Trying to listen at the door
___________________

Every hair on Indira's body felt like it was standing on end, as she pushed through the water fall. She was a little surprised that Cinder had followed her. The doe obviously knew what was at risk. Perhaps some of these Homewood dwellers hadn't lost sight of what was important.

Her ears lay flat against her neck as she was confronted with the slick drippy rock wall and the strange metal door. A thing of the others, in Homewood? Repulsive. The myriad of chains and pulleys and rust extended outwards. She had no clear way of operating them. Her lip curled as she took in all the rat prints. Pieces in her mind were coming together, and they were not painting a very flattering picture.

She crept forward, and pressed an ear to the metal door, hoping to hear anything happening beyond it. Time was of the essence, but she was quite sure she couldn't just batter this door down. Metal was almost certainly stronger than her hooves.

Owlheart stared, she couldn't help it, at the Big Rat when it emerged, it was an...adept? She blinked a few times, before realising she was being rude and she looked away to Nereida, who's gift it accepted. Phew, that was good, hopefully the Big Rat hadn't been offended by her offering.

"Oh yes, yes please we would love to know about our friends" she held herself back from asking, though she wanted to, she had to clench her teeth against more questions that wanted to be asked.

ooooh Nereida was smart, don't give up all the goods before they got the information they needed, oh that was clever, but she didn't miss the other Doe's look and she stepped forwards softly, lightly, so not to spook either the sentry or the Big Rat, she also eyed her faery friends in the tree, something unspoken passing between her and Hunts by Night, he would swoop if she needed him, he was a good friend. No.. she wouldn't let these dire rats take more than what was fair, She'd hate to see Nereida lost more of her lovely mane than was absolutely necessary. She gave the other does an almost invisible nod, she'd be ready to back them both up if needed.

following faery
sorry for short reply, don’t have much time.

Sweetpea was almost tempted by the tracks, though they were confusing. She didn’t think they ought to follow any rats, but it was hard to resist any form of clue.

Thankfully, a faery interrupted her indecision. “Yeah! Absolutely, we’re with you!” She ran off following it beside Havoc.

Kevin was following the small hand-like prints of the dire rat, his head low to the ground. It had taken him away from the river and into the bushes. Specterdust was about to follow her sidekick into the bushes too, but the sounds of flapping got her attention and she backed up and turned. A faery came flying up the river from the direction she was originally headed. It wasn’t one she recalled seeing with any noul in particular when they first started on this journey. However, its message made it clear that it was part of the group. So it was Indira and another noul that had gone this way. Wait...who was Indira? Specterdust realized she didn’t know everyone’s names. Well that wasn’t helpful and the faery was already long gone, probably looking for the rest of the group.

Specterdust turned back towards the dire rat prints that raced away from the predator prints. What if this creature needed her help too? But what did this Indira find? Glancing the direction the faery had flown, Specterdust spotted Dryxel and the spotty doe and the….predator? They brought it with them? Hmmm, the faery had passed them, probably told them the same thing but they were already working this way. It was time to regroup, they’ve been spread out thin and that was just as dangerous.

“Come, Kevin! A fellow noul calls for aid!” Specterdust called and then began to pronk off down the river bank towards Indira. Kevin’s head popped up and he raced back towards the river and then ran after the tiny grey doe.

Inspecting the pulley system

She could barely hear herself think, this side of the waterfall, but at least they weren't dead. This was not quite the bloody battle Cinder had unhappily imagined as they'd come charging in, and she felt a little relief to know that they'd have a second to think and plan.

Hopefully wait for reinforcements.

"I'm guessing whatever you saw is behind this door?" She said to Indira, raising her eyes to take in the structure before them. "What a place to hide an entrance. Seems a little seedy to me."

