Again Devadas thought that he heard the sounds of a struggle. It was very faint, so he figured it had to be a wild animal hunting for food or something. It didn't really sound like anything metal was involved, so there was no guarantee that it was anything human. At least this time Devadas had managed to hear it a bit clearer. He had a general idea of what direction they were in. It was a start, but it wasn't obvious that he was right. He would have to meet them later once he was done his training and they were done doing whatever it was that they were doing. Depending on how competent they all were, that could be really close or hours away. It all depended on skill, and a lot of luck.

Devadas could almost make out something that sounded human, but before he could the tile he was using to balance on slipped and Devadas had to put out his left hand to avoid falling head first into the roof. Falling through someone's roof wasn't a good way to become familiar with the village. Property damage was generally a bad way to make friends. Lifting his right hand, Devadas once again balanced himself on his left hand and tried to hear what the people in the distance were doing. He figured trying to hear how many people were out there was a good way to progress his training.

As Devadas strained his ears, he managed to make out what sounded like two or three people. It was possible that it was just one person or maybe more than four that were quieter, but he could guess in confidence that there were at least three. Devadas didn't know anything else about them; his ears weren't nearly that good. Turning his attention away from whatever was in the distance, he tried to listen to the pace of breath coming from the ninja below him. Maybe that would be easier than hearing something so far away. Rhythmic as breathing was supposed to me, it didn't mean one could hear something that was normally filtered out by human ears.

Devadas relaxed for a few minutes as he listened to the rhythm that the man's breathing made. It was almost musical in a strange sense. Who knew that sound was such a wondrous thing? Granted he was a part of a village that took pride in using sound as a weapon so it wasn't too crazy. Nonetheless it gave him a certain sense of accomplishment to be able to appreciate such a simple sound. Harmony was the basis of all things, and being able to hear the harmony in something as ordinary as breathing was a feat within itself. Perhaps if he tried he could hear something even quieter? There were plenty of bugs and animals in the forest after all.

Switching what he was listening too wasn't as easy as Devadas thought it would be. Just pinning down a single creature was about as easy as guessing where a needle was in a haystack or something. At least this time he didn't lose his handholds and fall or something like that. Devadas wondered if all the blood was beginning to rush to his head or something from doing a handstand in the middle of training. As long as he didn't pass out or get brain damage he would be fine. Devadas just needed listen to something else that was going on around him. How hard could that be?

Devadas listened to the sounds of a bird feeding its young, however odd it seemed to be. There was no use in being disgusted with anything that happened, since it was all natural anyway. He could hear the young ones almost begging for food, being as helpless as they were. Devadas remembered a time when he too was like them, helpless and afraid of the world around him. But since he had been taken in by the only home he had ever known that had ceased to be the case. After setting out on his own he had felt the loneliness set in again, but the village hidden in the sound had changed that. Or so he thought; it wasn't like Devadas had made any friends since coming here. Most people still considered him an outsider because of how he dressed and how he trained in such unusual ways. It was just something Devadas would have to work past.

Apparently his silent anger disrupted his meditation and he slipped off where he was standing. Deftly he flipped onto his feet and walked up to the top of the roof. Reluctantly he did another one armed handstand using his right hand. Devadas took a few deep breaths before he relaxed himself again. His anger had distracted him too much. Such emotions were supposed to be put to the back, seeing as they only served to disrupt his progress. Control over one's emotions is what separated him from a common beast. Falling into such basic habits was beneath a civilized person, much less a monk who was always supposed to be in control of his emotions. It was definitely something to think on later.

It appeared Devadas hadn't come to terms with his anger. It was a constant companion, however unpleasant it was to be around. He tried to shove it to the back of his mind. Meditation was about getting rid of these feelings and just focusing on the void. He was here to improve his hearing, as hard as that was to do. Devadas tried to focus on what was around him. As he closed his eyes again he tried to pick up the subtle sounds that surrounded the dojo. There was plenty going on around him, even if his ears normally filtered it out so his brain didn't overload. The trick seemed to be making his brain choose what it wanted to hear. It may have been an over-simplified way of going about training, but getting bogged down with useless details wasn't a good plan either.

