Wasa stretched and closed her fingers in the early dawn hours, trying to drive some of the cold from her joints. Mornings were always difficult for her. It was a miserable state of affairs to awake with a mind so refreshed but a body wanting nothing more to stay in the warmth and comfort of a bed. Winter weather didn't help, making her joints stiff and her breath fog up the lenses of her glasses. Today, thermoses of tea and coffee took the place of icy beers in her cooler.

The previous venture had been uneventful, just as she predicted, but that didn't make the occasional bob or jingle of her fishing pole any less exciting. Her design ensured the optimum amount of variation in line length and depth, meaning sometimes the rod came to life all its own, sending tiny weights down the wire or sometimes reeling it in so close that she could just make out the outline of the soul bottle below the water. This meant there were times her heart leapt into her chest, thinking perhaps something had taken hold of her line.

Truth was, she wasn't exactly sure what would happen if something got a hold of her line. Would there be a struggle, some sort of battle between her and the caught soul? She had already imagined herself on her feet, hauling in the line and then giving it slack until the poor creature could fight no longer. Would the bottle work its sciencey-magic only then? Or was there the chance that all it would take was a lingering touch for the bottle to suck in its guest without the artist ever knowing.

It was for this reason that Wasa resolved not to pull up her line until it was time. Today, she would stand watch with the pole until high noon, allowing her amble time to rest up for the prospect of a very long night. Crumbs gathered up in the folds of her skirt as she snacked on a scone, attracting the first of what would be many hungry gulls. She picked up a corner at her knee and gave it a flick, sending the morsels down through the cracks in the dock. Soon the water came alive with circles of ripples as tiny fish grazed the water's surface. "Any of you interested in a project with me?" Wasa huffed through a little smirk as she stretched her stiff fingers once more. She really wasn't meant for mornings.

Wasa wasn't the only one with an aversion to mornings. Cold ones, at least. Melisande burrowed deeper into the white shearling jacket that she'd bought from Vi's second hand shop, breath curling over the thick fan of the collar. Her wings were held tight against her back, having been worked gently through the slits that the Muse herself had added. Her healing wing was still wrapped in a bit of wide lace towards the base, though at this point it was largely unnecessary.

A large sling bag weighed the Sigel down, purple ribbon nearly brushing the dock as she made her way down towards the artist. "I'm sorry I'm late." Pasha said, leaning down to give the woman a cordial kiss on the cheek.

"Any nibbles?" She set her bag down with a thump, and warmed her hands with a quick rub.

"Yes, but just visitors." She pointed to the water where the shadow of her hand made the tiny little fishes scatter. "Nothing on the line" She reached into her pack and pulled out a folded blanket to drop on the dock beside her. Even though the Sigel never touched the ground per say, it made sense to her that it would be more comfortable and dignified to hover over a bit of padding than whatever dirt and dampness happened to be about. "Tea?"

Melisande brightened considerably at the offer of tea, and 'settled' down over the proffered blanket. "Please! Thank you."

She peered down into the water as Wasabi poured her tea, and waved the shadow of her own hand curiously over the surface of the water to the same result. "I can see you made your own pole..." The Muse commented as she accepted the tea with a grateful nod. "How does it work? It looks...complicated."

Pasha was surprisingly at ease with the woman, especially considering her recent aversion to all things human. But then, she'd never considered Wasa a standard representative of her species. The artist was a bit of a phenomenon in and of herself, as evidenced by the strange contraption she held so diligently over the water.

"Well, you see..." Wasa went to move her hands up into the air to demonstrate then quickly remembered where they needed to be. "The ocean, it has levels." She held her hand up at one level then another. "And some things live in one part and some in others, so if I want to tempt everything in the sea, I have to be able to reach all places, so..." She looped her finger into one of the many places where the line threaded in and out of pulleys and whirly-gigs. "This takes care of all that for me. Reels it in, lets it out... all that random stuff." She moved it just in time to let the gears set off another chain reaction. "I think it might also tell time... I'm not sure."

Melisande paused, in the middle of blowing steam from the surface of her tea. Her eyes slid along loops and pulleys and doodads and whatchamacallits, and pale brows climbed steadily upward. It probably did tell time.

She took another sip, and leaned forward to peer into the water again. "How do you know when you catch something, if it moves on its own?" Sometimes, she regretted asking Wasa questions, but her curiosity got the best of her. Pasha tucked a few curls behind her ear and settled back again with her tea, the tip of her nose turning a light pink.

"That I, uh... I'm not sure." She gave the pole a little shake as the gears settled. "Usually you feel like, a sharp jerk when something is on the line but I don't know if this works this way. I'll probably won't know until I reel it in." She shrugged. "Not expecting to catch anything today anyways, but gotta let it do its thing." She turned her head away from the water for the first time and smiled at the Raevan. "Which is why I'm happy to have your company."

