The hallway was filled with the happy whistling of Kendra as she walked on down to her room, her arms holding two large brown bags. She had just gotten back from the store and was on her way to the tedious task of putting everything away. She was almost to her door when she heard the loud thud from beyond the thin apartment walls.
What was that, she thought as she stopped dead. It had come from Logan's room and was quite loud. She listened and found that she could hear the sound of the shower running. What if he had fallen and hurt himself? She couldn't just ignore it. He could be totally fine, she argued as she put the groceries down by the wall and turned around on her heel. She searched around in her purse as she ran, her fingers finally finding the silver spare key to his room.
What was she too say? Oh, it didn't matter. She just needed him to be okay. She unlocked the door and entered the room, retrieving her key and shutting the door. She rushed to the bathroom door and pressed her self against it. She wanted to open it but more than one moral scolded her for even having the thought.
"Logan?" she called out, quite loudly in an effort to be heard over the water, "Are you okay? I was walking by when I heard the noise. I thought you might have fallen."

Logan almost didn't hear the sound of Kendra's voice over the sound of the water running. But he stopped in the middle of attempting to pick up the shampoo bottle when he heard the sound. He glanced up at the door, his eyebrows arching in question.
"Ah....yes," he called out, not sure if she would be able to hear him or not. "Yes I'm fine. I just knocked over some bottles..."
The first thought that crossed his mind was that he was glad she hadn't come inside. That would have been rather awkward....Then he wondered how she had even heard him at all. She could have been coming back to check on him or something, just passing by in the hallway. He didn't know. But he made a mental note of it, perhaps to call her later or something. But for the time he was still struggling to actually keep himself from falling.

Kendra's heart beat wildly in her chest as she listened. She sighed in relief as his voice called above the water.
"Oh, alright then. Sorry to intrude. I- I just thought you might have fallen. If alls well I'll be going then."
With that she left the door and headed out of the apartment. She was glad to see her bags where still where she had left them. She hoped he hadn't taken that the wrong way. She... she had just been so worried. Tears gathered in her eyes as she thought about it. She just didn't want any more harm to come to him.
Brushing the wetness from the corner of her eyes, she bent down low and retrieved her things. This... was going to be hard on her. She was letting her feelings get to strong. I can't let this take control of me, she scolded herself as she unlocked her own apartment door and walked in. She set the food upon the counter and shut the front door before striding to her home phone and pressing the "play messages" button.
The voice of her mother started from the speaker on the phones side and she winced at her words.
"Kendra dear, its your mom. We haven't heard from you recently and I was just starting to miss you. The paper work went through all right. I'm happy you got this to work for you. I know how hard it is to leave your school so close to you graduating. It just... we miss you dear... So very much. Please, call us? Tell us you're okay? Oh my,... I mean, we know you're all right. Aha, listen to an old woman stress herself out. Just be careful dear and as I said, call us! We love you very much. Bye~!"
Guilt over came her as she eased herself onto one of the barstools that lined one side of the kitchen island and made it into a makeshift kitchen table. She had almost forgotten about what she had done... Forged a government paper. Oh... she was in deep trouble if something went wrong.
She sighed as she ran a hand through her hair and stood once more. "Can't let these things go to waste," she said aloud, talking about the food. She thought as she walked around her small kitchen putting things in their appropriate places. Everything was going to go ahead as planned. She had plenty of time to break the news to Logan before they would even start thinking about checking up on her. As long as she kept her mother happy, they wouldn't send out someone from the state to check on her. Why would they? There was no reason for them to.
Once everything was put away she folded up the bags and took the home phone from its cradle. The buttons made a melody of blips as she pressed in the number to her mother. The low grinding tone came from the speaker in waves as she held it to her ear and waited. There was a click and then a hello as her mother answered.
"Hey mom, its me," she said with a smile.

Logan continued to stare at the wall for a while before shaking it off. 'She's just concerned...' he thought as he picked up the bottles. 'It's nice. She's nice. I've always known that. She was one of my favorite students from the beginning. And.....my, I forgot that she was one of my students. In all of this I suppose I forgot. Well, I hope we can still stay in contact after she graduates. She's become a good friend, too.'
It took him a bit longer, but he finished the rest of his shower without incident. It took him a bit longer to get dressed again and he had to use his bed to keep his balance, but he did it on his own. He put the arm sling back on but left his eye bandage in the bathroom. He didn't need it now, he might as well not wear it.
His hair dripped down his neck and created a nice wet circle around the neckline of his shirt as he hobbled into the living room. He still used the crutch for support, but attempted to see if he could use his left leg with the cast on. He could, but it was rather unsteady with a slightly rounded bottom, so he still relied slightly on the crutch. He went over to the counter around his kitchen and took a seat, taking in another deep breath.
"Jeez, living on my own was never this difficult. If I keep this up, I'll be sweaty again before I even go to bed," he muttered to himself, letting out a small chuckle. "Aaahh...and now I'm talking to myself...."