Finally putting his anger aside, Devadas was able to focus on the subtle sound of a squirrel running up a tree a few meters away. It was a subtle yet slightly annoying sound, which made Devadas understand why his brain had canceled it out in the first place. One day though it may be an enemy and not a squirrel he had to hear and he would be ready. Or at least Devadas hoped he would be. It was hard to be ready for the future since it was so unpredictable. You couldn't predict when you were going to die, but having a futile outlook on life was even worse. The idea alone was the only think keeping Devadas alive, since other than his religious service he had no goal in life.

Devadas listened to the squirrel for a few more minutes as he silently contemplated his purpose in life. He had run this scenario in his head every day and night for as long as he could remember. Between his religious devotion and his dedication to Oto he didn't have much in his life. Being non-violent he wasn't valued to highly compared to the other ninjas, and being as strange as he was, Devadas wasn't considered someone to hang around with. It was almost as if he had some contagious disease or something that made people want to leave him alone. Not that he minded too much, he just wished that he wasn't always surrounded by people who didn't understand his obligations.

Unfortunately Devadas was unable to continue his successful streak. The squirrel he had been watching decided to attack him randomly. He managed to throw the creature off the roof, and at least he seemed rid of it. The unprecedented assault aside, Devadas decided to go back and finish his training. He tried to listen for anything else around him, and hopefully nothing that would attack him for doing so. The world was filled with many wondrous things, not just annoying bloodthirsty flying rodents. With nothing else to do, he went back to his meditation. No point in just sitting around and doing nothing. Life was too short to waste.

2+5 = 7 FAIL

As hard as he tried, Devadas couldn't manage to slip into deep meditation again. Since that blasted squirrel had attacked him Devadas had been on full alert. He tried his best to relax himself, and somehow slip into meditation. It was a simple thing to say you could meditate; it was another thing entirely to do it at will with all the dangers of the world around you. On top of that he was standing on one hand on the roof of a dojo, as if could make it any more stressful. Maybe next time he'd have someone throw kunais at him or something to give it the element of danger. He had almost forgotten that the point of this exercise was to improve his hearing. Relaxing, Devadas tried to pick out anything that caught his attention.

Oddly enough Devadas didn't hear anything externally at first. He could hear some kind of loud thumping coming from somewhere nearby, but he couldn't isolate it to determine just what it was. After a minute he discovered that he had been listening to the sound of his own heart beating in his chest. Devadas hadn't ever stopped to listen to the sound of his heart beating before, at least not like this. He let himself be taken in by the sound of it, allowing it's rhythm to relax him further. Perhaps it would let him hear something even better, although it was something that Devadas greatly doubted.

As he relaxed further he soon woke up and found that he had fallen asleep while standing on one hand. At lease no one had messed with him or anything. That would have been unforgivable to Devadas' pride as a ninja. Shaking off his feelings of shame he tried meditating again. Devadas tried to figure out what was around him again. He had drastically underestimated the difficulty of seeing without using his eyes. Sure he could pick out individual sounds if he focused, but he wanted to become so good at it that he could do it without thinking. Such conditioning was the ultimate expression of devotion to his god and Oto. There was no greater glory than to be recognized by both sides in Devadas' mind.

For a second everything seemed clear to Devadas. His hearing became so acute that he could have sworn that he heard a fly's wings beat an inch away from his face. Then the world spun and everything returned to normal. Apparently it was really hard to hold that kind of sensory overload for long periods of time. But if you could develop a technique around it, nothing would be out of your reach... It was something to contemplate at a later time. For now Devadas had to figure out what to train yet again. The interruptions between different training regiments were becoming more and more annoying. He seemed to be wasting a good deal of time when he didn't know what to do.
