Remus Lupin

Slowly working his way through the rows of shelves, Remus Lupin concentrated on the hunt at hand. He had long ago finished his book shopping for the up and coming year. All his text books were in order and the rest of his supplies were packed away in his trunk. Now, he was merely on a hunt for a specific text. He'd been trying to track it down all summer and he was so close. He could feel it in his bones. And no, it wasn't left over from the last full moon.

The teen shifted to the side a small bit, scanning the shelf before him with a golden brown gaze. His eyes narrowed slightly. He knew it was here. It had to be. But where was it?

Lily walked through the doors of Flourish and Blotts. She had gotten most of her books the week before, including her potions book. In fact, she was almost through with her potions book from all the practicing at home. Her parents figured that, because it wasn't waving a wand and casting a spell that it wasn't considered breaking the rules of no magic around Muggles. Of course, it only made her sister hate her more. She had tried to reason with Petunia a number of times, but, at last, she didn't succeed.

It was only after she had found the last two books she needed that she saw Remus Lupin wandering the shelves, appearing to be looking for something rather important. While Lily had a huge problem with Sirius Black and James Potter, Lily actually was quite fond of Remus. She smiled slightly and walked over to him. "Well, hello, Remus. I would have thought that you would have had all of your text books already?" she said, her smile still a bit evident. She liked to smile when talking to her friends... even if she didn't get why he ever hung out with some of his other friends.

Extreme Curses and How to Counter Them. No, that wasn't it. Everlasting Sweets and Where to Find Them. A snort as Remus scanned past that one. Honestly, it shouldn't be this hard to find a simple book! He had on good word that it was here. After all, he'd checked with the shop owners. It didn't help, however, that it appeared as if a child had gone through and messed with the alphabetization on the shelves.

He gave a frustrated sigh, grumbling as he mentally cursed whoever had organized these shelves. It was only when a familiar voice cut through his search that he yelped and straightened up.

Turning, he found Lily Evans beside him, her familiar smile in place. He'd been so absorbed in his own thoughts he hadn't heard her coming. Slowly, he calmed and offered a sheepish smile. "Lily. It's good to see you." He greeted, rubbing the back of his head slightly. "As for the text books they're taken care of. as I'm guessing yours are as well?" It honestly wouldn't surprise him if she were to become a prefect next year. He'd even place money on it with how responsible the other had always been.

Lily was honestly quite startled when she heard a small yelp come out of Remus's lips. She had almost considered mentioning it, but she decided against it. Keep conversation pleasant, that was always the best policy. And that meant no mention of James or Sirius, and definitely don't do anything that might make him upset... not that she had managed the one time she had tried.

When he asked her if she had hers yet, she shrugged, and said, "They were sold out of two of them when I came last. So I had to come back and get them." It was a simple enough statement at that. And she knew that her parents would be here shortly. They still insisted on coming with her to Diagon Alley. Probably because it was so unlike Muggle streets. They were currently at Gringotts, exchanging Muggle money for galleons and sickles.

Remus Lupin

Remus immediately recognized the two books and nodded. "Ah, yes. They ran out of those pretty quickly, I noticed." He glanced at the shelves before him and hummed. Where was that book?

He mentally shrugged off the thought and turned back to his fellow student. "How was your summer holiday?" he asked, making sure to keep on neutral topics long enough to ease back into the easy going discussions he was used to. Some of his best debates of theory had been with Lily and he enjoyed them as much as he enjoyed the oddity of his three closest friends. Though, he mused, he could likely count Lily amongst his close friends. The only thing really stopping them spending more time together was her relationship - or lack there of - with James Potter.

Alyssa walked into the store, the bell sounding up above her head. She was so excited to be getting back to Hogwarts. In fact no one but her could be happier. She was excited about everything; the new classes she was going to take, getting a brand new uniform, and also James Potter. She had always admired James from afar since her first year at Hogwarts and she was eager to see him again.

As she was browsing through the book shelves picking out her new text books two familiar faces caught her eye. She knew them as acquaintances, but it didn't hurt to be friendly. Besides she needed to be friends with people in the Gryffindor house so that she could get closer to James and hopefully actually have a conversation with him.

"Hi guys, long time no see." She said with a friendly smile. "Excited about the new year?" She asked hugging a text book to her chest hoping they wouldn't think she was being a little too friendly.

Lily nodded when Remus said that they ran out of those two books fairly quickly. It was very much true, after all. Of course, when he asked her how her summer holiday went, she shrugged, and said, "Well, truthfully, it could have been better. My sister isn't as... ah... thrilled about me being a witch as my parents are." Sure, that was saying it lightly, but she didn't need to go into her sister thinking her a freak right now, did she?

Honestly, if there was anyone from Hogwarts in her year that Lily would have considered dating, it would have been Remus Lupin. He was nice, responsible, and had an air of mystery to him that she couldn't help but want to know more of. Lily liked a good mystery, after all.

