[The Dream and the Nightmare]

As consciousness bloomed, thoughts began to stir, confused and agitated. The infant's mind could sense something amiss; however the child knew not what it was. It was incredibly dark, and the infant tried to wail, the cry falling silent upon non-existent ears. It was as if the world that should have been out there wasn't, for all was black and sound was mute, touch was gone. Long moments passed in the void before the child realized that it could move. One finger, two, three, the others... they all worked.. touch was here. What was that strange thing? A type of shuffling, though greatly distorted.. voice? Yes, someone out there was speaking. But where...? Where was sight?

The infant felt alone and isolated again, unsure as of how this was supposed to be, for the child knew nothing else. It simply felt wrong on some primal level. The mind of the infant slipped into the more relaxed state of sleep, where there was no need to think of these things immediately. Only in sleep could the infant see, and so there the child dwelled.

It was in the darkness that the child first began to view its other life, an existence that defined meaning but ultimately mattered little in the waking world. There were brief flashes of bright color and diluted images that shifted and spoke in voices it did not recognize and had never heard before. Dreaming was not a concept that was comprehensible, but the infant understood that something odd was happening, not to its physical existence perhaps, but certainly to its mind.

Subtly the child withdrew from these flashes of colorful dreams, and in an instant it was bathed in cool moonlight, black water gliding to and from starlit islands; then it was flying through the night air on borrowed wings, a cool and soothing sphere caressing its back. It was a calming dream, smooth and uneventful... peaceful. The infant found itself suddenly on the ground, watching the night sky.

So alone though... Things somehow didn't add up. The child wanted to see both the other world and the place where it was at now. Again the infant receded into itself, finding peace there.

This is only a dream. However... it is a pleasant dream.

A dream? This is no dream...

And there the child saw the looming forest, suddenly dark and foreboding. Terrifying, shadowy, dangerous... and yet intriguing. Creatures hissed from the forest, eyes flashed warningly. In this nightmare they thrived.

This is a nightmare, not some paltry dream!

This is only a nightmare if you so choose it to be. Please make it stop... it wastes energy that can be used for other things. Besides, I wish to bask in the light of that cool sphere, there in the dark sky.

And suddenly all was calm again. But then the edges of the dream crinkled and shimmered, twisted with the dark vines of a summoned nightmare.

I don't want it to stop... It's sharp and interesting! It calls to me, embraces me! I can protect...

Logic and emotions began to collide inside of the infant's mind. Suddenly the soothing moon was hidden behind a veil of clouds, swirling clouds battling against clouds adorned in thorns.

What was happening? Was it bad?

What is bad? Is this bad?

The infant again cried out, its sleep a chaotic realm of dream and nightmare fighting for supremacy.

I want this dream!

I want this nightmare!

The child cringed, confused as to what it wanted. Nightmares were supposed to be intimidating and terrifying, and yet the infant wanted something to feed its emotions. Dreams were supposed to be fun and exhilarating, but the infant simply wanted it for it's logical perspective. These two things... how was one supposed to have two?

You can have your dark and sharp and exciting. It is much more logical to choose this dream, for it saves energy and is much less dangerous.

Dangerous? I can protect against anything perilous. Take your calm dreams, your cool spheres and cotton clouds, but I shall have these other nightscapes, the ones that you refuse to claim.

But at least here or there... We won't be alone. The infants then felt better.

[Meeting the Tamers]

Lady Mist
After sending in the request for her 'com, Mist found herself constantly visiting the lab. Or, at least, it's front door. She never managed to push herself through to actually go see if the 'com was in the process of being built or not. After a fair amount of time had passed, however, Mist finally determined that it would be safe to go check up.

Standing before the familiar doors of the dome, the young woman finally stepped through and was greeted by the same, ever-white walls of the lab. "Hello?" She called out, walking towards the front desk. With any luck, she would be able to see how her 'com was doing, or at least hear of any updates.

Lady_Ourania
It had been nearly a week since Ourania had been forced to sneak out of the building and back to her shoddy little apartment, fearful that her old-boyfriend was hot on her tail. As such, she had neglected to return to the lab for quite sometime, but today she had worked up enough courage to drive there and seek out more information about her own 'com. She was dressed a bit cold for the weather, having not believed the weatherman when he had claimed there would be a break in the hot temperatures that had dominated most of the month.

Her sneakers made no noise against the polished floor of the labs when she entered the establishment, catching sight of a second woman who was peeking around the front desk. She looked slightly familiar, but with only the back of her head to go by and brief snatches of her face, Ourania couldn't be sure.

