      • All posts must be written in character, but there is NO word count minimum.
      • Every IC post is a raffle ticket for the mystery predators!
      • Staff/NPC replies will occur every 24 hours OR when all participants have posted.
      • Only those characters who signed up can participate in this event.
      • You may use your character's abilities at any point during the roleplay! Make sure ability usage is bolded and you describe how you're using the ability to help you. Creativity is encouraged and rewarded!
-------- Sometimes staff will mention specific instances where an ability would offer a bonus to a roll. Otherwise the advantage an ability grants will be determined situationally.
-------- Abilities such as endure and mist have defined adventure usages. (Eg. the ability to enter places of extreme temperature for Endure, and being invisible to enemies for Mist)
      • Many of the NPCs in this game can be won! You are NOT required to keep the personality/genders/etc indicated if you win a character.
      • Any questions can be asked via PM to the mule or Bugghnrahk or in the #adventure-ooc channel of the discord.

Regarding Stats & Rolls

  • Periodically, skill checks will be required in order to hunt for clues, battle enemies, interact with NPCs, and traverse obstacles. All skill checks require a roll of 2d6 (two six-sided dice) + the relevant modifier.
  • Do not delete your posts! You may, however, edit them.
  • It is strongly preferred that you roll & write a post at the same time. If 24 hours have passed and you haven't written an IC post, your roll will be ignored.

  • All characters have 7 "hit points" total. Please keep track of your injuries in each post!
---- At 3 HP or below, they are badly wounded and will take a -1 to all their skill check rolls
---- At 1 HP they are severely wounded and exhausted and will take a -2 to all their skill check rolls
---- If your character hits "0" they are too wounded to continue in this adventure.

  • When you attack an enemy there are always chances for your character to be injured, so be careful! Sometimes diplomacy or fleeing is the safer option.
---- a successful roll (10-12) means the ENEMY loses a hit point
---- a partially successful roll (7-9) means both YOU and the ENEMY lose a hit point
---- a failed roll (1-6) means YOU lose a hit point

    "It's time."

"Are you certain? Homewood is still such a small drop of life in all of Vykeli. What if we don't have the population to support a large predator?"

"... these must be as big as we are..."

"It's time," Ajali snapped, silencing the twittering concerns around him. Others - Viltalta and Brightheart among them - stood firm behind Ajali. Some of these council members were so young, they'd grown up in a green world. Ajali remembered when most of this was dust. "We've waited decades, generations to do this. Vykeli has given gifts to dire rats because we aren't doing enough to help her. Our wanderers have discovered the Mistfruit Forest. It is time."

The quiet was uneasy, broken only by the gentle whisper of leaves in the wind. Ajali turned his gaze toward them and listened for Vykeli's voice to tell him what to do next.

"Brightheart," he said, turning to her. "Take a handful of your Lifebringers and the skulls to Mossmouth hill. We'll conduct the resurrections there tomorrow at dawn."

"So soon?" said Wanderlust, stepping forward with a tight expression. One of the few times the old fool decided to remain at Homewood rather than venturing to places unknown. "Surely all of Homewood would like to attend the ceremony?"

Ajali knew Wanderlust perfectly well and understood the purpose of the question. "Tell those close to you, those who are learning from you, if they wish to attend, but I won't deny the danger of this. We don't need half the noulicorns in Homewood exposed to a new predator their first day out of the metaphorical womb. Any further questions?"

The young ascendeds ruffled their wings but stayed silent. Those at Ajali's back kept their heads held high, prepared for whatever storm may come.

A young perlino buck raced through the Homewood, eyes white with fear. Blood splattered up his pale legs. "Help!" he cried. "Something terrible has happened!"

To those who stopped to listen to him, he gasped," My mentor - Penna Beetleshell - asked me to attend a resurrection, but I... I slept in!"

That hardly seemed enough of a reason for his panic, but he continued with shivery breath," I got to Mossmouth hill hours after I was meant to but when I arrived... everything was... everyone... the hill was covered in blood and everyone was gone. All I saw were a few... a few..."

He sobbed, trying to catch his breath, and shuddered out," Bones! Please, anyone who can help, please come with me to Mossmouth! I can't go back there alone..."

