If Mattie hadn’t been so pissed, he might have noticed that his little glare had... pretty much no affect on the albino. Instead it provoked an amused eyebrow quirk and a subtle curving of the lips, two indications that Bacio found this entire ‘tough guy’ act somewhat of a joke. And they said this boy might be a threat when older... hah. No-one was invulnerable, not never. There was always some flaw, some Achilles heel to take advantage of, something or someone that they would yield for. It would be easier since Mattie had the ‘******** the world’ attitude going, too. Bacio just had to watch him, while doing her other work, break him and then hand him to Vanessa on a silver platter. The boy might not like it, but no-one said he had to.
The bump broke her from her thoughts, sending her back quite a few paces. A scowl broke onto her face. Well, if that’s how it was going to be then, she’d play his game. It was war, and Bacio had the upper hand. She didn’t even need to delve into the dark arts to make a student’s life a living nightmare. She was a teacher. That’s what they did.
”Today, class, is your first Defence class with me.” No hellos, no smiles, Bacio just slammed her books down on the desk and watched the class jump with a smirk. ”My name is Ms Argento, and I’ll be picking up where your last teacher’s pathetic attempts at teaching left off.”
“Ah, miss... he’s dead... shouldn’t you be more sympathetic?”
The nosy shoe-licker in the front row sniffled a bit as if that would make her point clearer.
”People die every day, princess.” Bacio was already writing on the board, pale fingers starting to dye themselves blue with the chalk she was using. ”Better get used to it or you’ll be snivelling your entire life. NOW.”
Another jump ”Seating arrangements, they’re written here. Get moving before my first assignment is ten pages long, or something.”

Well, it couldn’t be that bad of an idea. They’d said to steer clear for the night, so she had. Out of kindness, mind. She didn’t have to. She didn’t have to follow orders, she just couldn’t let them die (on purpose) on her watch. But that meant she couldn’t really let them out of her sight. Well. Range. She didn’t really have sight. Just essence-sight. It was difficult to explain to you humans. Oopsie, there went the fourth wall.
Piper shuffled awkwardly behind her oversized glasses and blinked at the back of Mattie’s head. He’d moved over a row from his original spot to sit next to Marquis, but both looked a little… uhm. Dead. No, not dead. Uhhh. Stuff? Stiff? Stiff. Piper wondered what on earth could cause that. (lolinnuendo) She blinked at them both. How straaange. They usually spoke. Or did that weird mouth-to-mouth thing. Kissing. Maybe they needed assistance.
“Pssst. Guuuuuys. Hey~!” Piper was in disguise, by the way. She’d shifted into the form of a girl she’d seen in library books. Some Hermione Granger chick. Apparently she was smart! Piper wished she was smart in human culture. But this Hermione chick didn’t have glasses, so Piper needed to add those. The one thing Piper knew about humans was tha they freaked out at djinni eyes. Who knew why.
“Whaaaasssuuup?” That one she’d learned from a talking letter. She still wasn’t quite sure what it meant. It was rather difficult to whisper it too.

Mattie looked mortified. Some chick that looked identical to a young Hermione Granger with glasses – had to be Piper—was whispering obscene slang phrases to him. He looked like he’d just choked on a Chocolate Frog. And Marq’s hair should not smell like—Mattie turned around and focused on what CrazyBitch was writing on the board. The screech of the chalk was enough to send enough pain through his skull to keep him focused.
“Hey.” He scribbled messily on a corner of his textbook. “So. Ever heard of this b***h?” He quietly ripped out the corner of the textbook ant passed it to Marquis, more obviously turning to Piper as the distraction. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
It was going to be a long day.

ISomeone up there hated him. Marquis wasn’t sure he could deal with Mattie at a distance today, let alone close enough that the Veela charm would start to gnaw at his willpower. Despite the throbbing pain he was picking up from Mattie’s side of the bracelet, the closer Marquis got to him the more he felt the urge to tackle the other boy and finish what they started last night. Even if Mattie pushed him away... which he would. The thought made Marquis’ shoulders slump a little in depression, and slump further into his bench when he sat down next to the other boy. No chance. There couldn’t be, none at all. Hell, Mattie probably wasn’t even gay... he didn’t look it.
Marquis, on the other hand, did. Not because he dressed up or anything, but the structure and hair certainly left things open to question. He knew he was fine-boned, too, bird-like. Great, now he was feeling insecure. Shoulda tied his hair back even if it was wet, even if it would have tried in a painful manner. He brushed some of it back, trying to keep it out of his face and not look at Mattie at the same time. It didn’t work so well, especially when an obnoxious comment from behind made him glance back.
”Piper?” He sounded bemused, before turning back to the front on feeling Mattie’s hand brush against his own. Ohgodsohgodscontact. Not what he needed. He was thinking like a girl, and that couldn’t be good. Awkward.
“Nope, but no surprise there.” He was slipping it back when it hit him. From the front of the classroom a large, wooden chalk-board eraser came hurtling at the blonde’s head, hitting him slap-bang on the forehead as he glanced up. Bacio was smirking.
”Passing notes in class is strictly forbidden.” The albino almost purred, before turning back to the board, leaving Marquis with a stinging forehead.