Lady Mist
Hearing the door, Mist looked over her shoulder and spotted a familiar looking woman. As the woman came closer, Mist smiled and gave a wave in recognition, "Oh! Hello Ourania. It's... odd meeting you here. How are you?" She went through the basic greeting required by society, but was really itching to ask why she was here. She could assume that she was here for a 'com, but it seemed rather strange seeing someone she knew at this unusual lab.

Mist had met Ourania at a bookstore that she often frequented. Whether to research things or gain references for her art, or to simply escape to a calm place, Mist found herself at the bookshop often. As a regular, she had gotten to recognizing the people who worked there, including Ourania. While they were never really close, they had talked often enough to at least know eachother's names and a few basic things going on in life such as work and whatnot.

Lady_Ourania
Recognition flooded her features. "Mist! Hi." she returned, stepping closer, pleased at having found another warm body in the cold, clinical feeling of the labs. "I'm fine, what about you? It really is weird meeting in a place like this..."

Weird was a quaint word, but only began to describe the events taking place. She wondered what the other woman was here for, trying to recall if she had ever said anything about the labs during their brief conversations. "You don't work around here, do you? I could have sworn you said you were an artist."

Lady Mist
"That's good to hear. I'm doing pretty well also." The black haired girl nodded her head, listening intently to Ourania as if the world was about to end. Heck, for all she knew, the world could be about to end. A few seconds passed, however, and Mist decided that the world wasn't about to end just then.

Mist then laughed nervously, though feeling more comfortable with someone that she knew, "I was about to ask you the same question. No, I don't work here. I came to see what the lab was about, and to... er, see about a 'com that I ordered. You've been here before?"

Lady_Ourania
Ourania felt astonishment run its electric fingers along her spine. "A 'com? Really? Me too. I was actually here last week but I had to... leave in a hurry." No need to alert Mist as to her current issues, they had spoken only briefly over coffee and books, that did not give her the right to dump her life story on this artistic woman.

Still, she was faintly curious at what this woman wanted a 'com for: bohemian types tended to be anti-tech. It was nice to see that Mist wasn't the archetypal starving artist who refused to eat anything that didn't have an organic sticker slapped on. Slightly annoyed at herself for stereotyping, Ourania smiled. "I really didn't expect to see anyone I knew from.. the outside here. Isn't that strange? It isn't like a parallel universe or anything, but it certainly feels that way."

Lady Mist
"Oh hey, that's great. I'm really looking forward to getting a 'com. It does seem... odd to see a familiar face. This place just kind of popped up out of nowhere, so I guess it does give that kind of impression." Mist smiled, her mind churning chaotically through trying to figure out how to keep the conversation going. She went through the basic greeting, and they were having the mild chitter chatter, so, according to a book on social interactions that she had read, she would need to find a subject matter that she could get into. Suddenly her mind fell blank.

Mist could, at least partially, fit into the stereotypical artist catagory. At times she would get so involved in a piece of work that she literally forgot to eat meals at times (not quite the same thing as a 'starving' artist, but she thought it was close enough), and she never really got into much technology since she didn't feel the need to. It wasn't that she was against it, she just didn't pay it any heed. As thus, she felt completely out of place in such a high tech lab. Mist wanted to get a 'com to try and help herself get used to the presence of others. It was her way of trying to be less of a recluse, and it would also be nice to have some help around the apartment.

Perhaps she should have gotten some bulky, scary 'com to put her neighbours in place. The walls of the apartment were thin, and the party animals and arguers seemed to have gathered right around her to where it was incredibly hard to concentrate on any project. Then again, if she got a scary 'com, she herself would probably be intimidated.

"So, um..." Mist blinked, "How's work? Oh, how did you find out about this place?" The first question came out slowly, then suddenly her mind clicked and leapt at the opportunity of thinking up of a second question, of which she readily blurted out. Haha, she was becoming triumphant over this 'conversation' thing.

Lady_Ourania
Ourania nodded to Mist's interpretation of the building; it had seemed to magically appear one day, ironic considering how technologically imbued the building was. She noted that the young woman seemed to be somewhat uncertain about conversation, or at least uncomfortable when it came to keeping it going. Unfortunate, really, as she wasn't much of a talker herself.

At the artist's question, Ourania thought back. "Mmm... someone at the bookstore mentioned it, actually. I was putting books away and I overheard..." she flushed slightly, not willing to lie about her eavesdropping habit: things could grow boring in a bookstore after a time. "Anyway, I decided to go see it for myself and after I debated for a while, I decided having a 'com would be beneficial considering the neighborhood I'm currently living in... thankfully, though, I'm looking to relocate."

Lady Mist
"The neighbourhood you live in? Which area is it at? If you don't mind my asking." Mist added on quickly. She wondered briefly if perhaps Ourania was getting a 'com for protection against the neighbourhood, since she had the impression that it was perhaps rough around the edges. Then again, she could be wrong.