    ---

A handful of noulicorns - Indira, Sweetpea, Dryxel, Russet Fawn, Specterdust, Nereida, Cinder, Havoc, Owlheart, and Lady Cattleya - take the young fellow up on his request and make their way to Mossmouth Hill.

The hill is a steep incline swarmed with thick, bearded trees, who create a curtain of moss the party must push through in order to reach the summit. There, they see a horrific sight. Just as a the young perlino buck stated, the grass is covered in blood and not a single noulicorn is to be found.

"I don't know what they were resurrecting..." said the buck. "I know we'd recently found some familiar bones, but this... this is bad."

    Quote:

Investigate the Crime Scene to determine what happened!
    Roll 2d6 + WIT modifier.

    1-6 = failure
7-9 = partial success (1 point toward buck)
10-12 = success! (2 points toward the buck)

Whoever discovers the most clues (that is, whoever helps answer his questions) will win the burnt rose perlino buck! (If you wish to opt out of winning him, please state so in your first post.)

Calelha had not received an invitation to the resurrection ceremony this morning. She'd heard about it - noulicorns always talked - but she hadn't known very much about it. And she was a nosy noul (especially when it came to the lifebringers), but she knew not to go where she hadn't been invited.

She expected to hear more about it, though, so she'd been hovering where she knew all the best gossip usually traveled. The panicking buck that'd raced through this clearing was certainly not what she'd expected today, though of course in Vykeli all sorts of accidents were wont to happen eventually. The name Penna Beetleshell and the mention of a resurrection, though, had her ears flicking back. What had...?

"I'll go ahead," she decided. "I'm certain others will want to help, though. We'll figure it out, noulja." That was how the Homewood worked, after all.

She considered, briefly, asking her sister to come with - but while blood and bones were things any Vivify worth their salt had to deal with eventually, this all seemed a little grisly for Calelha's tastes. Besides, she could at least get an idea of what had happened, and then come back to consult her dear twin.

She arrived at the hill on her own, wincing as the moss scratched inelegantly against her coat. Mossmouth Hill was not exactly the most friendly place for a resurrection - what had been wrong with Brightheart's Grove? That was where all the most recent ceremonies had been held, as far as Cattleya was aware. With some effort, she pushed a path through the moss, in case anyone wanted to follow, though perhaps it wouldn't suit a buck. It didn't matter; she was too concerned about - about -

It really was bloody here. What had happened? Resurrection ceremonies were always well-attended; Cattleya could not possibly imagine what had caused this sort of carnage. Even a catbeast would have struggled...and it wouldn't have approached so many noulicorns to resurrect, anyway.

The buck and the rest of the party he'd gathered were not too far behind, fortunately. Cattleya could understand why he hadn't wanted to proceed without company, and she was glad to hear familiar hoofsteps.

She pushed forward to examine the grass with worry, checking for tracks. Someone must have run away from here, tracking blood in their wake, and she hoped they were hooved...

Cinder didn't have to think twice. The short-haired buck had said some help was needed, and she'd volunteered without a second thought. No pause to consider how horrific the sight might be. When they reached the summit, she felt her eyes widen at the carnage before her. What... could have done this?

But before a wave of faintness could overwhelm her, she steeled herself. All business. Focus, she thought, taking a breath as she began to pick through the leftovers of the scene. Something had to be here.

Dryxel look at the poor fearful perlino it was clear by his face that something horrify had happened. The blood stains on the perlino's pelt was evidence enough for Dryxel. In breathless heaves the perlino tried to explain what had happened but it was really coming out as most nonsense. One thing Dryxel did understand was the plea for help. That was something he could do.

A small group had formed and that made Dryxel proud of his kind. It was true should of love how they could quickly come together in an hour of need. Pushing through the moss curtain Dryxel is a little more then horrified at what he sees. Blood covered all the grass it was no wonder the perlino was carrying some on his pelt. But there was no sign of a noul only the blood stains. With this much blood..." Dryxel thought but did not finish. There was always hope after all they were living prof of hope for Vykeli.

With a small sigh Dryxel moved around the summit of Mossmouth hill. The needed to find clues or really anything to help then on this dangerous quest.

