[Name] Alexis Gideon, Allie if you're a friend.
[Age] 23
[Gender] Female
[Hair] Choppy brown, one might assume she gives herself haircuts.
[Eyes] Grey-blue

Alexis grew up in a remote area of Northern Canada. When the earthquake that started the Cambrian phenomenon hit, she was sleeping soundly, and didn't hear about the disaster until late in the afternoon that day. One couldn't say she was entirely disintrested in the earthquake or the damage it caused, but at her age and at such a distance away, she really couldn't relate. The discovery of the Cambrians, on the other hand, was intensely enchanting. As children often do, Alexis spent much of the next few years dreaming about one day finding her own pet Cambrian. When it came time to enter university and choose her program, Alexis decided to major in biology, with a special interest in prehistoric fossils. With degree in hand, Alexis decided to pick up and move to California. She told herself repeatedly that it was in pursuit of a job in a new and interesting (and warmer!) environment, but there was always the nagging hope in the back of her mind that her childhood dream would one day become a reality.

Wikipedia
Haikouichthys ercaicunensis was a primitive fish-like animal from the Middle Cambrian Maotianshan shales of China.
Cladistic analysis indicates that the animal is probably a primitive agnathid fish most closely related to the Lampreys. It is about 2.5cm long and is narrower than the Myllokunmingia, another primitive fish that comes from the same beds. The holotype was found in the Yuansshan member of the Qiongzhusi Formation in the 'Eoredlichia' Zone near Haikou at Ercaicun, Kunming City, Yunnan, China. The animal has a distinct head and trunk. The head has at least six and perhaps nine probable gills. There are a number of segments (myomeres) with rear directed Vs in the trunk. There is probably a notochord although only a short segment is preserved in the single known specimen. The tail end of the animal is apparently missing. There is a prominent dorsal fin with fin radials. The fin radials seem to angle "forward" toward the end thought on the basis of internal structures to be the head. This happens with a few modern fish but is an uncommon arrangement. There is a ventral fin fold. There are 13 circular structures along the bottom that may be gonads, slime organs, or something else entirely. There is no sign of mineralization of the skeletal elements.

News
22 September 2006 - Began work on the journal, filling in information for the intro post, toc, Alexis Gideon, and H. Ercaicunensis posts. Waiting for egg discovery to fill in any info about Eclipse or Alexis' life after Eclipse. Added a sketch of Alexis, and posted some journal entries, pre-Eclipse.
24 September 2006 - Wrote a little diary entry for Alexis, but I forgot to mention on 22/23 September that I responded to my egg discovery prompt from peej.
31 July 2007 - Finally updated again. I completed two solo journal posts, in hopes of bringing Alexis into a position where she can be roleplayed with other people.
1 August 2007 - Updated the Eclipse Info post so that it now actually contains info about Eclipse.

Entry in a Tattered Journal
I've finally done it. I rented an apartment in an area outside of Rosewood, Southern California and I leave tomorrow. My parents think I'm going because of the Cambrians, but that's not true...is it? Although, I must admit that it would be pretty cool to find one. As if that would ever happen. I tried to pack pretty light because the apartment is pretty tiny. I don't need any of my winter things, that's for sure. I think I'll pack my fish bowl..You know, in case I want a pet. Apartments don't allow cats or anything. Dad is flying me over tomorrow, bright and early. I'd better get to sleep. Goodnight, Journal.

Entry in a Tattered Journal
I arrived at my new apartment early this morning. I've barely started unpacking. The view from my window is lovely, but the apartment is small, like I thought. The walls are a dull off-white and the flooring ranges from pea green to pumpkin orange. That will have to change asap. I haven't yet been into Rosewood proper yet. That'll be an adventure for after my nap, I think. Dad warned me to be good before he left. As if I'll go looking for trouble. Anyways Journal, I've got a lot of work to do. Talk to you later.

Entry in a Tattered Journal
Mom flew over today and we spent the day exploring Rosewood. Little Spain was cute, but I really wanted to see the Jianfeng Institute. The idea made mom really uncomfortable, so we avoided any "Cambrian areas". One of these days I'll have to stop by Abyss Beach, just to see it. I guess I'd better start my job hunt soon, but I'm really unmotivated. I just need to get settled. Goodbye for now, Journal.

The little park by the canal isn't far from the beach, but it still doesn't seem like a place conducive to alien life-forms. Pleasant enough, with a smatter of picnic benches and swings, their cracked rubber seats swaying in the breeze. The park is quiet, mostly or perhaps completely empty except for you. Nothing but the rusty creak of old and seldom-oiled swing chains to break the silence.