Lady_Ourania
"Remember that homicide that was in the news recently, down near Walden? That's my neighborhood, nice little place, huh?" she shifted through her purse, looking for chapstick. "The rent was cheap though, and I needed to move out pretty fast. It's just temporary until I can find someway to pay for the apartment building I've been eyeing closer to the outskirts of town, near the country."

[Mad Scientists and Complications]

Koyuki Shirogane
"Mmm, get OFF, Eva," the nutty scientist of the lab that everyone is, well, standing in, yelled.

Quite loudly.

Over the AP system.

There were smothered sounds of brutal physical struggling before KOYUKI TEH SCIENTIST emerged as the winner. Woohoo! She stepped out, hair mussed but triumphant, and greeted the two.

"HEYO! ARE YOUUU..." she looked at her list... but her list isn't there... "WELL, THE PEOPLE I CALLED IN, YES?"

Lady Mist
"That place? Dang! That is pretty harsh. I hope you can move out quickly. And I thought my apartment was evil. I have noisy neighbours is really all, though, but can't really afford much else either. By Walden... that must really be kind of creepy." Mist rubbed her hands together, as if caught by a sudden chill wind.

"Near the country? That sounds fu--" Mist paused, wincing suddenly as a rather loud voice shattered the calm air. The black haired woman looked up, staring at the sudden entrance of their.. er, professional scientist. Mist coughed to cover up her surprise, then blinked again as if to try and clarify the situation. "Er... I think... we are?"

Lady_Ourania
"It was pretty bad. I put extra locks on my doors after I heard about it." The female admitted.

She had been about to nod to Mist's statement about fun in the country, but then a sudden noise blasted over the speakers and she was momentarily deafened. Witholding the urge to squeak, she waved meekly to the woman who had appeared, shaking her head affirmatively to Mist's near question.

Koyuki Shirogane
"Good, good, you're BOTH here. That makes Koyuki a happy pregnant scientist~~" she sang out, oblivious to the fact that she had just managed to ruined the ear drums of the poor civilians of Gaia.

Harhar. Moodswings.

She extracted another bar of chocolate from her pocket and immediately brought it to her mouth, nibbling at the wrapper, "Okay, shall we get to business?"

Lady Mist
"Ah--right." Mist abruptly nodded her head, a little surprised at the woman's extreme perky-ness. "Would there be a chance to see the 'com?" She really wasn't sure what else she was to say. Koyuki was blatantly pregnant, as seen through her cheerfulness and sudden upbringing of chocolate. Oo, chocolate? Mist eyed the candy carefully, then snapped herself back to attention.

Lady_Ourania
Ourania tilted her head to the side, wondering at this female scientist. She seemed awfully... chipper for one in her field: wasn't it a requirement to have a face like a prune, a tweed jacket, and about four or five degrees tucked under a belt in order to even begin considering playing with the human genome? Apparently not...

"Umm... certainly." she replied, tempted to question Mist's question and not stare at the somewhat eccentric scientist before her.

Koyuki Shirogane
Koyuki grinned and nodded, "Okay, that works! Mm, there's a bit of a minor complications in the uhm... you'll see."

She meandered off, beckoning with the free hand, and went back into the room that she came from. First off, well...

She apparently forgot the door was closed. Walking straight into it, the young woman immediately muttered a stream of colourful expressions that would go over the PG-13 rating of any good little avatar-oriented website, she turned around to the code pad and glared at it.

"Let me in, fool!"

No response.

Sighing resignedly, she punched in the code that was embedded into her memory and continued her seemingly mindless wandering.

Sharp turn to the right.

Okay, so she did know where she was going.

Lady Mist
Complications? For which 'com? Mist began to worry suddenly, then she began to take a step forward to follow the scientist, who must be intelligent to be called a scientist, but then paused as the woman promptly ran into the door. Mist nearly jumped from surprise, but managed to maintain herself, "Are you--" Her voice was suddenly lost at the stream of harsh words. Maybe she should try and paint that scene one day. It would certainly be a good use of color.

Now completely unsure of herself, Mist meekly followed Koyuki who had swung from a freakishly perky mood to an extremely dangerous one. If Mist had any thoughts of children, she decided that she would consider adoption first.

Lady_Ourania
The scientist's words struck an unnatural fear in her heart, and Ourania couldn't help but wonder if this was what parents felt when their children were ill. She pushed the thought away, allowing Mist to begin the questioning and nearly gawking when Koyuki ran into a door. "Umm..." That woman could curse someone's ear off, she was certain, making her wonder who the lucky father was and how they would cope when their baby was delivered.

When Mist became silent, Ourania took up the cause, careful with her word choice around the scientist erratic temperment. "I'm sorry, Miss Koyuki, but could you elaborate a bit? What was the complication?"