A ressurection? bones? and a blood splattered young buck? This had Owlheart instantly on alert and very curious, just what the heck had happened? She snorted and stamped a hoof impatiently as a small group gathered to agree to help the buck.

She was itching to get to the bottom of the mystery by the time they reached the curtain of moss but she hadn't quite been prepared for the sight "You weren't kidding" she muttered to herself before turning to the other Nouls. "This was no familiar.... there should be bodies.... where are the bodies?" she said more quietly. ears flicking, fur prickling. She was on edge but her hooves were sharp and her legs strong if needed, she wasn't afraid to keep going, if they weren't dead, they could be somewhere in severe need of help, judging from the sheer amount of blood on the ground.

She tried to sniff around but the air was heavy with the metallic tang of the blood "We shouldn't move around too much" she said, noting others were looking for tracks, she did the same but knew enough that too much tramping about and they'd be following themselves instead of whatever did......this.

It had seemed but a blink of an eye when Nereida returned from the tree bearing knowledge of water within. Her vision had definitely taught her many things, especially how Vykeli's water running throughout pumping through her veins. Now when she took her daily walks her magic could sense so much more be it a pattern, change, or something out of the ordinary. As she took one of her strolls taking mental notes she was approached by a young perilino buck. Turning her ears toward him she let the youth ramble on about the situation at hand. Being more scholarly than other nouls she wasn't cruel to not listen, rather she was taking those mental notes figuring things out. His coat speckled with sweat alerted her as well as his eyes; something horrific had occurred. She already saw the blood on his legs which was a definite sign that his story along with her suspicions was spot on.

So, without haste, she followed him to that very hill knowing full well what would reveal itself.

Arriving at the scene made her own flesh shiver because it was purely was horrific to witness. Never had Nereida seen so much blood from her own kind. One could have visualized the description of being painted, no dumped on the ground. This surreal vision would have caused any noul to panic in fear. Nereida, though was remaining calm as she surveyed the area trying to piece things together, options that made sense. While the blood was splattered along with the blades of grass she opted to seek answers trailing away from the carnage before her. There had to be at least one, perhaps two survivors that somehow could have escaped while the others were laid to rest within Vykelli's sanctuary. Swiveling her ears she noted that more nouls were also here making their own observations which the youth must have summoned for help.

This turn of events being the beginning could turn toward or against all of them if these newly resurrected creatures were still looming leaving them all be in danger. Though it wasn't her preferred deliberation, this forming party might want to be more cautious of what was roaming around them. Flicking another ear she chose to move along the other edges of the scene to not disturb the blood that possibly dotted a trail of a possible survivor. If there were any clues she hoped to find them before the danger found them.

Indira had been preparing to leave Homewood and return to the Barrens, with Aisling and, of course, Fleet. Their bags were packed, and they were going to head out at sundown. Spend a little time in the wasteland, and then head to Grandfather Tree for Aisling. She had been snooping around a merchant looking for an adequate gift to give to Aisling after she received her calling, when she heard to commotion.

Screaming and calling like this rarely happened in Homewood. And when it did, it was typically over silly things that could easily be resolved. But this sounded different. Indira approached the buck, and listened. And observed. No, this wasn't a normal day at all. She glanced at Fleet, "Run. Tell Aisling to see a safe, defensible place. Something has happened, I have to investigate. Meet me back at Mossmouth. And be careful Fleet." The jackhop didn't need to be told twice. She was gone in a flash.

Indira took off towards Mossmouth, this didn't seem like a time to go slowly. She noted a handful of others also heeding to call for help. Hopefully they were useful Nouls, that had experience with situations involving actual danger.

Upon arrival, Indira was shocked. The air had a coppery tang to it, and blood had permeated the ground. As she pushed through the curtain of moss it was clear that something horrific had happened here. "What did this idiots resurrect?" Her voice was nearly a growl.

This was exactly what she imaged the idiotic council doing. Instead of focusing on healing Vykeli, expanding Homewood and finding new places they went and released some unknown terror. If this was a familiar, clearly they had selected the wrong bones. But could a familiar create a scene like this? She didn't think so.

Fleet emerged from the mossy curtain, nearly out of breath, and puffing hard. Indira extended a leg, giving the jackhop a purchase to scramble up onto her back from. "Do not leave my back, Fleet. Whatever has happened here is clearly dangerous."