Should you decide to move closer to the canal, you will now hear the faint sound of water lapping against the canal's single, tiny dock. The water is murky and brackish. Though not very visually appealing, it is clear of weeds and debris... correction: mostly clear. There is something sticky wrapped around one of the dock's supports, a jelly-coated strand of eggs. If you bend down to investigate, you will see that the eggs have a faint glimmer to them. Perhaps you will even catch a strange whiff of something that is completely inappropriate for this dark canal -- the distant and unmistakable scent of forest; rich, green and sweet.

Since her arrival in Rosewood, Southern California, Alexis Gideon had failed repeatedly to make herself approach Abyss Beach. Every morning she had planned to make the trip, something urgent came up. The first time, she simply had to organize her sock drawer. The second time, she realized that could no longer stand the hideous colours of her apartment and had to repaint immediately. Alexis realized her foolishness, and after her second week in Rosewood spent performing inane tasks, she decided to make the trip. Unfortunately, the day she planned to leave, a member of the infamous Pikaia’s Children movement gave a speech over the radio, decrying the abominable Cambrians and rallying all of their followers to a demonstration on Abyss Beach. Dejected, Alexis decided to make the trip anyways, but instead of the beach proper, went to a small park nearby.

The park was entirely empty on her arrival. Perhaps everyone is at the demonstration, she thought bitterly. The old, worn swings were swaying almost eerily; an appropriate effect for Alexis’ current mood. She sat on the nearest swing and listened to the creaking as she stared out into the water. After sitting in near-silence for fifteen minutes or so, Alexis jumped off the swing and wandered towards the small dock. She stood staring into the entirely unappealing water while listening to the sounds of water lapping against the dock for quite some time before bothering to look down. Her heart skipped a beat, but she quickly chastised herself and bent to investigate. Wrapped around the support beam of the dock was a string of sticky looking eggs.

There’s no way these are Cambrian eggs, Alexis told herself. Though the park was close to Abyss Beach, it didn’t seem like the sort of place that the alien eggs would thrive in. Nevertheless, upon closer inspection the eggs seemed to be giving off a faint golden glow.

User Image“Probably pollen,” scoffed Alexis, sniffing. The smell that filled her nostrils was far from what she had expected. The scent instantly brought to mind the forest near her home that she used to play in as a child. It was the unmistakable smell of trees, of thick forest. Disconcerted, Alexis stood and cleared her nose of the smell. Almost as if in a trance, she removed her water bottle from her backpack and emptied it. It was one of those unbreakable ones, and she thought it would be alright to keep the little eggs safe until she got back home. She filled the bottle with the brackish water of the canal and gently nudged the strand of eggs into the bottle with a stick. She was halfway home before she realized what she was doing.

User ImageI’m being silly, she thought to herself. There is absolutely no way these are Cambrian eggs. They’re some poor fish’s eggs that I’ve just stolen. Despite her reservations, Alexis walked the rest of the way home. She unpacked her fish bowl from storage and set up the rocks, plant, and plastic treasure chest. She’d wanted a fish anyways, so if these did turn out to be ordinary eggs, which was most likely, she could probably keep the babies as pets. Unscrewing the lid of the water bottle, she caught the distinct smell of lush greenery, and quickly dumped the contents into the fish bowl.

“Goodnight little eggs,” Alexis whispered as she turned off the light and shut the door. The eggs glowed faintly in response.

Entry in a Tattered Journal
Last night I dreamt that I was running through a deep forest. Not running like I used to do as a kid, that was clumsy and unnatural compared to this. I was soaring, completely in my element. I guess it's because of that smell surrounding the fish eggs I found yesterday. Speaking of, I don't know how to tell if they're okay or not...I'm worried that transporting them away from home may have hurt them, but they've still got that weird golden glow so I think they're okay. I hope they hatch soon, I need to know what kind of food to buy them. Seeya later, Journal.

It's been an odd few days. The nights must have been odd as well. If you are the type of person that remembers your dreams, you may be remembering some real strange ones. Perhaps you've dreamt of being transported to that forest again. It's hard to tell just what kind of forest it is. The trees are massive, their leaves filtering the sunlight into an indistinct green-gold glow. It seems to be a mix of the redwood forest and something altogether ... different. You aren't the only one dashing through this vertical world, either. From the corners of your eyes you may catch glimpses of bizarre animals, impossible to describe upon wakening.

If you happen to look down at your own body during these dreams, you'll notice that you are a whole lot more colorful than usual. Your hands look familiar, but your feet have changed quite a bit. It's hard to see them clearly through the lens of the dream, but you'll probably notice than they are a lot scalier than normal.