She made her way closer to the chains and pulleys protruding from the door, eyeing them carefully, looking for some clues. It seemed to be the way in, but she didn't particularly like the idea of the two of them bursting into a fortified hideout on their own.

follow the faery
___________________

It was pretty easy to follow the tracks, thankfully, though Cattleya's ears kept flicking about. She felt indecisive: could the rest of the beasts be just around the corner somewhere?

The tracks didn't show it, but she couldn't help but wonder.

She spotted the small grey adept again across the river as she walked, and she'd have called out - it was a bad idea to be alone right now, no matter how good a fighter she may have been - except that a faery rushed past just then. It was obvious where it was headed, and Cattleya turned to Dryxel with some concern. "I'm going to find Indira, then - I think joining up is important." She wasn't sure what to do about the beast, but it clearly couldn't run right now.

Heading Left

Havoc and Sweetpea head left down the river, following the course of the faery as it zooms as quickly as its tiny wings will allow. As they race, they catch a glimpse of Specterdust and Kevin examining something on the far river bank, before she turns tail with her familiar and takes off down the river.

It appears to be the footprint of a predator, with a few stray blue and white hairs scattered inside it. Around it are a collection of smaller dire rat prints, leading into the foliage.

Quote:
Do you continue down the river after the faery?

OR

Follow the footprints into the bushes?

The Big Rat

The sentry wastes no time, grasping a thick lock of Nereida’s beautiful hair and bringing it to its mouth. It bites and gnaws until the hair is cut loose, then it turns away without a word to tie the hair to one of the many ornaments dangling from the branches.

The Big Rat watches with a pleased expression. Once the hair is properly secured, he turns to Nereida, Owlheart, and Russet Fawn.

“Bone Crushers have your noul friends,” he says, nodding to himself. “Bone Crushers with many big teeth. Big Rat saw them and sent out little rats to investigate. Big Rat doesn’t want to get eaten like those nasty nouls. So Big Rat made a deal.

“Big Rat knows where all your friends are, yes he does. Big Rat showed them the secret place, so Bone Crushers won’t munch and crunch on Big Rat or little rats.

“You want to go to secret place?” The Big Rat grasps the gear around his neck. “Big Rat will tell you. But Big Rat wants something else first!”

Quote:
Offer the Big Rat something else in exchange for more information with a roll of 2d6 + CHARM

OR

Attempt to take the gear from him by being quick and strong with 2d6 + BODY.

But beware! If any of you try to steal the gear, he won’t be able to be charmed!

The Waterfall

Indira presses her ear to the door and although it’s faint and drowned by the roar of the water, she can make out voices! Most of them are gruff, growling noises. Snarls and snaps as something tussles. Someone else is barking orders but it’s impossible to make out the words.

And then, a little closer to the door, someone shouts: “Please just let us go!”

Cinder inspects the door. The chains and pulleys are quite rusted and have left an impression of black and brown against the door itself… but it seems like there’s one part missing. There’s a space for a small gear, and the dark impression of one on the cave wall where it might belong.

Specterdust arrives at the lake, with Lady Cattleya following shortly behind her with the injured beast in tow.

“It smells like meat here,” says the beast, lifting her nose to scent the air. “Meat and rats. We must be very close.”

At the far side of the lake is a waterfall, and this is where the faery heads, fluttering nervously as he points.

“They went in here,” he says.

Charming the "Big" Rat

___________________

As the rat brutalized her long silken mane Nereida never made a sound. Deep within she was silently accepting this had to be done. as the mane was taken and added to the other decorations her eyes never left the "Big Rat". He divulged information as promised to leave her astounded that this creature was the reason the "resurrected creatures" or "Bone Crushers" as he spoke of them had a secure hiding place. She also started thinking back to her magic that had whispered about the boulders and roots.

That's where they were! The beasts and missing nouls!

Curiously her vision locked directly on that gear around his neck. The "Others" created metal contraptions that were aided by these accessories such as his necklace he had crudely designed. Silently, she wanted to head off to the waterfall but, that gear was the main factor, she was positive.

