Robert was early.

This should have been the first indication that something was wrong, but there he was, fully dressed, packed, and geared up for an external mission, and standing in the portal room looking at his phone. He was early, he was prepared, and he was ready to stop ******** everything up -

With one exception.

He hadn't invited anyone to come with him, yet.

In truth, Robert had decided who he wanted a while ago. He knew who he wanted, and he knew who he needed. His finger was pressed on the dial button, ready to call Petra. He wanted her beside him right now, more than anything in this world.

And then he hit the cancel button.

This was either going to be the first time Robert took a step in the right direction, or the last time he took anyone's advice, ever. His heart ached as he started texting Jordan, the easier of the two texts he would do that morning. When that was done, he flipped through his contact list to the C's, pushed down on a name he never thought he'd press, and finally texted her.

Prolixity
Mission today boss, meet me at the portal room ASAP!

I need you for a mission. If you're not going to come, text me back and let me know so I can find someone else.

Someone else. Someone better. Someone Petra.

Robert hoped, deep down, he wasn't making a mistake.

Text: On my way!

Not long afterwards, Jordan arrived at the portal room, dressed, caffeinated, and generally prepared. As he walked into the room, he grinned at Robert. "Your spelling has improved. What miracle do I have to thank for that? Where are we off to?"

Robert turned his phone around to hold it up for Jordan to see; he'd installed an approved app that he'd been cleared for.

"Spell checker." He murmured quietly, solemnly. "They got a whiff of my texts lately, and decided I needed a little help." It was hard to tell, but Robert was embarrassed about this 'assistance'. He immediately put the phone away, and rested his head back on the wall. "Thanks for coming, by the way. I know this isn't your ideal situation."

He'd talked to Jordan about his decision long before the day had come, but once Robert decided on something, he stuck to it. And this, this terrible idea, he was sticking to.

"You got everything?"

"It's fine," Jordan answered, more seriously. "We do what we need to do." He looked up at Robert, catching the big man's eye. "You know you can call on me anytime."

To the question, he nodded. "Got everything. You?"

Candace was on top of the world. She'd led a mission, and led it successfully. That was one thing off her list! She even sent Aria a text.
Marushii
Lead a mission! It went GREAT! Took Molly and Deryk with me, they did well. On to the next tasks~.

It was after sending that she received a text, but the sender and the message combined had her jaw dropping. Wait. Wait wait. What? This was...there was only one trainee named Robert, right? s**t! This was for real! Candace blinked. He thought she was going to reject, huh? She snorted and rolled her eyes. "Dumbass through and through."

Nio Love
You underestimate me. I'm on my way.

She tossed on her coat, pausing as she glanced at her black scarf. It was covered in blood...she didn't want to wear it until she had a chance to wash or replace it. Did it matter if she wore the same scarf she was given? Would a temporary replacement do? She grabbed the silk scarf she had been given for Christmas, just pretending to forget who it was from as she tied it neatly around her neck.

It wasn't long before Candace's humming could be heard approaching, adjusting her rings over her gloves and looking up as she entered the room.

She promptly stopped dead in her tracks and stared directly at Jordan.

Fuuuuuuuuuuck.

Candace frowned and shook her head, turning a grin toward Robert and putting her hands on her hips, tilting her head to one side. "Fancy seeing you here~. So what's this mission you need me--us for?" Forget it, Candace. Now was not the time. Now was not the time. It was time to get s**t done and get it done right; there was no room for distraction.

He hadn't received a text from Candace, and she showed up several minutes later, looking as sassy and obnoxious as ever. He rubbed his hand down with his face, and stood up, an uncharacteristically serious look on his face. "Here's the report." He reached behind his back and pulled out a couple of crumpled pieces of paper, explaining the mission. In short, all local animals, including pet dogs, birds, cats, rodents, have all gone missing in a town in New York. Woodside, specifically. Details on the town itself were sparse, but it was clear they were being sent out to investigate the disappearances.