The happy expression was fleeting, flitting away from her face as quick as those little fish under the dock. "Your wing. What happened?"

Melisande studied Wasa's face for a few long moments before responding. "It was a misunderstanding. Someone thought they knew what was best for me. They were wrong." It wasn't the first time she'd tried to explain it to someone, and it wasn't getting any easier. Pasha lowered her eyes to her tea and took another little sip before changing the subject.

"But I'm happy to be here. Thank you...for inviting me. So, are you excited? I know this part is..." What was a delicate way to put it? "...up to fate. But have you prepared? Do you have a room, and clothes?" Pasha smiled at the idea of what kind of a room the Artist would create for someone. A nursery complete with crib and strange overhead mobile?

"People are going to have to stop doing that." The artist mused as the line shivered to a rest. She wasn't the prying type and she certainly didn't like being asked to explain herself twice (it was hard enough trying to do it once) so she wasn't about to ask it of Pasha.

"A room? I, ah..." She tilted her head to direct her gaze away from the water so she could think. "There are lots of rooms he or she could, uh..." Her lips scrunched up in a little frown. "You know... I haven't. I suppose I just figured he, she-er... it would just, um, choose." That's how it always seemed to go with her guests. But, then again, this Raevan was going to be more than a guest, wasn't it? She found herself wondering if Aki had prepared a room for Pasha...

Melisande relaxed as it became clear Wasa wasn't going to push her for the details. The Artist was good like that...she liked her details in things, like inked lines, toothed gears, and birdseed. "That's a nice way to do it!" Pasha took another sip of her tea, and watched the line stretch a bit into deeper waters.

"I didn't pick the room, but I did get to pick what I put in it. There was a bed, and curtains, and towels in the bathroom all waiting." It was amazing how she could talk about Aki's house and Aki's choices all without saying the woman's name. "I don't suppose you have a preference between boy or girl?" Melisande's cheeks colored for no apparent reason.

Towels. Wasa was pretty sure she had a guest towel. Somewhere. "I suppose there is a little more preparing I can do." She smiled at the muse, grateful for the advice. She was quite good at that. Towels, sheets, maybe she could even pull the dust covers off some of the furniture just to make the options look a little cozier.

There was a light pause as she considered Pasha's question. "I suppose once I decided to leave it all up to chance, I stopped worrying about the whole boy-girl thing. I mean, it will be what it will be. But... if I were to say..." She pursed her lips "I'm not sure what I would do with a boy." Once she said it, more and more realizations came to light in her head. What was the last time a boy stayed at her house? No doubt there were boys there, what with the faeries and all, but when was the last time she washed a pair of jeans?

Melisande brightened with the conversation, finishing her tea and setting the cup near the thermos as she leaned forward. "I can alter some clothes for you, if you'd like? I help Vi in her clothing store...I can pick out a selection! As a gift!"

The idea was exciting for Pasha, and her wings fluffed pleasantly. It only hurt a little. "I can help with figuring out what your Raevan eats, as well. It's important to get it right, and it's not always obvious." The Muse settled her hand on Wasa's arm, and whether it was her own belief or a little accidental Inspiration, her words were bright with confidence.

"You're going to be a wonderful Guardian."

Her lips parted, about to give a quick reply but in a rare moment of true self awareness she swallowed it at the last moment. And you will make a great big sister.... Despite the stumble, the heart of Pasha's sentiment still hummed pleasantly in her ears. She could be a good guardian.

"That's very kind of you. I bet you already know a hundred things I haven't thought of." She spared a hand to pat the top of hers. Left to her own devices, Wasa probably would have bought, like, at least 3 pairs of pants. "I'll always welcome your advice."

Melisande blushed again, and leaned forward for the thermos...refilling her tea and making sure Wasa had a full cup as well. "I don't know a lot about the others, actually. I don't...have many friends. But the ones I do have..."

The color high in Pasha's cheeks spoke volumes, even though the Muse was suddenly at a loss for words. "Do you have any plans for Christmas?" She handed over the cup, and reclaimed her own, warming her pale hands. "We could get a little hat for your bottle, if it's still around."

She took a sip, licking at her scalded lips for a moment before hazarding a second. "Or for your essence vial. Jar. What is it, again?"

"Santa hat" Wasa's mouth gaped with a happy little gasp. "That would be the best. And the jar could have little antlers!" She tapped her feet on the dock excitedly and then took a sip of her own tea with a nod. "I think I am doing that for Christmas. I don't suppose, I mean, unless you have plans with your friends..." Those same tapping feet pointed toe to toe. "I have a guest room...es." It had been a long time since she had reason to celebrate Christmas. It would be fun to do a little decoration for the muse's sake.