If you keep a close eye on your fish bowl, you'll see that the funny smell isn't the only thing green about the eggs. By the time they begin to hatch, some of them have grown a faint green dusting of algae. What emerges from the eggs isn't all that plant-like though. The largest egg splits, its occupant swiftly wriggling free. The little guy chows down on his own egg before turning to his siblings and chomping them too. Ouch. He must be hungry.

It’s that familiar scene again. As has been happening more and more frequently lately, the world of dreams has taken on the form of a lush forest. Alexis glances up through the canopy from her perch in a tree, her hand resting on its massive trunk. She can feel the rough bark under her fingers and wiggles her feet happily. She lazily glances downwards, following the path of the sunlight as it filters through the leaves, casting its greenish glow on her body. Her multi-hued scales sparkle with the green-gold light and she breathes deeply, reveling in the rich air. A movement from the corner of her eye catches her attention and suddenly she launches into the air. Leaping onto a lower branch, Alexis hears an unfamiliar and yet unmistakable laugh from behind her. She spins around and a lilting language reaches her ears. She opens her mouth to respond, her foot slipping from its precarious perch, her body shifting dangerously, and suddenly she awakens.

Alexis gasped as she startled herself awake. She sat bolt upright and patted her body, almost expecting to find scales covering her feet. It was a few moments before she realized that she’d had another dream again. The forest world was starting to feel more and more like home to her, as thoughts of it filtered through her mind even as she was awake. It was disturbing and extremely distracting. Alexis had finally found the will power to go on a job hunt, though the depletion of her savings had helped somewhat. Unfortunately, the images of the forest and bits of foreign conversation slipped constantly into her mind during the interviews she had managed to obtain, completely ruining her chances of being hired.

Reluctant to start her job hunt once more, Alexis shuffled through morning routine. With toothbrush in mouth, she mechanically opened the door to the spare bedroom and peeked in at the blob of fish eggs. Lately they had developed a greenish growth, which had caused Alexis to worry that they might be dead, but something caused her to keep them in the bowl. She had nearly shut the door again out of habit when a faint splashing sound caught her attention. She threw the door open and flicked on the light, catching sight of a small shape dart behind the plastic treasure chest in the bottom of the bowl as the light struck the glass. Cowering behind its plastic shield was a fish unlike any Alexis had ever seen before. Just one fish.

Where are all of the other eggs? Alexis thought, watching the lone pink fish cautiously leave the protection of the chest and head straight for a pile of green goo. She watched with a sort of horrified curiosity as the fish devoured the remainder of his siblings’ eggs. Finding his treat all gone, the fish thrashed his tail almost angrily and paced the perimeter of the bowl, giving Alexis as dirty a look as a fish can manage.

“Jeeze, you don’t have to be rude about it,” Alexis muttered, and opened the jar of betta food she had bought the week before on a whim. She dropped six pellets into the water and watched the fish consume the food in a matter of seconds. It looked up at her expectantly and she obligingly dropped another pinch of food in.

“If you keep eating like that, I’ll have to find two jobs! You be good while I’m gone.” Although she was reluctant to leave her new pet unattended, the search for a job was an unpleasant necessity, especially with a second mouth to feed. As of yet, Alexis hadn’t allowed herself to view the fish as anything special. With its pink colouring and affinity for betta food, this was obviously some new species of betta, bred to survive in harsher conditions. Alexis glanced back at the bowl one last time, turned off the light, and shut the door.

Several days after the birth of her new pet fish, Alexis found her new career as a fish-sitter as both mind-numbingly boring and oddly enthralling. To keep herself from going poor, she took a job at the corner store down the street, which allowed her to run home on breaks to check on her new “baby”. She found, surprisingly, that this little bundle of joy could be oddly expressive. She knew when he was hungry and could see on his face curiosity when she flashed new objects by the bowl or loneliness when she was gone for a particularly long time. Alexis decided to name her strange pet Eclipse, partially because she’s always been enchanted by the stellar phenomenon, but also because that was the brand of keyboard she owned, and she was terribly unoriginal with names.

One day, Alexis found herself wandering around a commercial area of Rosewood and decided to hit up the nearest pet store for some treats for Eclipse. Considering how expressive and intelligent the tiny fish was, she felt guilty feeding it such disinteresting pellets day after day. Perhaps some live brine shrimp would be a more enjoyable meal, Alexis thought, wandering through the aisles.

“Hi there, can I help you with something?” The male voice directly over Alexis’ shoulder startled her, causing her to drop the air pump she’d been fiddling with.