He gave them enough time to read it, but after that period was over, he stood up straight and scuffed his boots. "Look." He murmured quietly. "I know s**t ain't real cut and dry with all of us lately. But a job's a job. So let's just.. get to work."

His eyes lifted, and looked from one, to the other. "We cool with that?"

A pained, faintly guilty expression flicked across Jordan's face before he got it back under control, just nodding to Candace by way of greeting. The fact that she was wearing the scarf that he'd given her for Christmas just made him feel more like an a**, really; but awkward as the atmosphere between him and Candace was right now, that was a personal matter. This was a mission, and he would damn well be professional about it.

He looked over the report, then handed it back, nodding. It was strange to see Robert so quiet and serious; Jordan still wasn't sure he'd be used to it any time soon. "Yeah," he answered, and glanced at Candace, then looked away again. "I'm good with it."
PostPosted: Sat Jan 21, 2012 11:59 pm

She reached out a hand and took the crumbled paper as it was handed to her, not even making an obnoxious show of flattening it out on the wall or something. Candace simply read it as she received it, unfolding it as she needed to. All the animals? She blinked. It sounded like an elaborate petnapping scheme. She'd done a report on a case like this in college, even. Huh...weird. She was just finishing it when Robert spoke up, and she was actually rather surprised...again. Candace chuckled and neatly folded the paper to put it in a small bag she had hanging from her shoulder. "Robert, I am nothing if not professional. It's never been my style. I would never jeopardize a mission of any kind with petty feelings of dislike for this, that or the other."

Candace glanced Jordan's way as he agreed to it and she cleared her throat, quickly looking away from him to give Robert her attention again. "Alright then. So! New York, huh? Been awhile since I went there. This should be fun!" She lifted a hand to wiggle her fingers, showing off one of Atropos' rings while patting her bag with her other hand. "I'm good to go. Lead the way, Robert."

"I know, Candace." Robert admitted sullenly. It was why she was here, after all. "I know."

He moved away, and slammed his hand on the button, making the portal generator roar to life. "So let's go investigate where Lassie ran off to, and get back home before lunch." It all sounded just a little too easy. Those kinds of missions were the worst.

Once they have "collected enough information", they can return back and submit a report in this thread.
1- 20: Nothing seems out of the ordinary in this area, it is a rather crowded area close to the commercial district, so half the area is filled with stores, shops, so on so forth, and rather populated.
21 - 40: At first it doesn't catch your eye, it doesn't seem that extraordinary, just the body of a dead animal next to the dumpsters.
41 - 60: You begin to notice, as you decided to tour the more unsavoury areas of the neighbourhood, that there are dead animals everywhere. Not pet ones, just crows, pidgeons, rats even.
61 - 80: Something crunches under your foot - you have just stepped in a family of cockroaches fleeing from somewhere
81- 100: You hear a strange whining, shrill noise, but you can't locate the source.

"Off to the well to find little Timmy, probably," Jordan said, and stepped through the portal.

It seemed quiet enough on the other side; as usual, the portal had opened into an unpopulated area. Jordan moved aside to get out of the way, and glanced around. Nothing seemed immediately unusual; nothing dead in sight, not yet. It took a few moments before he consciously noticed the faint, high whining - like a mosquito, he thought, or metal scraping, but at a much higher pitch, and continuous. He turned his head, trying to pinpoint the direction the sound was coming from, but couldn't detect a change in volume.

When Robert and Candace had come through, he looked to them. "Do you hear that?"

Why so sad, Mr. Bear? Candace eyed Robert curiously as he seemed to just...give in to what she was saying. Strange. No come back? No retort? No smartass remarks about how she was just some arrogant whore? Well...alright then. She'd let it go.

Once they'd stepped through the portal Candace gave the area a curious look around. She'd never been here before. How interes--what?

"...Hear what?" Candace frowned, giving Jordan an actually worried look. Did heard the typical town noises but nothing worth noting. What was he hearing that stood out to him?

