Introduction

This topic focuses on using the items to create a senshi look. There is no set rules for this, but this guide offers some ideas.

((If you are trying to develop a character for a competition, it is suggested you consult resources in addition to this guide.))

In the series, the most consistent element for a Sailor Fuku is the "sailor" collar. However no element is necessary but combining familiar elements such as the collar, brooch, tiara, front and rear bows, skirts, the leotard-esque bodice (to which I refer to as "Bodice Effect") in different ways can help you achieve a Sailor Senshi look. While this guide may heavily favor the series characters, it is also geared toward helping you create your own Original Character Senshi as well. (Like my own Sailor Isle De Gambino Cosplay whee ).

While we start with the official items, by no means feel limited to them. However, you might want to look these over first just so you know what's out there. All of these items have pros & cons and the idea of this guide is to create uniforms in more than one way. Still, these official items offer a plethora of options and being familiar with them has helped me search for alternatives to substitute or even enhance an outfit. That's what we'll explore in the rest of this guide.

I by no means came up with these ideas overnight and it took watching what other cosplayers are doing with the outfits. After you commence with this guide, please see our other threads for additional options, such as shoes for your senshi*.

*...when we have shoe options up, of course! Sorry, getting there!

~The most important thing is to have fun with your cosplay!~

Official Items

These items closely reflect the Sailor Moon Series in either similiar look, purposeful parody, or even directly referencing the series. The first items in particular are good for the "Odango" hair, hair clips, and tiaras. Also I do not re-list the items below if they have a rear-bow, etc.

Note that these items are most often multi-purpose, so I recommend at least looking at them. I personally try to use a single item rather than multiples of the same to achieve the same look: it's a bit more budget friendly.

*Please note not all official items are in this post. Please refer to the main thread in Guides and Resources for the complete list.

There's a direct reference to Usagi in all of this item. There is even 'Odango' Hair.

Moonlight Series:

I'll admit these items are a little harder to work with.
I usually don't include them in my designs, or try to use the
"oshioki yo/I'll punish you" pose on one of my other designs.

These are your best bet in getting the Odango Hair, hair clips, tiaras, Heart Locket (SM:S) looks.

User ImageMagical Girl
Great for a scepter, an exaggerated red back bow, a chest bow with brooch,
and other details. This was the first item of these special magical girl items,
and it was so popular gloves and color variations followed.

A more recent MC release. A "hidden" pose reveals the iconic Super Sailor
Moon sleeves. The top layers over items but under other bow items, so it is a
versatile piece worth the higher price tag.

Bodice Effect: Base Layer Suggestions

The official items are not the only way to build a bodice. There are several ways. With so many layering options, it can be confusing, and I try to explain with each step.

You might opt not to use a base layer, especially if you are using the Serafuku items. However, all of these options in this post are actually classified as tops in the avatar system. Their layering acts a little different depending on what you're equipping with each of them. Some skirts will remove the dress and some won't. Experimentation is necessary and each suggestion has pros and cons.

Cheerleader Dresses

User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser Image

You'll have to layer over these dresses for a Bodice Effect.
But they have quite the cute ruffle skirt.
Also, they have unique detail the other dresses do not.
Unfortunately skirts and bloomers de-equip them.

Tennis Dresses
User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser Image

These don't quite have the Bodice Effect and the skirts do not have much ruffle.
However, despite being dresses, they act like more tops, making them layering friendly. Skirts seem to layer underneath them.

Ice Champion Glitter Dresses
User ImageUser ImageUser Image

Bodice effect, but the skirts aren't as easy to work with.

gaia_star Ice Champion Shimmer Dresses
User ImageUser ImageUser Image

Why are there only three of Shimmer Dresses?
They are splendid, and work like tops rather than a full dress, skirts layer underneath the built in ruffle.
Layering heaven and they have the "Bodice Effect" built in!!!

Another suggestion: UpsideDown Tops
User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser Image
Suggestion by Meduzi Algola.
Layer these with a bodice, and the shoulders will retain the color.
Will still layer with the ice champion top.