A very long day. Mattie felt the eraser hit Marquis’ head, probably more than Marquis did, and only because Mattie was use to keeping a face morestoic than death itself did he not have a verbal reaction. He ******** hated hangovers. Mattie snatched up the eraser and threw it right back at the teacher, ignoring all the wide-eyed stares of his classmates, or Piper’s “lolcoool” behind him.
“You dropped it.” Mattie growled. Sitting next to Marquis and trying not to think about… last night, was enough. He didn’t need this b***h on top of everything.

The eraser slammed against the chalk-board with a dusty tunk, and the clack it made as it fell to the floor was the only sound in the classroom. Bacio let the pause pregnate for a precious few seconds, hand poised at the board and the chalk-dust settling around her. Then, without turning around, her voice came clear and calm.
"De'Medici, detention, Forbidden Forest, tonight. You're missing Quidditch practise."
There was no room for argument, and time restarted as Bacio finished off the last of her instructions with a gratuitous flick of the wrist.
"Alright, it's a project you lot should have done at the beginning of the year but your useless - yes, Smith, he was useless - lump of a teacher appears to have forgotten it. You're to pick a magical creature, one that has powers that can influence humans, and answer these questions about it. Any questions on your topic, see me, otherwise open your books and start looking."

Despite not being allowed to be off campus, this was not Mattie’s first time in the Forbbiden Forest. He knew the non-paths quite well, and where not to go even better. Those muscles didn’t just appear y’know. While Marquis went on morning jogs, Mattie went out and beat stuff up. Nothing said good morning like punching a unicorn. So if CrazyBitch’s intentions were to scare him by taking him out of his comfort zone? She’d messed up. Bad. Mattie brought his wand with him, too. He still remembered his basics, but none of them were really legitimate defense spells. Worse came to worst, he could stick her with the wand. He was old-fashioned like that.
Mattie scowled at one of the bugs on the tree and watched it scamper. There wasn’t much magical about being a pissy Veela in the moonlight. It was more akin to meeting a harpy in the Forbbiden Forest. Mattie’s headache had resided considerably, but he wanted to beat something up. He’d missed out on Beating practice. This bloody better be good.

There was nothing out of the ordinary in the forest tonight. No unicorn slayings, no attacking centaurs, just the quiet, forest sounds. So there was no warning as a spell, a deceptive mild purple in colour, slammed its way into Mattie’s back and sent him careering across the clearing they’d met in. Bacio might have been tiny, but she was incredibly good at moving quietly when she wanted to. It was almost like she’d appeared from nowhere, out of the trees like a dryad, and her face was in that damnable smirk as she watched the boy stumble to his feet.
”You’re in a forest and your defence was down? Stupid boy.” It was as if she hadn’t just thrown him about. ”The first key to defence isn’t spells or tricks, it’s keeping yourself open for attack anywhere, anytime. You should try relaxing, kid. Or take the stick outta your a**, either one. Now get up and just try to hit me.”
She knew he wanted to.

Son of a b***h that hurt. Mattie had a facefull of silvery grass. He slowly pushed himself up, ignoring the pain in his lower back. He’d had worse. He glared at Ms. ********, and took out his wand. Not like he was going to use it, but whatever. It was distraction. What the ******** was that she cast on him? Who the ******** cared. He was still bigger. He threw his scarf off, and charged at her. That b***h was gonna eat dirt.

He did exactly what she expected to. Bacio hardly moved from where she lounged against a tree, simply smirking a little more and flicking her wrist. She murmered her spells, thinking that saying them out loud was flashy and pointless in a proper fight, and before Mattie knew it he was flying through the air, this time upwards towards one of the trees where Bacio let him drop on a large branch.
"You see, you're letting anger rule you. It has a place but, ultimately, gets you completely and utterly ******** over in the end."
It was like she was giving another lecture.

<********> Mattie got the wind knocked out of him from the thick branch hitting his ribs. He took a second to breathe again, slowly pushing himself up. He needed to figure this out. She was expecting him to rush her, but that was all he could do. He wanted to ******** punch her in the ******** face. What else could he do? Cast Wingardium leviosa on her? She might be light enough. Ugh.
Mattie did something that he himself considered predictable, (and Marquis probably would’ve considered very typical) but to Bacio might’ve taken her by surprise; instead of climbing out of the tree, he leapt at her. Completely ready to kick her in the ribs, too.

