Davey had remained quiet through the meeting. The new recruits earned a careful once-over as Davey evaluated their potential as best he could. It was good to know that their numbers were slowly increasing, as overrun by monsters as they had been in the recent mission. Still, was it too much to hope for that there would be more competent soldiers and less-

"YAY LIFE!"

- of that? Davey's shoulders slumped. He noticed a few of the others pretending not to know Before, and Caelius himself calling the former Beta out.

"This is why we can't have nice things," he muttered to himself.

Most of the Hunters were paired up and led off to whatever mission Caelius had planned. Several names were absent. Davey frowned. It mostly disappeared when Caelius said he had something planned for the others who would remain with him. Davey just hoped they weren't being pawned off on Dr H again.

When it seemed like the 'away' team were mostly settled, Davey turned to Caelius. "What now, boss?"

Ha, and you thought you could get away from being social.

Leon didn't bother to reply to the annoying vice in his head as he focused on the more important things. Like fixing the headset/mask on properly before Cael decided to ream him for putting it on incorrectly. And figuring out how to deal with his equally as stoic partner, and surviving. It just had to be a body hunt in a desert like climate. Was it the bodies of fellow trainees, or golems or even a chance of the remains of the enemy? It was hard to tell once the mask slipped on and everything was bathed in unnatural colors.

He was sure that Harrison was more pink than red and orange. "Could be better, but I won't let it interfere with our task." he answered abruptly back and stared at the bloke that was really eyeing him down. he rather hoped that pink wasn't a sign for something.

"Well, if this little coalition we have going to be fun?" he said lamely.

HA, and I can't even eat candied popcorn, this sucks.

Wait. What? But she had said the other way around! Pouting, Candace sighed and stopped what she was doing. Fine, fine. If she insisted. "Kat, huh? Sure. But I'm just Candace, okay? Candy is off limits." Something she would need to tell Jerry. Candace put the mask on, lowering her headphones to hang around her neck until it was properly adjusted before adding on the ear piece. Okay...now...eh, she'd leave her headphones down. She didn't want to look like she was ignoring her partner when she wasn't trying to. This girl seemed alright.

When asked if she'd been on one of these before she chuckled and shook her head. "I've been on a couple missions but not quite one of this nature. Our first one was another test where Caelius gave us a gun and told us not to die, then left us to fend for ourselves. And then after that we were sent to the world of Halloween while they were having this festival thing to collect what they call minipets, and then most recently like two weeks ago even we were at a haunted house..." Candace paused a moment, frowning. "That one was...special. I haven't been on one like this though. Recovering..survivors." She frowned, shaking her head and sighing.

"Nervous? Don't worry. Stick close to me, 'kay?"

"Obviously we are being set aside for something very important," Jerry drew in a sharp breath as he glanced to the crowd of new faces all hovering close.

And Davey.

His face reddened, rubbing the back of his head. Well... hopefully the one-armed hunter wouldn't have... too many hard feelings about the words they had exchanged in the tent during the last mission... he really hadn't been feeling himself. The pink corset had probably attributed to his uncharacteristic grumpiness. A thousand apologies would be needed later but for now...

"I suppose we should, er, help ourselves to the masks anyway just in case?" He turned to the Hatchlings with an encouraging smile. It would at least give them something to do while waiting further orders, and moved to help himself to one as well.

Petra waited silently until she heard her name, remaining unmoved from where she sat with the rest of the phoenixes until Caelius stood, eyes focused on the Death hunter. There may have been the slightest flicker of relief in her eyes, most certainly due to not having to work directly with their irrefutably temperamental, but after a moment it was gone, easily dismissed as a trick of the light. The Phoenixes were professional -- they did what they were told, silently, efficiently, ruthlessly, no questions asked. They certainly didn't avoid certain abusive staff members. With the sudden cacophony of scraping chairs, the moon-hunter-in-training stood along with the rest of the assembled group, her eyes briefly settling on Madison, Jerry and Jordan with a short nod. They knew where to find her, should there be any trouble. A shout of her name, and she would be there, and she had no doubt they would do the same for her.

