Fan Thought, read at own risk:
There can only be one Shingami. By spliting his soul, Death creates Kid. As Kid grows in power, and becomes closer to being a full Shinigami[shown by the connecting sanzu lines] Death slowly grows weaker, untill he dies[shown by the cracking mask] so in a sense, Death and Kid are the same. But only one full "Death" can exist.