Koyuki Shirogane
"Mmmmm~~" the female scientist murmured happily as she devoured the entire chocolate bar and threw the wrapper into the wastebasket behind her without looking.

"Well..." she started, as she entered yet another room and weaved through the machineries that held the children until she reached a pod that swirled black and white, "No, the children are fine. The complications I mean are ... complications that require the two of you."

She eyed them, sombering and acting more, well, mature, "This one child's dreams seemed to have conflicted and..."

Whipping out yet another chocolate bar, she gnawed it thoughtfully and finished, "And see, the child is now... two children. Two separate children born from conflicting thoughts, but shares a soul. Basically."

Lady Mist
Mist tried to multitask through following Koyuki at the same time of looking every-which way except for forward. Machines buzzed about her, but when Koyuki spoke again, she instantly switched her attention back.

Conflicted dreams? Okay, that didn't sound too ba-- Mist blinked abruptly. How can two different beings share only one soul? What did that mean for the 'com..s? The black haired woman shifted on each foot nervously trying to figure out which of her questions she wanted to ask first. I don't know if I can support two 'coms... is that what she meant when she said she needed the two of us? The 'com... I hope they're okay... They don't get rid of things that go wrong do they? Mist suddenly panicked, 'causing her to finally ask a question, "Half a soul doesn't mean that they're...dead...or..something, right? They're still okay? Er.." Again she shuffled her feet, this time not noticing the second chocolate bar being whipped out.

Lady_Ourania
This trip had abruptly turned into something that resembled a special on the SciFi channel. Gargantuan machinery fizzled and hissed respectively around them, glimmering in the lighting. But it quickly took on a surreal quality when Koyuki explained what had gone awry for 'com. How could two individuals share one soul? Was the scientist really talking about something as ethereal as a soul or was she just using the word for lack of a correct one? "Are they... going to display any abnormalities?" she added to Mist's question, gulping down on the bile in the back of her throat. She had an inkling why the scientist was glad both of them had appeared: two caretakers for two 'coms.

Koyuki Shirogane
"Simply put..." she adjusted her spectacles and fiddled with the unopen and uneaten piece of chocolate, "I don't know."

After a moment's thought, she apparently realize that the answer she provided was inadequated and added, "Oh, from the statistics and what I've seen, they act like normal children... or normal 'coms, I might as well as say. No abnormalties except for the fact that this pod was supposed to hold only one child. Now, I can't guarantee what will happen later on..."

She sighed.

"Well. At least I suppose you two know why both of you are here, instead of one of you? It took a while of pooling over applications, but it seems the two of you are the best suited guardians."

Lady Mist
"Oh..." Mist replied dumbly, pausing to try and collect her thoughts, "So they are like normal 'coms, just... a little different." Well, that didn't seem so hard. So all they had to do was take care of them as they would regularly, right?

Mist nodded her head as Koyuki spoke, feeling a little more reassured that she would be able to get her 'com safely, "Is there anything we need to do then?"

Lady_Ourania
No abnormalities now, but some could crop up later? Grand... "Has this ever happened before?" Ourania couldn't help but question the scientist. From her words, it seemed as though it had not. So they were the first to receive twin 'coms? She was trying to be optimistic, but doubts plagued her thoughts.

Koyuki Shirogane
"If it did..." she rubbed her templed and looked at them with a pout lingering on the edges of her lips, "I would've been able to do something about it. But alas... no. It has never happened. And I don't know why it happened."

Shuffling some papers around, she handed them both a form and a pen, "Well, these children aren't supposed to become twins, because unlike their sister models, they can't be bonded in pairs. That's where the two of you come in... you both will take a child. There's a boy and a girl in there, as far as I can tell. Mule it over, and choose what you will. Look at the pod if you want, but all you'll see is swirls and the hazy image of two children."

She got up again and tore open the chocolate bar, "I'll be in the reception to give you two time to talk and discuss... come out to look for me after you're done. I can answer more questions later."

Koyuki swooped out, nibbling at the chocolate absentmindedly.

Lady Mist
Mist held her hand out and accepted the form in silence. She stared at the words, but they didn't really register in her mind. The black haired woman watched as Koyuki exited, then turned and realized that they had been dropped off in front of a pod incircled in metal.

Setting the paper down on a counter, Mist walked over and peered into the glass-like part of the pod. Indeed, all she could see was a swirl of some kind of liquid, perhaps. She stared at it, and slowly her eyes adjusted to where she thought that she saw two shadows. Blinking, the woman took a step back, then turned back to the form.

"This is... not what I was expecting." Mist said abruptly as her eyes scanned over the sheet. She looked up at Ourania, "What do you think?" The question was general, but at the moment, that was about all that really came out.