“Oh! Um, hi, I’m just looking for some supplies for my fish,” Alexis placed the pump back on the shelf and shifted the toys and treats she had in her arms. The sales associate had that slimy look that orientation videos drill into all salesmen, but something about him caused Alexis to stand on guard.

“What sort of fish are you buying for? If it’s a betta, we have a series of bowls with lids to prevent jumping. I don’t know if you’re aware, but bettas don’t require air pumps, regular water changes will do just fine. Now if you’re looking to spoil the little guy, we have a line of special betta treats in the next aisle over,” the man, named Julien as his little plastic nametag indicated, herded Alexis towards the fish supplies. He was very pushy and Alexis didn’t like it.

“You know what? I think I’m pretty good with what I have. Besides, I don’t know what kind of fish it is,” Alexis stood her ground and frowned at Julien, maliciously taking note of the acne scars covering his cheeks and chin.

“You don’t know what kind of fish it is?” Julien’s voice rose sharply. “Where did you get it from? What sort of pet store would sell a fish to such an irresponsible person that obviously had no interest in the sort of specialized care different breeds require?” He snorted, contempt dripping from every pore.

Alexis could feel the heat on her face and opened her mouth without thinking. “I didn’t buy him anywhere. I found him. He probably would have dried up on that beach if I hadn’t rescued him. So don’t give me this bullshit about irresponsibility.”

The man grabbed her arm suddenly, causing her to drop everything she’d been carrying. “What did you say? What beach?” he shook her slightly and his grip tightened, the look in his eyes frightening.

Alexis tore her arm free and started backing towards the door. “I’m done here,” she whispered. The last thing she saw before she left was Julien, if that was his real name, reaching for the telephone. And she still hadn’t bought Eclipse his treats.

It was sad. One of the oldest trees in the forest had been damaged and there was an angry, weeping scar carved deeply into its trunk. She tentatively reached towards the bark, fingers trembling and-felt the smooth metal of her ice cream spoon. Startled, she jerked her hand away and the bowl skittered across the table and onto the floor.

“Would you stop that?” Alexis snapped, glaring in Eclipse’s direction. The poor fish jumped right out of his bowl before darting to hide behind the plastic chest. He’d been getting bigger everyday and barely fit in his bowl, let alone behind the small decoration. Alexis laughed and softened her expression. Eclipse glanced at her balefully, which caused her to laugh more.

“I’m sorry, you goof,” Alexis said with a chuckle and flicked a small drop of ice cream into the bowl before cleaning up the mess. Eclipse rushed to gulp down the treat and looked up at Alexis, wriggling.

“You look like a puppy,” she stroked the top of the pink fish’s head and carried on with her cleaning. Alexis had given up on the thought that Eclipse was a simple betta. She knew that when she moved to Rosewood she would be closer to the Cambrian activity. Though she’d gone to Abyss beach that day with the intention of searching for an egg of her own, it was still difficult for her to accept that it was real. Alexis Gideon, parent and guardian of an alien life form.

Ever since that day at the pet shop, Alexis had been wary of the activity of strangers. She’d made a mistake and she was certain that the fanatical members of Pikaia’s Children knew of herself and of Eclipse. With strangers following her to work and back everyday, Alexis knew that she would have to contact the Jianfeng Institute, and soon. Before Eclipse grew too big to travel.

The focus of the dream flits from person to person. Upon waking, it will be impossible to remember any specific personalities, any real plot to it all. The threads are there, but the story jumps around so quickly that they must surely unravel.

A few impressions remain:

Descending from the great tree-villages to walk the earth for the very first time. Feet not made for ground sink into it as you struggle for balance. You've never been without a great and lethal drop to all sides, and when you look up at the trees above you feel vertigo for the first time in your life. You feel as though you might fall into the sky. Your great-toes rip into the earth as you try to anchor yourself. Losing balance completely, you pitch forward --

Now, ascension. You have reached the top of the canopy. With watery eyes, you gaze into the pure, unfiltered sunlight. Fierce gales of wind rip at your feathers and sting your bare face into numbness. The tree beneath you groans and shudders as it dances in the wind. Down below you could never hear the creaking of the trees' miles-long trunks in motion. Up here the sound fills the world. It seems like it should be broiling hot with all the sunlight, but you're too far up now. The air is thin and freezing. The sky is a dark and featureless blue. You've seen something that few have seen, but it's time to go back down. Regretfully, you turn and began the long journey down into the canopy and finally the understory. Home.

As you wake, you may feel a slight shortness of breath. Even compared to that fine rare atmosphere above the forest, Earth's sea-level air is lacking. The air is richer over there.

When you check on Eclipse's fish bowl, you'll see that he has grown.