As the "Big Rat" spoke of anything thing he wanted she narrowed her eyes slightly. This Big Rat wanted to live large getting anything he wanted. She pondered what Th to do since the few items in her satchel along with the water vials were more for her own comfort in this horrible game of cat and mouse. They needed that gear but she wasn't one for fighting, the only thing she could offer was again the other lock of hair as promised. Reminding herself it would always grow back she spoke.

"You have given us valuable information. Please, I'll offer another lock of my mane should you tell us how to enter that "Secret Place" and even add in my freshwater from the heart of Homewood".

He had said he wanted something else so she was sincerely hoping Russet Fawn and Owlheart would have something he was truly desiring right now. In truth she was wary about losing more mane but, if it was to save the captured nouls, so be it.

Deal for the Big Rat!

___________________

It seemed that the Big Rat was pleased with the trade with Nereida. The information was something new. 'Bone Crushers' that is what he had called them. Frowning, she didn't like the idea of the rat calling the Nouls, nasty... If that is what he was implying about her kind. Shaking her head a new trade was to be offered. For the gear around his neck and to be lead to this 'safe' place. Looking to the others she had to think.

"My offer still stands. One use of my magic. From making something grow to reviving something that might be from your homeland."

While the idea of just taking the gear had crossed her mind, but she wasn't that kind of Noul. She glanced back at Talltale whom was watching the Rat with narrowed eyes. He hadn't really dealt with them before, but he felt that this one was going to want something from all of them by the end of all this.

She watched carefully as the Sentry grabbed a lock, frowning a little because she thought it had been rather a large chunk of poor Nereida's mane that it had taken, perhaps more than a fair share.

She listened and her ears drew back at 'nasty nouls' "Not all of us are nasty Mr Big Rat" she blurted out, unable to help herself, she was among the Nouls in Homewood that was willing to give dire rats the benefit of the doubt and treat them as friends, even equals instead of enemies.

Of course he wanted more, this nest clearly hadn't decorated itself. "I still have nothing but a promise of a favour, either now or in the future, you need only send word, It's not a pretty thing, or something you can touch but my word is good, i have never gone back on my word before and i don't intend to do such now" She wished she had something tangible to offer but perhaps there was something only she could do, that the Big Rat would need help with someday.

Trying to make a plan
___________________

It was hard to hear much of anything, but what she could make out chilled her to her core. The nouls they were looking for were captives, behind the other made door.

The whites of her eyes were visible as she turned to Cinder, and nodded. Her voice was the lowest whisper possible. "They're back there. They need help." She pressed her eyes shut. "I can hear someone begging." The only good news was that they were still alive.

Her eyes drifted back to the metal door, covered in rat prints. Hands were something she just didn't have. How at the rats managed to shift the metal? The pulleys and gears were beyond her. "I think we need the others." How on Vykeli were they going to get that door open? And where were the others? Surely if anyone had made it to the river, Samhain would have found them by now.

It wrenched her heart to turn away from the metal door, but she did it. Maybe with help they could batter it down if needed. She pushed back through the waterfall, blinking in the bright light. Immediately she was greeted with a sight she wasn't expecting.

There were certainly other noulicorns around the lake, but also a beast. Something she'd never seen before. This was clearly what had murdered and eaten the others. Samhain zipped to her, and Fleet hopped off her rock, also have caught sight of the creature.

Had it taken the others prisoner? Were there more fatalities already? Samhain alighted on her head, and began chittering right away. "Brought them for you, Indira. They had the monster with them, Indira."

Well, that answered that. She strode towards Specterdust and Lady Cattleya, covering the ground between them as quickly as possible. "We've found where they have taken the noulicorns from the resurrection ceremony. But the way is blocked by some other built door of metal. It's all covered in rat prints."

