My trusty spring assisted stilletto just fell apart the other day and so I thought id order myself a new knife. I live in northern California and I can never find butterfly knives for sale anywhere. upon looking for a knife to order I found a nice, sturdy-sounding balisong that I immediately ordered with excitement. are these illegal where I am? will I be fined/have it confiscated if Im found possessing it outside of my home by law enforcement? not that this is likely, I just like being able to openly use my knives for their jobs without fear of having it taken away. I would appreciate any information anyone has to offer. thank you.

I have a bad feeling that in your particular state butterfly knives might just be illegal but I'll try to find some info about this and get back to you. Until you find out more I'd keep it on the DL perhaps.

Yah as I thought. In California concealed carry of most types of folding knives is perfectly legal, however butterfly knives are prohibited as they fall under the "switchblade" laws because they "can be opened with the flick of the wrist." I've heard information that there are plans to give these knife laws different wordings to make things more clear and in the process some types of knives including butterfly knives might become legal so you never know.

Ok, thank you for the information. That's a letdown that they're currently illegal. I figured that the website wouldn't ship them to me if it was illegal, but I guess I was wrong. Thanks again, I guess it'll just have to stay at home for a bit unless they decide to change the law to be more specific. It surprises me that spring-assisted knives are legal and the balisongs aren't. I would consider the one I had that just broke to be more of a switchblade, but I suppose laws don't always make perfect sense.

Exilisciurus laws more like lawls. The wording is pretty vague. But the prosecuting attorney always makes it sound specific. Pencils are just as lethal......

If it's over 3 inches I believe it's illegal.

CA resident here, anything folding is legal to carry, aside from balisongs and switchblades over a certain length.

The type of knife which opens with the push of a button? btw I'm from Canada where Balisongs and Automatics are completely illegal everywhere unfortunately. I'd give a lot to get a Benchmade 42 butterfly knife and a Infidel OTF Auto. I do have quite a few butterfly trainers though so if I got a hold of a real one I'd be able to handle it very well. 3nodding

I understand. The whole concealed carry business. I'd say unless someone is camping or their job requires mass amounts of cutting then any knife with a blade over 4 inches generally isn't necessarily or practical to carry anyway.

In the state of California it is illegal to carry a balisong in public. However it is legal to own one as long as you keep it inside of your home. I am not too sure about purchasing a balisong online but im pretty sure that's illegal as well.