After a few seconds, she slowly added, "Would my having the female be okay?" Mist had originally ordered a female, and was glad that there was one, however for all she knew, Ourania could have ordered a female as well. For the recluse, she felt more comfortable with the idea of a female 'com, who, being of the same gender, would be less of an intrusion to her, and perhaps be something of a daughter-figure. Not that she was looking for a child of course, it was simply a nice thought to Mist.

Lady_Ourania
Ourania stared at the forms, lips pursed in thought. She saw Mist approach the pod out of her peripheral vision, reluctant to do so herself as she wasn't entirely certain what it was she would be peering into.

At the artist's pronoucement, the pale woman gave a faint nod. She had not been anticipating something like this either. To answer Mist's questions, she elaborated. "I don't know what to think, but I certainly wouldn't be adverse to you becoming the girl's guardian. My 'com was to be male anyway, so it would actually work out for the best."

She put the clipboard with the forms down on the cool ground, rubbing her eyes. This was unbelievable. How could something of this magnitude have happened right under a leading group of scientists' noses? What did this 'sharing a soul' aspect entail? Would the twins be conjoined, perhaps? It seemed unlikely, but so did this whole situation. She found it would be better not to share her worries with Mist, certain that the artistic female had enough questions of her own.

Lady Mist
Mist smiled, relieved to hear that Ourania had no qualms about her taking the female 'com. She finished off the form, then set it aside and rubbed her hands together as if to warm herself, though the temperature of the lab seemed to be kept at a decent degree, if not a touch on the cool side, most likely to prevent any machines from overheating.

Looking back over at the pod, Mist found that she had trouble believing that a soul could be divided. What if it was some prank by the scientists, who were laughing at them even as they stood there now? She shook her head, instantly depriving herself of that particular thought. Well, Koyuki had said that they would be like normal 'coms, so she'd just be happy with that.

"Hey, do you think that we could get together sometime to just catch up? Once the 'coms are out, I think it'd be nice for them to visit eachother, seeing as they're... er.. siblings." Siblings wasn't quite the word she was looking for, but it was about as close as she could get. At least it sounded better than 'seeing as they're eachother', which barely made sense to Mist. Already the artist was feeling optimistic, though, and was actually looking forward to the new challenge that was put up.

Lady_Ourania
Picking up the form to give it a few brief penstrokes of fulfillment, Ourania also sidled up next to the pod, wondering at the writhing, mist-like imagery before her. "That would be a good idea... though I'd warn you not to come by any time after six, that's when most of the muggers are out looking for easy prey."

Gods but she hated her neighborhood. Why couldn't she live somewhere that had nice old ladies who baked extra cookies to bring over? Ourania hoped she could make a change of address before she received her 'com.

Lady Mist
"Er.." Mist suddenly remembered the area where Ourania was in, and decided to try and turn it another way, "Perhaps you could come over to my--er, no, wait.." If Mist invited Ourania to her place, then neither of them would be able to hear eachother, though she had no idea as to how the 'coms would react to the excess noise. Better safe than sorry though, "Maybe it'd be best to just meet up at the bookshop then..."

It wasn't much of a personal setting for the 'coms to meet up at whenever Mist and Ourania decided that they should visit, but it sounded much better than their current living quarters. Mist gave the pod one last, drawn out look, then turned back to her fellow 'com-owner-to-be, "I guess we just go give these to Koyuki now?"

Lady_Ourania
Ourania gave the pod one last glance before shuffling the forms back into proper order. "Yes, we probably should, it would be rude to make her wait."

After a few moments of silence, she decided she couldn't help but prod slightly. "Do you live in a craptastic neighborhood as well?"

Lady Mist
Mist nodded in agreeance, gathering the paper and pen into her hands. "My neighborhood certainly isn't as... er, difficult.. as yours is, but it's not exactly the ritz either. Not much on gang, but much too plenty on parties." Mist sighed, "I wouldn't mind making a move myself, but I don't have the money to go to a house or condo or something." She gave a shrug of resignation.

Mist blinked and looked around the area, suddenly trying to remember which way Koyuki had led them in. She thought she saw a machine that looked familiar, but then as she looked around again, she saw another that looked too similar. After a few more seconds passed, she finally spotted the door and took a step towards it.

Lady_Ourania
"Ah, frat neighborhood, that's definitely almost as bad." Ourania supplied with a slight grin. The expression faded as she considered the house she had been eyeing near the country; it would be within range if there was a second person about to foot some of the bills. But she couldn't quite manage to make the suggestion, it seemed so forward and sudden.

The pale woman followed Mist, pausing and taking stock of the layout of the room when she realized they were lost. But the artist seemed to have learned from her mistake and the door appeared before them. "This place is certainly..." What was the word? Odd, strange, unusual, a techno-geek's monotonous dream?

