Nice job! Are you putting wood handles, or bone, or leaving them like that? What tools did you use---hacksaw and files?

Thanks! I'm actually doing cord wrapped handles on these ones but i do have some g-10 and micarta and some wood for the future. And its lots and lots of time spent with hacksaw's and broken hacksaw blades and a lot of time with files. There is a good bit of variation between each knife but i like them still. I did cheat and use a 2x42 belt grinder to put the bevels on and polish them though but i don't have pics because their off getting heat treated today.

Hey, you earned the right to use that belt grinder, and it would have been hard to get the bevels without it. Be sure and post pictures when they're finished. I think they look great so far!
Are you annealing them yourself, or is someone else doing that?

The steel was supposed to be annealed when i bought it but it wasn't and i don't have the equipment to do that myself so i just worked the steel in its fully hardened state. Being careful to not overheat the steel at any point. I'm really hoping that i can turn this into a career though. So the feedback is tremendously appreciated. I'll be sure to shoot pics once i get the handles on them.

There's a great market for handmade blades of any kind, and it's hard to say whether the handles will be your best selling point, or the steel itself! Lots of different "niche" markets there. Good luck!

Today I picked up a great little dump cart/wagon from TSC (Tractor Supply Company.) It was easy to assemble, holds 600 lbs., pulls and dumps like a dream! I've raked a lot of llama poop (which is like coffee beans), and chased my hat across the field and just had a great day OUTSIDE!!!!
I THOUGHT THAT SPRING WOULD NEVER GET HERE!!!!!!! HURRAY!!!!

Lots of different "niche" markets there. Good luck! I've been following a few professional knifemakers websites and such for some time now. I started with pieces of wood and cheap steel and learning how to contour them just so to make sure it made a fantasticly comfortable handle and still a great cutting tool as far as edge geometry. I chose an incredible steel and high quality handle materials so hopefully the whole package comes together perfectly and i make some cash off of my investment/gamble.

That's what being an entrepreneur is all about. You did your research, and from what I can see, you're going to end up with a quality product. So many people are so afraid of failure that they don't even try, and you just can't be afraid to fail if you want to succeed in the end. Good for you! You sound like you are enjoying the work. As long as you're making enough from each one to make you happy, and the work makes you happy, you're miles ahead of most of the people in this world.

More replacement fruit trees today! One apple, one nectarine, two apricots, two plums.......good grief, I never realized what a loss financially the big wind was here! I am so thankful for spring sales at the farm stores! Just about ready to start replacing the berries and grapes. It is so good to make some progress.

I got the job at the garden centre!
I'm going to get to my vegetable seeds this weekend. I'm glad it's spring too.
Sunset - what exactly do you do? You seem to have this wonderful farm full of fun and adventure.

Started grinding millscale off of a few knives today so i can thin them out more before heat-treating them on Tuesday. My schedules been pushed back a full week now due to relying on others who offered their services. I can not wait until i have all of the equipment myself.
@pirhan: Congrats on the new job. I hope its what you're looking for.

You seem to have this wonderful farm full of fun and adventure. Congratulations, Pirhan! I hope you have as much fun as I did. You'll be surprised how much you learn just by being there. What do I do? Most of the past 20 years has been stay-at-home mom, volunteer kid-watcher, small farmer----I do pretty much whatever the day calls for. I am really hoping to get back to some artwork. It seems that every time I have set up a "studio" space, something has come up that was more important than sitting and drawing or painting, etc., so it's all just waiting for me, someday. It's not all fun, but it's definitely an adventure!

I just made my first bottle of home made ginger ale. It was really good. I have to split the winnings with a friend for giving me a ride to the store one day. ;D