Her eyes scanned for more movement, but mostly what she saw was other Noulicorns, stunned by the scene. Her ears registered Owlheart. "I don't think this was a familiar, noulja. I think the idiots have made a grave error, and resurrected something best left as just bones."

"We should, as you said, be careful about where we are walking. But not too careful. I think time is of the essence. Too much mincing around and I fear this scene will be repeated elsewhere."

Specterdust happened to be in the main hub of Homewood today. There wasn’t much to do at her new HQ and she contemplated bartering for supplies or looking to see if anyone needed assistance. A pale buck came bleating into Homewood in quite the panic and it drew tiny Specter’s ears towards the commotion. She picked her way through the crowd of nouls gathering and caught sight of the frantic young buck.

“Poor dear,” she mumbled under her breath. Kevin’s feathers brushed against her legs as he stood close by, he didn’t want to be stepped on by the many nouls present.

    “What’s happening,” he inquired quietly.

“Dunno. Something bad happened that the buck is too freaked out to properly say. He’s looking for help.”

    “We go?”

Specterdust pushed through the remaining nouls, Kevin at her heels. She offered to go with the buck, among several others, to investigate what happened at this resurrection. Specterdust had been fascinated by the vivify gifted nouls. She’d been disappointed to not be blessed with the gift but she didn’t allow it to hinder her abilities to help those in need.

Climbing the steel hill was a work out but Specterdust relished any challenge thrown her way. Kevin hopped along, waiting for her to reach him before continuing on. Specterdust couldn’t help but glance at those making the trip up the hill. She didn’t recognize anyone except, wait a minute. Specter paused in her ascent to the top. One of the bucks looked familiar, it had been some time but she recognized him from when she was a new apprentice, in the ruins. Dryxel? When she got a moment, she’d go and say hello but first they had important business to attend.

The moss hanging from the trees tickled Specter and she couldn’t help but giggle. It reminded her of the lichen that grew on Mielikki’s jaw. Specterdust wondered if Mielikki would have liked to see these, but put it out of her mind as she summited the hill. Splashes of red covered the open space and filled Specterdust’s vision. She tentatively moved around it, she was shocked by the amount in the clearing and she looked to the other nouls.

Where were the bodies? What did this? Kevin made a nervous sound in his throat and fluffed up his feathers. Specter wrinkled her nose and decided to not move closer to the worst of it. Instead she moved along the perimeter, looking for signs of whoever it was leaving the scene.

Sweetpea had an unfortunate feeling in her gut as they approached Mossmouth hill. It was hard not to, after the fuss that the buck had created. But no amount of trepidation in the world would have prepared her for the sight that greeted them. She'd never seen so much blood before. She wouldn't mind if she'd never had. It slicked the grass down and shone tauntingly in the light that peeked through the bearded trees.

She turned her head away to collect herself, and listened to Indira as she spoke. "If it wasn't a familiar, what was it? What would be so violent and destructive?"

She didn't really want an answer, honestly, but she asked it because she was supposed to. She took a deep breath and looked at the blood again, calmer. "Maybe if we look at the blood pattern, we can determine a direction? I'm not super sure how to do that, but it can't be too difficult if we work together."

Havoc had silently followed the group, unsure why he was even compelled to assist the young distressed noul. He peered past the rest as they arrived at the clearing, and was shocked at the violent scene. Part of him had thought maybe the whole thing was a wild overreaction, to be honest.

The others seemed to be discussing and or looking for clues. Havoc kind of wanted to just nope on out back down the hill and find a soft pile of grass to nap in. Could he pretend he hadn't seen? No? Damn. He flicked his ears, agreeing with the doe's comment that they should be careful, but time was definitely wasting. And if he left, he would be looking over his shoulder in fear forever, so he figured he might as well face whatever new danger this was.

Sticking to the edges, as others were, he tried to make sense of signs. He looked at the spatters, trying not to step on any of the mess while he examined the surrounding moss and leaves. It felt like this was done by something large, and large things tend to leave trails.