Koyuki Shirogane
If they were lost... well, they could probably follow the sound of Koyuki's music. The girl was really truly into the whole pregnancy-messes-up-your-mind-theory, either on purpose or as a real effect of her recent predictament. She developed a taste for Celine Dion and was currently blaring A New Day Has Come, despite the fact that it wasn't the best song to turn up. It simply wasn't jrock.

But none of the assistants dared to tell their boss to turn it down so they could concentrate.

Rather... she wasn't even listening to it. The wolf-girl was staring into space and possibly thinking about things that dwelled on the heart.

Lady Mist
Mist smirked and nodded her head, not quite surprised to find that her neighbourhood fit into a stereotypical title.

The black haired girl attempted to pick up on Ourania's sentence, but not quite sure how to explain the lab either, "Unique? Big? A geek's happy land?" She gave a shrug and pushed out the door, suddenly realizing that from over the buzz of the machines came music.

"This way, I'm guessing?" She said after a while, and pointed in the direction of the loud music. In a place of supposedly smart scientists, all one had to do was pick the odd thing that stuck out of place, follow it, and Mist was pretty sure that it would lead to their own dear Koyuki.

The duo finally managed to get out of the maze and into the room with the blaring music. Mist winced at the level of sound, though she knew she should be used to that kind of thing. Waving her arm, Mist decided not to try calling out to the scientist with her voice, seeing as it'd probably get drowned out.

Koyuki Shirogane
It took a while for Koyuki to snap out of it, and when she did, she nearly fell over her tilted chair. A miraculous save involving hooking her foot onto a ridge beneath her desk and an impromptu grab for the nearest object kept her from possibly miscarrying.

"Ne... that was faster than I thought," she smiled distractedly and turned off the music, "Have you two... decided?"

In the other rooms, there was an almost audible sigh escaping from the breathes of all the assistants at the same time. Peace. Quiet.

They really need to figure out how to lock their beloved boss out.

Lady_Ourania
Ourania smiled behind her hand at Mist's interpretation of the lab, so similar to her own. The pale woman shrugged, gesturing for the artist to lead on as her sense of direction was nearly as bad as her decisiveness.

The music was... loud, in a word, and led them almost directly to the pregnant scientist. Ourania gave a short nod to Koyuki's question, biting on her lip nervously and looking to Mist. "We've decided that we would love to become the twins' guardians."

Lady Mist
Mist nodded in agreement to Ourania's words, her black hair bobbing lightly at the sudden movement, and added, "I would like to take care of the female, and Ourania has said that she is fine with the male."

The girl was at a loss for words, since she barely knew what she was doing. She suddenly wished that she had stayed to watch the pod a bit longer, as if the gleam some sort of insight or knowledge as to their beings. Mist sighed to herself, then looked back at the scientist.

Koyuki Shirogane
She nodded, "Good, I'll take the forms and file them away, and you can drop in at any time to visit... provided they're within the proper visiting hours."

Standing up with a bit of difficulty, she smiled at them, "Weeeeell, thank you two... I was hoping both of you could take up the children. I'll call you if there's any problems."

Koyuki glanced at the clock, "If you have any questions, feel free to ask."

Lady Mist
Mist nodded her head, not trusting herself to use words. She would have a 'com... A flare of excitement lit up, immediatly followed by worry. The woman calmed herself down, then decided to ask a question or two, "When will they be able to come out of the pods?"

Lady_Ourania
Ourania had the distinct impression that they had worn out their welcome, but waited around to hear Koyuki's answer. So she would finally obtain her 'com... but at what price? What risk? He was normal now, but there was always going to be that opportunity for disaster to come tumbling in, the gates thrown wide open in light of scientific experiments that she could only half understand.

She had a headache growing behind her eyes and a reluctance to leave her 'com in a pod flickering through her chest. She knew it was necessary until a certain age, but it still felt strange. Mothers carried their children everywhere with them, had the still forming infants listen and learn their voices even through the womb. This was a bit less natural... would he know her when he was old enough to leave the labs? Could he hear her through the steel and liquid of the pod? She was too embarrassed to ask, but Ourania knew that it would worry her well into this process.

Koyuki Shirogane
"It depends on the child. Averagely saying, it takes about a week or two... but it really is up to the child. When he/she feels the right time has come, he/she'll send us a signal," Koyuki replied, as if she had all this memorized and had been repeating to just about everyone who walked through the stark-white doors of the lab.

She then chuckled, and folded her hands so her fingers crossed one another, "If I said this already, I'll say it again, you may come in anytime to visit the pods... they can feel your presence outside, even if they can't see you."

"You just have to let them know you care, and they will love you back. It's like how it is with real children."

At the word 'children', her eyes lingered on her stomach and then settled on the two guardians-to-be in front of her again.