Kendra gave a sigh as she placed the phone back into its cradle, the plastic uttering an audible click as it hit the stand. She shuffled over to her couch wearily. The day had been long and she was exhausted. All she wanted to do was sleep.
"I still have homework to do," she said, trying to convince her self that she shouldn't sit down upon the couch and turn the TV on. It didn't work well apparently for she plopped herself down upon the comfy, plush seat and reached out for the remote. Upon pressing the "on" button something within the TV snapped into place as energy flowed through it and the sound of static crackling across the glass front joined with the slow whine of it powering up hummed through the room. She flicked through the channels until she came upon some old black and white film she had probably seen more than a few times prior. It didn't matter to her, she loved them all. There was something about the simplicity of them all that drew her in.
She placed the remote back down upon the small, glass table and pulled out her cell from her pocket. The phone made a small noise as she pressed a button on the side to check the time. It wasn't that late, she thought, and her phone wasn't on silent so she would hear it if it rang. Knowing this she placed it along beside the remote and lied down, grabbing a blanket from the back of the couch. A little nap would be good for her, she convinced herself as she snuggled into one of the pillows and curled herself up into a small ball. It was so warm, she couldn't help but slip into a lite sleep.
"Jeremy,... Please, don't go. Without you, I am nothing!"
"I'm sorry, I have to. The world depends on me. I can't stand and watch as the devil claims our land as his own."
"But.... "
"Here, let me take you into my arms, one last time."
"No,... Not the last. I'll go with you!"
"Its dangerous! I can't let you do that."
"Don't be foolish. I'd rather die by your side than stay here, pining away with the notion that I was helpless to protect you..... Jeremy,... I shall shoulder your pain. Together, we can do this. Your hate is my hate, your sadness mine, and yours wounds shall be upon me as well."
"Carol... I... I love."
"And I love you as well.... Nothing can stop us nor stop me. I'll protect you. From everything. I'm your guardian. At least until I can no longer protect you."

Logan spotted the small slip of paper Kendra had slipped him with her phone number on it. He stared at it, as in order for him to get it, he would have to get up and walk to the other side of the kitchen. His phone lay out on the counter top in front of him. He sighed. He needed to not be so reluctant to move. His muscles were already weak from his lack of activity, he would have to change that.
So slowly, he pushed himself up away from the chair and, once again, hobbled over to the sink, this time without his crutch. He used the counters for balance, reaching out for the next and pulling himself along. He grabbed the paper and then made his way back to the other counter.
He changed his mind at the last minute and decided to go to the couch in stead. He grabbed his phone off of the counter and slowly walked to the couch. Rather than slowly lowering himself down, he just let his body fall which he immediately regretted. After a moment of recovery, he pulled his phone out and programed her number into it. He glanced up at a clock to make sure she wouldn't be in bed yet. Should he call her? He felt like a teenage boy again. 'Man, I don't know if I should call her. Is it too soon? Or is she just waiting by the phone? I don't know, man! What should I do?'
He laughed quietly to himself as he selected the number. It dialed and he waited until he heard it ring.

Kendra jolted up into a sitting position as a grinding 'bvzt' noise sounded from her phone vibrated across the table's glass surface. It took her a moment to gather that it was indeed someone calling her. She snuggled with her blanket as she reached out with her other hand and gripped her smooth phone.
The lit screen on the front displayed a number she wasn't acquainted with and she gave a mental shrug before flipping it open and pressing the speaker to her ear.
"Hello?" she said, the grogginess of her voice surprising her.

Logan paused at the sound of Kendra's voice. There was silence on his end of the phone for a short moment before he spoke. "I'm sorry, did I wake you?" he asked, looking up at the clock above his television once again. It wasn't very late, so he had just assumed she would be awake.
A wave of guilt washed over him as he realized that perhaps she was exhausted from everything, mainly to do with him. "I'm sorry," he repeated quickly. "Go back to sleep, it's not important. I can talk to you tomorrow."

"don't be silly," yawned Kendra as she gave her blanket a final hug before standing and walking to the kitchen. She took a clean glass from the cupboard and filled it with water. "What can I do for you?" she said before taking a swig of the crystal liquid, the cool refreshment sliding down her throat. Thankfully she had figured out who exactly it was and made a mental note to make sure she added his number to her phone.

Logan paused as he listened to her, his eyes lifting up to the clock once again. "Oh, it's nothing important," he repeated. "I just thought I'd thank you again for all the help you've given me. Um...and for checking on me earlier today." He felt slightly awkward saying it, but he was thankful that at least she cared enough to see if he was alright when she thought he fell. He tried to ignore the details of the incident, but found it difficult not to think about it.
He snapped out of the memory and looked at the blank TV screen. "By the way....how did you hear me? Where you just walking by in the hall or something?"

Kendra nodded but then scolded herself for being so stupid. He couldn't see her.
"Ah, yes I was actually. I had to get some food to fill up my fridge so I went out shopping. I was on my way to my room. I walk by... your room... on the way to mine... Anyway, I heard the noise and was worried. It sounded very loud and I thought you might have fallen or something. So I put my stuff down and used the key you had given me. Sorry if I crossed a line or anything."
Kendra took another swig from her up and hoped to god that he didn't ask where her room was. What would she say? Oh yhea, my room's right next to yours. Funny right? I just moved in and then you got in an accident. Never knew you were there! Hah, yhea that would work. Not. Kendra scoffed to herself as she sighed slightly. She needed to sleep some more but just talking to him on the phone made her happy.
"Hey Logan, how about we go get you some groceries tomorrow? I'm sure you need some food in your fridge and it'll be good for you to get some outside exposure. I'm sure you aren't totally used to everything but I'm sure it'll help." She smiled as she spoke. Just the thought of going out shopping with him made her happy.

