic by the eighties. As far as I know, the Leroux family refuses to sell the rights to Gaston's story and characters to anyone.

Yes, I know about Cats and the Others. It makes me wonder if there was a single play he wrote entirely out of his own talent.

I did not know, however, about the musical scores. I was under the impression that he at least made those himself, just not the lyrics. I do not know much about music I am afraid, but that is greatly dissapointing. My fondness of Webber decreases everyday it seems. As my respect.

Well, I think the plagiarism charges are debatable, although there have certainly been enough accusations that it seems unlikely they were all coincidental.

For instance, ALW won this case against songwriter Ray Repp in 1998. Repp claimed ALW had copied Phantom of the Opera from his 1978 song Till You.

Just looking at the two scores, I agree that this is most likely the right ruling. (Interestingly enough, one site says Sarah Brightman helped him compose this song. I didn't know that.)

Quote:
Listeners of the opera might perceive that it bears some resemblance to Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical The Phantom of the Opera. An example of this is shown in Webber's aria for the Phantom, Music of the Night. A segment of it appears to be taken right from Johnson's excerpt Quello che tacete, which is located near the end of the first Act of The Girl of the Golden West. However, it has never been proved whether Lloyd Webber looked to The Girl of the Golden West for ideas.

I listened to Quello che tacete, and they are pretty similar. This is probably the most believable of the claims. It's definitely more believable than this next one:

Quote:
Yeah, the beginning of that bloody Phantom song is from Echoes. *DAAAA-da-da-da-da-da* [sic]. I couldn't believe it when I heard it. It's the same time signature - it's 12/8 - and it's the same structure and it's the same notes and it's the same everything. b*****d. It probably is actionable. It really is! But I think that life's too long to bother with suing Andrew ******** Lloyd Webber.

I also listened to Echoes and I think this is just coincidence. It's a descending chromatic scale. Kind of hard to say anyone stole a scale from anyone else. I could find lots of songs with that same five-note lick.

And I don't think ALW is any less "famous" than any other musical composer. Probably more famous now with those stupid reality shows he's done for casting The Sound of Music, Grease, Dreamcoat and whatever else. The average person probably could name as many of his musicals as they could Rodgers & Hammerstein's or Sondheim's.

Anyway, sorry to get so off-topic. Er...sequel. Yes. Bad idea. I have never hated anyone so much as when I watched this clip.

"Persuaded", my arse. He doesn't need persuasion to make as much money as he can.

Wow, thanks for all that info, Mir. o_o I wouldn't have had the time to look up that case and dig deeper on it.

Haha, you're welcome. Just the fact that googling "andrew lloyd webber plagiarism" brings up as many results as it does says something.

And the fact that I never thought to google that says something about me. XD

Long story short, though, the man is overrated.

Wow. That's pretty sad that even google comes up with something like that. I wonder if he's ever been sued over such things and who he's going to plagerise for the sequel.

Just slapping "PHANTOM" on it doesn't make it good. Yeah, it's a sequel, but it's nothing dozens of shitty writers haven't hacked up before. Set it to music, and you have something the soldiers in Iraq can use to torture the enemy with.

I'll have to listen to some of those songs. That last comparison, however, is pretty bad... PotO is NOT in 12/8!!!