It was only after they had all followed Caelius to the training grounds and had each stepped through the transporter into the desert that she finally separated herself completely from the group, her dark blue eyes lifting to scan the surrounding area for her partner. If she remembered correctly, the girl had been wearing a green scarf -- briefly Petra recalled the girl's introduction, naming herself in the subcategory 'Death.' Perhaps she was lingering with some of the other death hunters. Careful to avoid the sight of the rows of black bags, she picked up two pairs of sets and masks, catching sight of Minerva just as she was beginning to slide them on. Closing the distance between them in a few short strides, she offered them to the other with her traditional blank look.

"I see. That sounds like something rather handy for some situations." He listened and nodded when she said something he thought might be easy was going to be tough.

Placing on the gear and following the example of leaving the eye wear on his head for now he seemed attentive almost wishing he had a notepad to take notes.

<I can try to help you remember all that, but yup calling me out might be a good idea.> Pookie chimed in.

Aleister frowned when he glanced towards the body bags. "So they are sort of like a solar battery? Only without the batteries." He asked curiously, pausing at rolling with the punches.

"Do we normally get some sort of training before a mission or is it always on the fly like this?" He was full of questions and she seemed much easier to talk to than Caelius.

Way to go Milton. Get yourself on death row via Caelius. Nice knowing you.

"Nice to um.. formerly meet you Deryk." He smiled a bit, but not much. The portal got a sigh of resignation. Couldn't they take a plane or boat or something? Nope, had to be magic. Not much to do about it, (it was probably less expensive and motion sickness inducing). Stepping through he though it might be a forest, or a cave entrance, not...a desert. Much less a loud one at that. "The portals I am going place a safe bet on 'we won't know for a long a** while'." Groaning as he already felt sand getting into places sand shouldn't be, (his poor boots), he was a bit presently surprised to see a moon hunter. Finally some one from his own division.

Talk about fast travel though, to bad the hunters couldn't commercialize it or something. Looking at Deryk, Marcus shrugged. "Camels spit. And no. Betting it's not a place we'll see often but you never can te-." He shut his mouth at the sight of what he could only assume to be body bags. This was- the ******** kind of a mission did you bring them on Caelius? What the huntress was saying....
Grabbing the headset and Mask he put them on..and frowned. "Well, this will make things interesting for sure. " His vision was so ********. Probably for the better.

He had to ask the moon hunter though. "What are the chances we will even find survivors and not...." He glanced over at the tent. "Well what are our chances?"

Cass looked to the Moon Hunter as she corrected herself, telling them to instead put on the mask then the headset, making a small face, but leaving her gear as it was. She'd let them fuss it before she went out if they were going to be like that.

"Kind of. They're fueled by the substance that monsters are made out of it, so coming in contact with those creatures will allow them to 'steal' energy to power up." She really wished she could draw a diagram for this explanation she was giving at the moment.

"We did some training as a run down to what I'm explaining to you now with Aria once. But when we woke up? We were immediately thrown into a zombie-filled town with some bandages, a handful of guns, and told to have at it. It was..... I really would have been dead if I didn't have other people watching out for me at that point in time. It was much more real than the trials were."

She couldn't help but rub her head a bit at the thought. Yeah, she'd blown her head off at the trials and come back from that. "If we both come back from this, I'll give you a run down with a sparring match or something.

Basically, your weapon can take FEAR - the substance the monsters and other creepers of the night are made of - and turn it into a larger attack if you hit them enough times - Three is what I've been told, so we'll run with that. Your weapon can also take that FEAR and turn it into a barrier for you. That will keep you safe from fatal attacks for a certain length of time. But once that barrier drops, your done." She thought for a moment longer, eyes drifting up towards her left temple.

<>

You've covered charged attacks, barriers, and FEAR. That's important. Give him time to digest.
She nodded.

"I can give you another run-over of this stuff after we're done with everything though."

Jordan! Her heart lit up slightly; she'd been trembling and trying to hide her face the moment she saw Petra walk in, but it was as if the gods (or at least the-god-that-was-Caelius), despite what she had heard about them, had decided to be benevolent.

Waiting for most of the crowd to clear, she went straight to him first.

"Sup, Boss!" It was like old times, almost. "Counting on you to teach me the ropes! Masks first, right?"