Jordan's question made Robert pause for a moment, his hand slipping into his pocket out of reflex. He tilted his head up, listening for the sound, but it was difficult to pinpoint anything with the noise of everyday urban life humming quietly around them. Snatches of conversation, cars rolling past, and most importantly, the rickety elevated train that noisily passed over their heads every few minutes. He decided to follow the path under the train, gesturing to his companions in the direction he planned on, and started walking down the sidewalk.

Store after store passed by in a blur. The only thing Robert noticed was the startling number of bars; there were three on the block he'd just walked down. "What I wouldn't give for a drink, right now.." He muttered grumpily as he passed a fancy looking one named Donovan's. Lots of irish names went past, but the further he walked, the dirtier things got.

Suddenly, he noticed a real difference in his surroundings. All of the stores had spanish names on them, and their state of decay was significantly further along than the few blocks before them. He didn't know exactly where he'd passed some silent, cultural barrier, but it was clear he was in a less affluent part of the town, now.

And the stench that started to rise from the sewers spoke volumes about it.

"Christ.." Robert finally stopped fiddling with Jezebel and crouched down, taking a look into the barred sewer grate that punctured the side of the crosswalk. The smell was assaulting his senses, and he plucked his shirt out to hide his face as he looked down into it.

The deterioration of the neighborhood wasn't the cause of the smell. Dozens; no hundreds of dead pigeons and rats floating through the dark, muddy water down below. Robert felt his breakfast threaten to make a second appearance. No pets, but it was clear that something was killing animals in droves, around here.

"Don't look down there unless you wanna lose your lunch - but I think I found the animals. Now we just gotta figure out why."

"A whining sound." Jordan paused, then shook his head. "It's gone now."

He followed Robert, keeping a careful eye out for anything that looked out of place; nothing was evident immediately, though as they walked, he noted the signs of decay and disrepair in the area, the appearance of iron bars over the windows of shops, the sudden shift from English names to Spanish. It was clear that they'd found the low-income area of the town.

The smell rose slowly enough that it was almost subtle, but by the time Robert crouched down to look into the sewer, it was all around. Jordan leaned over to peer down into the dank, dark space that Robert was indicating, holding the end of his scarf over his nose and mouth to block the worst of the smell. "Damn," he said.

The whining sound intruded again, and he straightened up, turning and pacing a few steps to see if he could tell where it was coming from, but with no success once again. "Listen," he said. "There it is."

"That's strange. The only whining I heard was from that kid on the corner with his mother." Candace sounded honest enough. She seriously didn't hear whatever it was Jordan had been talking about; the only whining she heard was a child not getting his way.

She followed alongside Robert, frowning at the look of the neighborhood they were in. How...familiar. Except for the Irish bars and pubs it was almost homesick-inducing for the woman. She didn't want to call that place home, she really didn't, but it was hard to deny it completely.

When they reached the smell of sewer Candace gagged and pulled the collar of her coat up and over to cover her nose, knowing the silk scarf wouldn't be enough to cover up the smell at all. Even the coat wasn't enough. It smelled like..death. Jesus! What the hell was that smell?! At Robert's warning Candace nodded. "Noted..ugh...oh man is that a cat?" No, Candace. It's actually just a rat. A large rat.

A large dead rat.

Enjoy tasting your breakfast again.

"I don't hear it the sound, Jordan. I'm really sorry." She was being honest. "You said it's a whining sound?" Candace fell quiet, genuinely trying to find the noise. Was it the train on the tracks, perhaps?

Robert pushed himself back up to his feet, backing away from the sewer and rubbing his eyes. They stung from the stench, and were hard to keep open. His ears, as far as he knew, were working perfectlly though - and yet he couldn't hear the whining noise Jordan kept mentioning.

Until now.

One finger went into his ear, shaking it vigorously just as the 7 train rumbled past overhead. When the sound of it faded, Robert realized there was some kind of keening noise left still in the air. He looked up at the dilapidated tracks, and his face paled just slightly.

"Okay, you got me Jordan. I can hear it too, now. I thought it was the train, at first, but.."

He started backing away from the road they were standing on. "We shouldn't stick around here too long. Whatever that sound is, it can only mean trouble."