"Ah, okay," Logan replied to her comment about her room. He still was unsure exactly why she was passing his room, but he decided not to ask. Her room must have been somewhere on that floor otherwise she probably wouldn't have been there. But it didn't matter for the time being.
His eyes traveled to his fridge at her comment. "Ah, yes, that's probably a good idea," he said with a slight laugh. "I had to go through and throw out a lot of my food so there's not much left." He gave a slight shrug before laying down on the couch. His head rested on the bottom just below the arm rest and he put his left leg up on the other arm rest while his right leg curled underneath it. "You really are a big help for me."

"I try," she giggled as she wiped her forehead and took another drink from her glass before filling it once more to the brim with the cool water. "I guess I'll plan to take you some time tomorrow then. I'd like to go earlier in the day just because I don't want to deal with all the traffic and stuff. Plus, less people in the store then the better for you right?"
Why was she so freaking thirsty? She strolled back to her couch and plopped down on the cushion before wrapping herself back up in her blanket.
"I'm happy I can be of some help."

"Alright, well I'll see you tomorrow then. Go get some sleep, alright? Good night," he said, stiffing a yawn in his throat. He was exhausted, which he apparently didn't realize earlier.
-------------TIME JUMP----------------
Logan had woken up later than he used to. After living in the hospital for over a month, his sleep patterns had gotten all messed up. He got up around ten o'clock, which was quite late for him. He struggled to get ready and dressed and then searched for something to eat. But there was nothing to be found. All of his bread was moldy so no toast. His milk had gone sour so no cereal. And his eggs had gone bad so no eggs. Grumbling to himself, he decided just not to eat. Maybe he could buy something at the store to snack on.
His phone began ringing when he was in his room. He had placed it on the counter in the kitchen so he had to hobble as fast as he could to get to it in time. He thought perhaps it was Kendra calling to see if he was ready but when he looked at the screen he saw 'Mother' on it. A sudden lump formed in his throat as he answered.
"Hello?" he said, his voice cracking.
"Logan! You finally answered!" came the voice from the other end. "Honey, I've been calling you for a week and you haven't answered."
"Yeah, I know," Logan replied, leaning on the counter. He was almost out of breath and was panting slightly. "I've been busy."
"Where you just running?" his mother asked. "You sound out of breath."
"Um...yeah. I left my phone in the other room so I had to run to come get it." It wasn't really a lie....really.
"Oh," she replied. "Well, I wanted to know if you could drop by for dinner tonight or tomorrow. Your brother has been over all week and I wanted the family to be all together. Oh, there he is now. Say hello to your brother Matthew!"
"Hello brother," came a male voice in the background.
Logan cringed.
"Good boy. Now, can you come over?"
"Um...sorry...I...I don't think I can," Logan replied slowly. "I'm really busy with...school....stuff. Essays, tests, you know. Busy busy."
"Oh Logan," his mother whined. "We're hardly ever all together as a family. Can't you take a few hours from your life?"
"Um, sorry mom, I can't," he said, looking over at the wall. "Sorry, gotta go. Talk to you later mom."
He hung up his phone before she could say anything. He stared up at the wall and sucked in a quick breath and let it out slowly. No one could create stress in him quite like his mother.

.: Maybe he could be a tad depressed by his mother and thats when she says she likes it better when he's happy and cute. That would work. And she would say it after they returned home. :.
Kendra blinked as the day's light streamed through her half-open shades. She lied there for a moment more staring out into the sky before slowly opening her eyes all the way open. She pushed herself up on one hand and used the other to rub the sleep from her eyes. She had fallen asleep on the couch again. That wasn't good. She really needed to stop doing that. Her hair was a mess and her breath was horrid. She reached out for her phone and pressed the button on the side. The screen lit up and the time was displayed on the screen. It was almost past noon.
Her whole body jumped into action as she lept from the couch and raced to the bathroom. She hopped into the shower and was out within ten minutes. Blow drying her hair took a tad longer but she made it so she "straightened" her hair at the same time so wouldn't have to preen it like she usually did. Next was her teeth, her make up, cleaning her lip ring.
She looked at herself in the mirror. The piercings, the tattoo bellow her eye. She was such a rebel, she thought. At least, that's what everyone thought. No one really knew the reason's why she had these things done to her. Why she had put herself through such pain. It was probably better that way.
She went to her room and found fresh clothes to wear and got dressed. Chain necklaces hung from her neck, a floppy hat rested on her head, and shiny stars hung from her ears. A fashionable top covered her but showed off her chest, its faint plaid design complementing the dark blue jeans she wore. She slipped on a pair of fingerless arm warmers and boots before picking up her phone and dialing Logan's number.
She waited as the phone rang in her ear, the response soon coming.
