"Cygnus....Vismund Cygnus" -- The Mars Volta
Concert review, if anyone cares:
I went to see
Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton on January 7th at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia. The concert was in the santuary so the audience was seated in actual church pews. Definately one of the coolest venues I've been to; it was very cute. The show was general admission so everyone chose their own pews. My friends and I got great seats, about 7 rows from the stage, right by an aisle so we didn't have to look above people's heads to see the stage.
So anyway, the
Tall Firs opened for her; they were pretty good, very chill. The style of music kind of reminded me of Zero 7. The guys seemed a bit drugged out, but they were funny. We talked to the drummer a little while the stage was being set for Emily. He was quite nice, he even gave my dorky friends high-fives.
xp Finally Emily came on and played her entire album (
Knives Don't Have Your Back) in order. In spite of the fact that she was a bit tipsy, she was absolutely wonderful. She played the piano and sang as well, if not better than she does on the CD. In between songs, she chatted with the audience about the fact that her mother was raised in Philadelphia, the warm winter, and other random topics. Yeah... it was cool.
While she played, clips from a black and white independant film called
The Saddest Music in the World were projected on a screen behind her. The director, Guy Maddin, had apparently given her permission to play it during her shows. It brought a whole different aspect to the concert, which I really liked.
After the show, Emily stayed to sign autographs, take pictures and just generally hang out with anyone who chose to stay. I got the shirt I'd bought signed and Danielle and I both got bad quality pictures with her using the cameras on our phones. I'd heard a rumor that she's a b***h, but I completely disagree. She was very nice to my friends and I; we thuroughly enjoyed our brief chat with her.