Russet Fawn had been out hunting for certain herbs and seeds that were popping up all over Homewood. She was carrying a couple saddle bags as well as having a very active Jack Hop bounding about her hooves. Ears twitching to the sounds of someone shouting about something. She wasn't too sure what was going on, but she glanced down at Talltale whom had stopped as well and looked in the same direction.

"Something seems to have happened? She said to the jack hop as he vaulted to her back.

"Sounds like something bad happened. We should check it out." Talltale said as the botanic adept turned and headed towards the commotion.

When they reached the hill, Fawn stopped dead in her tracks as the taint of red caught her attention. Something bad had happened here and the plants were covered in it. Shaking her head, the skin over her withers flickered slightly in the motion. Talltale looked out over Fawn's shoulder towards the mess. Something big had done this and with a lot of sharp teeth.

"What were these higher mucks doing? Trying to cause everyone's death?" he asked not really knowing quite what had been brought back to life.

Fawn didn't want to say anything as she drew closer to the rest that had come to the calling. Seems that there were a bunch there, she noticed a few others were also adepts. Two were also Botanics like herself. There were others there, apprentices and giftless nouls. She wasn't sure which was which, magic was a hidden thing after all.

"Does anyone know what exactly was being brought back to life?" she asked looking towards a lilac doe whom was blanketed in blue and carrying what looked like a jar of water.

The perlino buck hurries over and lets out a cry of anguish,” That’s my mentor’s feather! That’s from Beetleshell! He must be hurt… or…” the buck fretted. “Maybe he pulled it out on purpose, maybe he’s leaving us clues!”

That seemed like an optimistic stretch, but the poor buck was half wild with dismay.

    Owlheart

Owlheart spots something white laying half out of the brush at the edge of the clearing. On closer inspection, she earns the answer to some of her questions.

It’s a bone. A leg bone from a noulicorn, and it’s been bitten clean in half! Whatever did this must have jaws of steel. There are sharp tooth marks dragged across the surface of the bone and it’s been picked completely clean.

Did she really want to know where the bodies went?

    Nereida

Travelling at the tree line near the edges of the scene, Nereida is in a great position to spot something strange in the bark of a tall, moss covered redwood on the SOUTH side of the hill.

There are claw marks on it! Starting at eye-height and going up to six or seven feet. The bark of the tree has been scratched so badly some of the white inner pulp has been revealed.

It doesn’t seem like there are any claw marks on the other trees nearby. Just this one. Strange.

    Indira

No mincing about for Indira! As she makes her way around the summit a squeak catches her attention. It’s coming from somewhere above her head, to the SOUTH side of the hill. Something is hiding in the trees! But which one?

    Specterdust

Specterdust’s examination of the perimeter unfortunately leaves her empty handed. She spots several splatters of blood hedging into the foliage, but none of it seems to lead to any additional clues.

    Sweetpea

Everything is soaked in so much blood it’s difficult to discern a pattern. It all seems… chaotic. But Sweetpea’s keen eyes lead her to notice a few spare droplets that spread out from the main area, heading down the WEST side of the hill. Did someone escape?

    Havoc

Havoc had a good idea, sticking to the edges of the mess in search of a trail.

He spots indentations in the grass near the WEST side of the hill.

Hoofprints! Some of them are definitely dainty cloven noulicorn tracks, but there are others, larger prints.

The prints still have the rounded mark of hooves, but there appears to be four toes in these ones! At least… they’re still hooves? They appear to head DOWN the hill from here.

    Russet Fawn

The shaken perlino buck pipes up with a nervous answer. “My mentor, that is penna Beetleshell, told me it was time to resurrect something… bigger. Something like us. Not just a familiar this time. He said Electus Ajali earned the council’s vote.

“But Electus Ajali wasn’t coming to the resurrection… I don’t… I don’t remember exactly where he was supposed to be today, but he might know more about this. I think… I think maybe he’s at Greenstone Plateau out EAST of here. But… but do we have time to track him down?”

It looks like some clues have been spotted!

You can examine EAST or SOUTH clues further with another roll of 2d6 + WIT! It seems like a few of these clues are definitely leading to something.

    OR

You can ask the young buck more questions! He’s pretty shaken up, though, so you’ll need to roll 2d6 + CHARM to get him to talk.