Vanessa acknowledged the other woman's wave and gave it a slight nod. She didn't know the other's name yet, but if it was not offered perhaps she didn't want it to be known just yet. She did notice that this woman also had a red cross on her arm, and Vanessa studied it, mentally weighing the odds of how quickly her group would die during this mission, simply because medics were enemy-firing-magnets. (Some might say Vanessa was being a little bias for this assumption, but she'd been there. She knew that medics went first. She'd faced that horror.)

Despite the unfortunate odds that the medics had, Vanessa found she was mentally vowing to protect whatever medics were in her group. She glanced at Ryan, then the unknown woman, remembering how she had been more or less defenseless as the only medic in the Epsilon group, and how quickly she'd fallen since she could not protect herself from practically the entire enemy team. No, she would make sure that her medics were safe, so they wouldn't have to suffer as she had.

She gave Eva a nod too, happy to see the other girl and noting her good question. She nodded to those around her and said, "It will be a pleasure, hopefully, to work with you all." Vanessa then took a moment to put on her mask, doing as requested and slipping the earphones on only after she had gotten the actual mask in place.

She glanced over to Jerry, noting how strange everything looked in different lens. She gave a nod, then spoke, as if to experiment if her voice would be heard correctly or not through the mask. "You're...Jerry, correct? You're the one with the bazooka?" It would always be good to know which Hunter went to which weapon, and she might have to talk with him later about how bazookas (and most likely Tesla Cannons) really worked.

It was true. Camels did spit. That would be highly unpleasant to deal with. Not to mention there were a lot of hunters to get camels for. Oh well. Fantasy gone. Then, hearing Marcus's question to who he thought was the moon hunter (he was standing where he last saw the guy so it was a decent guess), he turned and had to wonder the same thing.

This also brought on the question of what happened here that would call for the term 'survivors'. Something big and disastrous must have occurred to a previous team.

Eva grinned at Jerry's suggestion, giving the man a casual salute. He may have just been another trainee like the rest of them, but he was a more experienced one, and that counted for something. "Yes sir!" She chirped, and then went to retrieve a headset and mask for herself, just in case they did need it.

When she returned, she realized that there was another hunter in their midst. Wanting to be friendly, she moved over towards Davey with the intention of introducing herself--after all, his name was the only one among their small group that she didn't know, and it was probably the same for the other new trainees. Since she carried her mask and headset in her right hand, she raised her left hand out to shake. "Hi--"

--Wrong arm. Chara suddenly interrupted, her voice sharp. Eva froze, cocking her head to the side.

What are you talking about? I know you usually shake with your right, but I really don't think that's such a big deal right now--oooh, s**t.

She only realized her mistake when her gaze swept over Davey once more, taking in the missing limb. She hastily transferred the headset and mask into her left hand, and then held up her newly-freed right hand in its place. "E-er...hi! I'm Evie. And you are?" A pause, and then she sheepishly added, "...Really, really sorry."

Davey eyed the left hand the new girl offered him. He wasn't sure what she expected him to do with it... but she realised her mistake soon enough and swapped for a hand he could actually shake.

Her fumble wasn't as bad as some others had been (Before and Jerry still topped the list). Accepting the hand, he gave a brief shake. "Davey," he introduced himself. His eyebrows raised a small way at Evie's apology. She'd handled it fairly well. "It's hardly your fault. At least you noticed. Or was that...?" Hand freed, he tapped at his temple to indicate the voices that only each Hunter heard.

Azrael perked up, seeming to realise that weapons were being discussed. ~ Introduce me, idiot! ~

With a quirk of his lips, Davey complied. He reached for his dogtags and suddenly the necklace had one less tag, and a long sword was in his hand. "This is Azrael, who demands to be introduced."

~ Tell her I'll also accept being worshipped. ~

Davey rolled his eyes and failed to pass on the message. He also ignored the resulting huff.

"So when did you wake up?" Davey asked. "Were you part of the island test, or an even newer recruit?"

(( exclaim WARNING: If you are squeamish please do not read this post, and get someone else to summarize it for you PLEASE AND THANK YOU))

"Okay well you four stand there." The Moon Hunter blinked. "I mean five. Six. I.... Just stand there okay." Both hands were in her hair now, as if that would help matters as she seemed to be going through some sort of mild panic attack. "Everyone just stand there and don't move okay."