Lady Mist
Mist again nodded her head as the scientist spoke, watching as Koyuki's eyes graced her stomach with that motherly glint. "Would it be okay to go and see them again right now?" Mist figured she was pushing her luck with being here constantly, but she couldn't help herself. She was worried, and wanted to make sure that her 'com was growing well.

Lady_Ourania
Ourania blinked in blatant surprise, wondering how it was that Koyuki had answered her question without her voicing it. Apparently motherhood made one a tad bit psychic. She smiled at Mist's question, also wanting to examine the babes inside the pod more thoroughly now that she truly knew one was hers and this wasn't some strange dream or petty joke.

Koyuki Shirogane
Psychic? Nah. It was merely... motherly instinct, and the fact that every single of her current guardians pretty much asked the same question, and she just knew..

Okay, and she liked to think she was psychic.

"Go ahead, if you any help, find Eva. I must go now... I have other duties to attend to," she grinned broadly and waved them off, "Go now, shoo. Get familiar with them."

Lady Mist
Suddenly Mist felt childishly bubbly, as if she wanted to yell out 'yaay!' and run for ice cream. The recluse retained her emotion, however, and focused it into a more subtle smile, "Thank you,"

Mist bobbed her head once, looked over at Ourania, then turned around and tried to remember where the door was. It was that one door by that one white wall, next to all those other white walls...

She started to walk in the general direction they came from, pausing when it felt that she had walked as far as when they had come through. Mist looked at the door closest to her, then peeked in at all the mechanics. Either all of the rooms looked the same (which Mist thought they probably did), or she believe she found the right one. Mist looked over to see if she could catch Koyuki to see if that was the right door, but thought better of it since the scientist probably wanted to attend to her other duties.

Lady_Ourania
Smiling slightly at having been 'shooed', Ourania bowed her head politely. "Thank you for your time." she echoed after Mist, following the artist in her mad streak to find the twins once more.

When she realized that they were lost, she stopped and looked about, trying to remember what she had seen on the way out the door. "I think it's that one." Ourania said, pointing to the door nearest Mist. "... But it's kind of hard to tell, isn't it?"

Lady Mist
"Er, well, all we can do is try." Mist said and followed Ourania's finger. Peeking through the door, Mist was again greeting by the gentle buzzing of machines. She wandered through a bit, looking across the shadows and the areas lit by the little lights on the machines.

Finally the two females came upon the pod, it's inside glowing with life that was hiden behind a veil of swirls. Mist's eyes fell upon the sheilded children, their forms barely visible. Now that she was here, Mist wasn't sure about what to do again. For now she simply stared at it, a feeling of awe falling upon her shoulders as she realized that the 'com inside is growing, and would continue to grow. She smiled warmly at the pod, her pale hand reaching out and touching the warmed glass that separated them from each other. Blinking out of her little reverie, Mist stepped back again, not wanting to take the view away from Ourania.

The black haired girl pulled up a chair and sat down at a small table that held a light scatter of paper work. She propped her chin up upon her hands, and let her elbows rest on the tabletop. As intimidating as all the technology was, Mist actually found that it was rather peaceful as well. Huh.

Lady_Ourania
The female wasn't sure if the lab had grown darker in Koyuki's absence, but the gigantic machinery certainly felt less welcoming when it was only her and Mist. When she came upon the pod again, however, the swarming blackness seemed to fade away slightly, soften at the edges. "They're... so fragile looking." Ourania managed while leaning over the pod. Well, at least the parts of them she could see correctly looked fragile.

She took the other side of the pod so that Mist could lean in and examine as she pleased, knowing that the artist wanted to get as close to the twins as she could manage: Ourania knew because she felt almost exactly the same way. "Do you... think they'll be okay? Koyuki said that something like this has never happened before..." she hated to be the damning voice of pessimism, but the pale woman was worried.

Lady Mist
Mist greatfully took position beside the pod, feeling it's warm surface, while the cool air at her back sent her a quick jolt of chills. The air around her was tense, but gradually she relaxed into the calming hum of the machines, "They do look fragile," she agreed with a quiet voice, "But I think they'll be fine." The black haired woman nodded her head reassuringly, "The pod looks like it has enough room for the two of them to grow without causing each other harm, and I'm sure we can handle what comes."

Mist's eyes fell upon the casing, and she watched the swirls with a feeling of content. Her mind needed no thoughts, for as an artist she had a habit of simply spacing out and watching things for the sake of watching them. She was suddenly struck by the thought that this would probably be what it was like to try and look into a woman's pregnant stomach. The pale female blinked, not really sure of what to think.

Lady_Ourania
((Ahh, alright. That does make things easier. And I do have the old url, it's so nice and clean! Great job, Misty.))