And then, before she knew it, she heard a voice that was kind of familiar, asking Remus and her if they were excited for the new year. It jogged her out of her questions about dating, and jarred her back into reality. Lily smiled, and said, "Well, I'm always excited to be back at Hogwarts. Now, if Potter suddenly gets the picture and stops asking me out, it'll be a nearly perfect year." It wasn't like either of them hadn't seen her get so upset at James Potter.

Lily was so sick of James Potter picking on Severus, pulling those stupid pranks, messing his hair up on purpose. It was so stupid. She didn't see how anyone in the school could stand that pathetic act. It was clearly him trying to get attention from the rest of the student body. And, by asking her out so many times... that must be part of it, too.

Alyssa just for a split second narrowed her eyes into a glare. She knew all along that Potter greatly fancied Lily, but he never even knew that she even existed. "Oh well, boys are boys what do you expect." She said light heartily. "If you want I could talk to him for you and tell him to back off. I know how annoying boys can be." She said with a sweet smile to Lily.

"Talk to him all you like. Sirius and I have both tried..." Remus muttered, a soft smile forming. "James Potter is as thick skulled as they come when he wants to be."

Really, he loved his friends. He really did. But he wasn't about to deny their faults. Everyone had them. He'd defend them to the end as the amazing people they are, but even he had times he wanted to strangle them.

Pushing aside the thoughts, he turned back to the two before him.

Lily looked over to Alyssa when she said that she'd talk to James. Despite Remus already having answered, she shrugged, and said, "You can certainly try. I don't expect the outcome to be any difference in his behavior whether or not you talk to him. It doesn't make any difference when I yell at him to quit it."

Really, Lily was getting sick of the conversation being about James Potter. So, before it could reside on the topic any further, she decided to get onto a lighter topic. "So, have either of you been invited to Slughorn's on train party?" she asked. Despite her being one of Slughorn's favorites, she didn't exactly want to be the only one she knew going to the party. What was the fun in that?

Remus Lupin

With the mention of Slughorn and his parties, Remus bit back the urge to cringe. That professor was the only one, Remus could honestly say disturbed him. He was always so happy concerning potions. He also seemed to enjoy when Remus and Peter inevitably blew up another cauldron.

He shook his head, amused with his own memories of exploding cauldrons and potions covered students. If anything, he'd be more likely used for an experimental cure all than be invited to one of those parties.

"With how I ruin cauldrons?" he replied, tone good humored.

Lily laughed slightly at the mention of Remus's performance in Potions. For one that was such a good student in just about everything else, he was terrible at Potions. It's something that startled her extremely.

"You know, Remus, it isn't just people who are good at Potions that go to the parties. There's people with powerful spells, powerful parents, and, of course, the occasional famous people," Lily said. Just because Remus was terrible at potions, it didn't mean that he could never get to the party. "Well, there's also another way to get to the party, but I don't think Slughorn wants plus ones right now. He does that for parties at Hogwarts."

And that was when Lily had a brilliant idea. "Well, if you want to increase your grades some in his class, you can always have someone tutor you. There's a few people in the class that Slughorn would personally recommend," she said simply. It was a subtle way, in her opinion, to tell him that she would be all right with tutoring him... well, as long as James Potter didn't get word and started following her.

Sirius Black

Sirius searched the shelves up and down, left to right, sideway, looking for the book that Remus wanted. 'Why the bloody hell is it this hard to find a damn book? Why does he even need it anyway.' he thought to himself as he went to yet another shelf to search for this book. It had to be there. Somewhere. Come on, they've been searching for it for over 2 hours and they searched almost the entire store. In every nook and cranny they could think of, and let's just say, some of it wasn't pretty to look at. They had to be cornering it somewhere. The bookkeeper even said it was in here. Where exactly, he didn't even know.

"Damn bloody book. I'm gonna burn it...." Sirius mumbled, pushing books aside ruffly as he searched. Just when he was about to give up, the spine of a book caught his eye. "Ah ha!" he jumped back, pointing at the book. "I found you!" he ripped the book from the shelf and looked at it for a few seconds. ".. To Moony!" And with that he was off to find where Remus was.

"Hey Lupin! Look what I found." Came Sirius' voice from around the book shelf and emerging a few seconds later holding up a copy of the book he was searching for. "It was right nex-" he started saying, but stopped when he noticed the company. "Why hello ladies," He said, with a small smirk as he walked up next to Remus. "Did you have a good summer holiday?"

Remus Lupin

At the suggestion of tutoring, Remus very nearly caved and begged for help. He was tired of being covered in Merlin knows what was created. Honestly, he knew the theory. He knew what everything did and even why it was chosen over a substitute. He could follow the potion instructions perfectly and still mess up something. It was applying the theory to practical use that just didn't mix.

He started to reply just as a familiar voice broke through the quiet air of the book shop. Biting back a cringe at the ill timed arrival, he mentally cursed. Damn... he thought just as his friend Sirius Black appeared, book in hand.

He loved his friends. He really did. Honest.