A few trainees might have obliged, but it was frankly to hear her through the blasts of sand and wind. She tapped her earpiece again, her voice thankfully clear - if not just as strained - through the headset. "All right trainees, we're going to head out in groups. I'll lead the front with all the people who did not get a group." A huge sigh. "Put on your headpiece first and then your masks, and I hope you're all wearing gloves. Follow me." The Moon Hunter then made a huge show of putting on her mask over her headpiece.

She walked slowly at first, a little lost herself with the mask on before she saw the head-sensitive lights leading the way in flickers of orange-yellow. "This way. Save your breath otherwise the weather will get to you, not to mention there still be Fear manifestations nearby." Another huge sigh.

The walked mostly quietly for about ten minutes before the sand seemed to slant downwards, the wind quieting as well. The descent slightly downwards continued, the even black flat sand - as seen through the masks - speckled now with occasional flecks of grey until it seemed almost everything was a strange blemished mix of black-grey, like an uneven rock formation stretching a good twenty feet across. Though it seemed the mask acted as an air filter as well, trainees could not help but smell remnants of a strange odour: something burnt and pungent at the same time, not unlike rotting fruit. The ground underneath morphed to a strange spongy marsh terrain, damp and concentrated.

The Moon Hunter motioned for the trainees to where she was standing. "Try not to step in any liqui -" there was an audible sloshing sound and what seemed like a failed attempt to hold back a choked sob - "just grab whatever you see okay. If you see anything not grey through your masks please tell me otherwise, just grab one of these on the ground, its easier to do it in groups of two. One of you can grab the front of it and the other the back -"she moved her foot and it made a wet sloshing noise again - "they're all rather - heavy - just bring them back to base - I'll be right back."

And then she went running the other direction, back up the pit to even surface, making very obvious gagging noises.

When the trainees bent over to grab the misshapen and vague grey shapes, or at least whatever they could feel, they were most likely surprised to feel that it was rather pliant, if not heavy, easily detaching from the ground. The texture was soft, cold, and somehow familiar, as if grabbing rubber, out of all things, and cloth.

At first, it did not make much sense until the trainees tried to grab onto more than just a piece of the shape, and their fingers traced down the contours of what they were holding on to. A thick end tapering to five thinner pieces. Hard dense material at the ends. It was hard not to recognize it when they had experienced this texture so many times before.

A human hand.

And then, some others grabbed faces, others not so lucky, pressing their hands directly into something cold and semisolid as it ruptured, liquid pouring from the object through their fingers. Others grabbed solid bone, and then fabric and even hair.

They were in a sea of bodies.

OOC

- ??? Has asked the trainees to pick up one of these bodies to bring it back, but the task seems almost impossible now
- Both group members must now quote the other group member and roll a 6-sided dice. IF they both roll the same increment (ie: both odd or both even), they successfully carry the body up 'the pit' to await further instructions. If they roll different they do not succeed. (Ie: it slips, they can't bring themselves to do it, etc etc)

Gale knew where they were going before the Moon Hunter even said anything and he also knew one other thing:

He did not want to be here.

At all.

It was like going back into one of his worst nightmares, Gale's fingers clenching and unclenching subconsciously. He willed himself not to throw up, bile rising thick and fast in his throat, and he unintentionally stopped short. If Otto ran into him from behind, he didn't notice. Instead, Gale bent double, his breathing coming out in short, staccato gasps that were muffled by the mask over his face.

<< Breathe, Gale. >>

That, perhaps, calmed him down a little, if only because Jinhai rarely called him anything other than derogatory nicknames like "moron" and "idiot." But the memories of everything he had just seen and had been trying to ignore for days now all had come rushing back in, quick and fast, and Gale did not want to face them.

You chose to be a Hunter. Face up to it.

I swear if I find B - HIS body...

Face up to it.

That nagging voice in his head was irritating - and, unfortunately for Gale, right. After a few more seconds of attempting to get himself under control, he straightened, his teeth clenched so tightly together it was hard to imagine him actually speaking through them.

"Let's get this over with," he snapped at Otto, and knelt down beside the nearest body.