Reassured by Mist's confidence, Ourania too looked into the swirling contents of the capsule. It looked slightly like dragon's breath, curling in a billowing, liquidy fashion that was hypnotizing. She pulled away for a moment, her vision confusing her brain; it seemed so unnatural and yet so right all at the same time. She would be glad when she could hold her 'com instead of feel the casing surrounding him and his twin sister.

Glancing up at Mist, she noticed her slightly bewildered expression and wondered what the artist was thinking, if their thoughts were similar.

Lady Mist
Hypnotizing was certainly a good word for it. Mist had to make a near visible attempt to pull herself away from the pod, mezmerizing as it was, to step back and take a breath, "We should probably get going before it gets late." She said absent mindedly. She didn't really want to leave, but figured that they could always come back the next day. Besides, she needed to make sure the party-goers didn't smash in her apartment window or some fool-hardy thing.

Lady_Ourania
"I suppose." Ourania replied reluctantly, caressing the glass of the pod as tenderly as she would have the child which resided inside of it. "Goodnight, you two. Sweet dreams..."

She waited for Mist to say her farewells too, knowing full well that it would be easier to find their way out of the labs together. Plus, though she felt silly admitting it even silently to herself, it seemed wrong to leave the artist there alone. They were only acquaintances, perhaps on the verge of becoming friends, but the bond went deeper than that now. The twins had made certain of that, accidently or not.

Lady Mist
Mist nodded and looked over at the pod, raising her hand as if to wave goodbye, although knowing that the twins probably couldn't even see it, much less know what the gesture meant, "Yes, sweet dreams. Don't let the bed bugs bite. And if they do, bite them back." She smiled warmly as she said the phrase that she had gotten from her father. It was strange, yet comforting, to pass on the same information that she had gained from her own parents.

The young woman turned around and stood beside Ourania, looking around until she found the door, "Ever feel like a rat in a maze?" She commented. It would have been a dry comment, except that she still had the feeling of awe over her shoulders that softened her words. The 'com... The artist shook her head, then walked with Ourania to the door. She felt unspoken words tell her that she would see Ourania again. It would seem wrong for the twins not to be able to visit one another, and she found Ourania's more reserved manner to be likeable compared to the outgoing, loud neighbours.

As the duo fell into the white hallway, Mist noticed that the scientist was absent from the room that she was in before, though Mist wasn't really surprised. "I'll probably stop by the bookshop tomorrow before I come back to the lab. I need to buy a book that I keep forgetting to get." She was incredibly forgetful at times, which was quite strange since at other times she could remember things instantly. Mist figured that if it was visually noticable (such as the lab or written notes) then she would remember it, but if it was a thought to herself or something verbally said, then there was a good chance that it would go in one ear and rocket out the other.

Lady_Ourania
Ourania snickered at the artist's comment. "I think that's what this place was designed for; they have cameras on every level to watch the unwary and finding the exit sign is like locating the wheel of cheese."

She eyed the seemingly endless sterilty of the hallways, snapping her attention back to Mist when she spoke. "Oh, tell me the title and I'll keep it behind the counter for you to pick up." Mostly a pointless gesture as the bookstore was hardly ever busy, but it felt like a polite offer for someone who would be taking care of her 'com's sister. "I have the morning shift, seven to one." she added vaguely, smiling triumphantly and pointing to the green sign above a doorway. "Found the cheese." she said with a half-hearted giggle; she could be charmingly corny given a chance.

Lady Mist
Mist chuckled at their exchange of mouse-and-cheese conspiracies, then smiled appreciativly, "Oh, sure, thank you. It's called Perspective Landscapes, though I forgot who the author was. Erlith--something or other. It's supposed to have good references for land and citys and whatnot. I'll stop by during your shift then."

The artist looked up at Ourania's pointed finger, snickering behind her hand as it did indeed seem like they were the mice who had found the cheese. Mist sighed in relief when they made it to the receptionist's area, then turned to her fellow 'com owner, "I shall see you later then," She smiled, "Thank you, and good luck with finding a new place!"

Mist gave a quick wave, then stepped through the door, squinting at the sunlight and letting her eyes adjust. One last glance at the dome was given, then she went on her way.

Lady_Ourania
Ourania mentally catalogued the title and the author, trying to remember exactly where she had seen the book before. When the pale woman recalled where it was she gave a crisp nod. "Got it. I'll have it saved. If you can't make it in the morning just tell Cathy that it's in the reserved drawer." She hoped that Cathy would know where that was: for one thing they hardly ever had people reserve copies of books and for another Cathy was sadly scatter-brained.

The outside looked pleasantly bright and welcoming despite the fact that it was cold. "See you later, Mist. Thanks." she replied with a wave, taking off hurriedly down the street before she missed her bus.