Her eyes narrowed as she looked at the hulking beast. A pure, unbridled hatred burnt in her heart as she took its form in. It clearly wasn't in the best shape. Her mind spun, trying to make sense of everything. "Murderer, if we bring you to the door, will they let you in? If you tell them you have more prisoners?"

Perhaps this had been the plan of the other noulicorns, why they had brought this ... thing ... with them, instead of dispatching it for its crimes.

Continuing to the follow the faery

Sweetpea chased after the faery, narrowly missing low hanging branches and springy saplings that the faery easily swooped over. She slows slightly, taking in the prints as they passed them.

There were no nouls among them, but the fact that they went off into the bushes instead of the direction the three of them were headed gave her pause. But the faery said others needed help, and she couldn't let herself be distracted by some rat prints and more predator prints. She had to do what she could for other nouls.

She picked up speed again, catching back up the faery. She looked over to Havoc. "I hope we get to them soon. I'm scared something's going to happen."

Havoc picked up the pace to keep up with the doe that was speeding after the faery. He tried not to think about his hurt hind leg, he could manage. It just twinged a little to remind him how stupid and dangerous the beasties were. Too intent on keeping up with Sweetpea, and helping other damsels in distress, he dodn't even see the other markings in the dirt. No matter, he had things to do! What if that beast the others took with them had eaten them?

"Right with you! We'll help them!" Havoc answered Sweetpea as he dodged and weaved through the underbrush, letting her know he was there for back up. BUT NOT SCARED. Ok a little scared maybe.

Looking for a gear

Cinder's frown deepened as she inspected the pulley system. Old. Rusty. Possibly not functional... As her gaze traveled up the system, she paused, noticing a dark impression in the wall, a slot for a gear.

"There's a piece missing," she said out loud, turning to Indira.

She did a quick sweep of the area before her, trying to spot any loose pieces that may have fallen to the ground.

Having done that, she turned, with a sigh, and exited the waterfall behind Indira. Yes... this wasn't a task for just two.

The moment she spotted Specterdust and Cattleya, she also saw this hulking predator behind them and balked. "Oh god," she said. "What is that."

Specterdust pronked into view of the waterfall and paused. She could hear the sounds of the beast behind her, lumbering this way as well. She glanced back to see the spotty doe leading it. Specterdust glared at the beast as it smelled the air and called them meat. The faery flew by pointing towards the waterfall and saying they had gone there. They? So both noulicorns then. Specterdust continued forward. One thing she hadn’t addressed yet was that she looked filthy. Other than mud, blood from the beast sullied her fur and horn but it was beginning to dry and darken.

Kevin hopped up on a rock for a vantage point and then eyed the tiny grey doe.

“You look like a mess,” he stated.

“Well thank you for that observation. You would too if you’d helped-” Specterdust snorted at him.

Specterdust was cut short by a dark noul with yellow adept markings, racing towards them from the waterfall. Specterdust looked taken aback for a moment as the noul wasted no time talking to them. So there was a metal door constructed by the Others behind the waterfall. The noulicorns were behind it. What an odd thing to build behind a waterfall.

“Wow, you’re intense. You must be Indira then,” Specterdust suddenly said. “As the unknown faery flew by shouting that Indira found something, I was all ‘We must go help’ but then I was all, ‘I don’t know that faery or who Indira is. Perhaps she’s one of the other nouls in the party, I don’t know everyone’s names. We should have at least exchanged names. Well she found something and needs help so let us go.’ Now I see it is you who is Indira and I’m glad that I was correct. So here we are to help. I’m Specterdust, just so you know seeing as we didn’t exchange even basic pleasantries before we all split up. As for that thing, we beat it up but Dryxel and Spotty doe decided to interrogate it. I didn’t expect them to bring it with them as I had left them to it to go find the rest of the party. I’m pretty sure there are more of these guys out there. They’re friggin huge.”

Kevin made a face that pretty much said ‘please stop talking’ at Specterdust. But Specterdust had a point, the beasts were huge, of course she was the smallest party member.