Needless to say, Bacio had not been expecting the stupid boy to launch himself at her. Of all the stupid things to do. Her gut reaction was to send a killing curse his way – it was a nasty habit she developed when shocked – but thankfully she clamped down on herself enough to skitter backwards and lessen the blow. A difficult task, considering she just had a man almost triple her size almost land on top of her. The momentum was enough to force her backwards, where she rolled off to the side and crouched, a wild thing with grass and sticks in her hair. She was, however, smiling: a toothy, nasty smile.
”Better... but only just.” Her hand went to her chest, where the majority of the blow had hit. ”But what do you do when someone does this?”
Another mumble, another swish and flick, and Mattie found his back to the tree not once, twice or even thrice. Unless he was able to break his hold, Bacio would go for a good ten beatings before letting him go.

To the best of his knowledge, Mattie had never been beat up. The only times when he was actually smaller than most boys being when he was about seven. And there isn’t much to fight for at seven years of age. His family always went for blackmail and emotional trips over any sort of corporeal punishment, and his brother was probably incapable of throwing punches. The only kid who’s ever challenged him wa Marquis, and even they hadn’t flat out brawled.
Well. Depending on definition.
But it was more than reasonably that instead of the normal reaction of, like, hurt? Mattie was simply stunned that he was being beaten. It hadn’t really registered for him that he could use magic to fight. So while being beaten repeatedly with his back to the tree, the only thing that crossed his mind was along the lines of sheer determination to learn magic and combine it with the gun. Oh, he still hadn’t forgotten about that gun. He wanted his own now.
Mattie spat in her general direction. Time to try something different. “Expelliramus!” He’d quite honestly forgotten what the spell meant (the previous DA teacher hadn’t been this... well. Hands on.) and was really hoping it was something nasty.

By this stage of the game, Bacio had refound her feet and was watching her work with a satisfied smirk, the glimmering hint of a too-sharp canine catching the moonlight between her lips. Some might call this an unfair fight, with no honour, but it was all fun and games to the albino woman. The thuds were becoming duller the more she hit, and she pulsed more pressure into them to get back the nice, sharp sound she’d had at the beginning of the exercise.
Then he fought back. Ooooh, that was better! A mildly puzzled look came to Bacio’s face as Mattie managed to disarm her, before it broke into a grin.
”Oh that’s much better. Use your head, boy, or whatever it is you call that lump on your neck. Going after something like a bull in heat is just going to get you kicked in the balls.” Her wand jumped into her hand as if pulled by fishing wire, and with a quick swish any and all enchantments she’d cast on Mattie were gone. Her smile was beguine. ”That’s detention done, then. Perhaps if you keep being a dickwad I’ll get to toughen you up a little more later. Sleep well, de’Medici.”
She was gone as fast as she came, leaving Mattie alone in a very dangerous, dark forest.
Meanwhile, back in the Gryffindor tower, Marquis was lying awake, sweat rimming his brow, and wondering what the hell he’d eaten to make his back hurt like this.

Mattie watched her wand fly off to the side and stood up to try and charge her again while she wasn’t armed. But poor bruised-up Mattie against Bacio’s re-arming speed? He barely had even stood up when she had armed herself again. Damnit. He just stayed still, wand at the somewhat-ready (depending on what he could remember from the classes he’d all but slept through), and glaring bloody murder at CrazyBitch.
And then she declared the detention was over. Mattie didn’t really know what to do. He was really tempted to try just throwing something at this point, but he wanted to learn a few spells before their next detention. Oh yes, he would be making a point of being a ‘d**k-wad’ in her classes now. He wasn’t going to be beaten up by some anemic midget. Hell no.
He growled out a final threatening, “It’s Mattie,” before slouching against the tree. Gods his back hurt. And his lungs. He was beginning to hate trees. He felt something skitter up his arm and smashed it against the tree without thinking twice. That was gunna bruise. Well, the spider thing that had attempted an attack was dead. Whatever. The hulking Slytherin decided at this point that it would be better to be in his dorm, rather than out with the spiders in the forest. He shoved himself upright and began the long walk back to the Slytherin dungeons. He’d have to make a quick stop at the library first.
The library was still dominated by the strange short trembly chick who helped them find Piper. Mattie didn’t have time to waste at this point, so he just ignored all the terrified looks he got and got straight to the point. “I need a book on Defence Against the Dark Arts.”
The girl squeaked and shoved some text-book like thing at him off the check-in rack. Mattie didn’t bother saying thank you. He had more important things to do. He was hardly intending to sleep that night.
_____
Well, almost. He dozed off early in the morning, but he’d managed to get a good bit of reading done. He liked the looks of ‘stupify’, and the uses he’d seen for ‘wingardium leviosa’. Apparently some first year had taken out a troll with it. Huh. Mattie still had the book with him at the Slytherin breakfast table, hardly touching his own food.