Bodice Effect: Using Fuku Items

These are the most familiar basic pieces for creating a look. While these pieces alone will not have the bodice effect they can be layered to create that look.

Bodice Effect: More Middle Layer Suggestions

There are other ways of getting a cute skirt than the Serafuku.

Wood Elf Skirts:
User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser Image

Don't let the name fool you.
These skirts layer nicely with bloomers below and the Champion Dresses.
(See example below) Super and Eternal forms? Yes please!

Bitty Bloomers:

The ruffle works really well to look like an additional layer of skirt.
Use contrasting colors for more prominent affect.

Here's an example of how the layering can work for you.

Bodice Effect: Outer Layering

There are a few items that create the bodice shape quite easily.

User ImageBlushing Bride's Embroidered Bodice

Layers like a top. Utopia's suggestion.

The corset is very useful in creating the bodice shape of a uniform. Layers like a coat. Grade A senshi gear.

User ImageBiancamella
Biancamella and it's sister variations has a bodice, and a pretty shoulder pose that works well for Princess Serenity and other Senshi uniforms.

Other Layering Suggestions

These are a combination of suggestions by Castle Town!
Castle Town

Team Uniform Skirts
User ImageUser Image User ImageUser ImageUser Image

Durem: Moon, Mars; Golden: Venus; Gambino: Mercury, Neptune.

The skirts from the team uniforms actually layer under most other skirts.
They're also great for shortening a certain shirt.
They give the effect of a back bow that looks accurate to the characters.
Not only that but when you turn around it's an actual... back bow.

The skirts from the uniforms have a shortening effect with any shirt or dress on gaia.
I personally like using this pose from

or User ImageReve Marin

When used with the skirts it should look like this.

From there, the angelic lace corset and any serafuku scarf should do the rest. :')
Oh and don't forget to add another skirt on top of it

User ImagePrince of the Sea has a cape pose that works for sailor moon.
It also layers with the serafukus to go that extra mile.
De-equips the Mahou Shoujo Brooch.

Adding a Rear Bow: Options
Not all senshi have front or rear bows, but if you like a rear bow, here's what Gaia has to offer.

Butt Bows:
User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser Image

Queen of Cups Items:
User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser Image
The latter two are available in Loyal's Bazaar. (Contributed by Sailor Seren).

User ImageKottan Bell
The only black rear bow I know of. There's a more pixie wing-like option, too.

User ImageBeta Centauri
For Super Sailor Moon's rear bow (also good for Princess dress).

User ImageSDPlus Alpha Centauri
For Super Sailor Moon's rear bow (also good for Princess dress). Meduzi Algola's Suggestion.

User ImageRed Rascal
A new GoFusion Item, it offers another red bow option.

User ImageCandy Pop Dancer
Has a nice bow that works for Sailor Jupiter's rear bow. Suggestion by Castle Town. Might also work for Chibi Moon.

Adding a Front Bow and Brooch

Serafuku Bows (Chest):

Brooch Options

User ImageGambino's Golden TreasuresUser ImageGambino's Platinum Treasures
The brooch works well to set your cosplay apart, Castle Town's suggestion.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

User ImageRuby Pendant
Option for a red brooch. The necklace from it layers over the bows. It also makes a nice weapon for Pluto. Suggestion from Castle Town.

User ImageAngelic Pendant
For Saturn's Locket, Meduzi Algola's suggestion. (See cheaper locket options in Accessories)

User ImageMahou Shoujo Brooch
A recent item grant, so it is fairly inexpensive. Layers over pretty much
everything, a great brooch choice.

Birthstone Necklaces
User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser Image

While not brooches, these items could work toward creating a brooch or even the sailor top effect.

Closing Notes

Phew! So as you see, there's no one specific way to create a senshi outfit. From here, however, please consult the other guides for gloves, shoes, and pretty much everything else! Also, if you find something great for your own cosplay, please feel free to suggest it!

Have fun Sailor Senshi!
