"I like ~" is said, "___ ga suki desu."
PostPosted: Tue Apr 27, 2010 10:39 am

If it is something you like to...

Drink: ______ o nomimasu ga suki desu.

Eat: ______ o tabemasu ga suki desu.

[subject] [particle] [verb] I like.

I hope that is not too confusing.

I just wanted to correct some grammar here. the form "like to do (something)" actually follows "V(in dictionary form) no ga suki desu"
So:
"I like to swim" translates to "(watashi wa) oyogu no ga suki desu."
For your examples of eat and drink, I'll use Juice and Apple.
"I like to drink juice"
(watashi wa) juusu o nomu no ga suki desu.
"I like to eat apples"
(watashi wa) ringo o taberu no ga suki desu.

Hope that helps *^_^*

Would this be the place for corrections on grammar?

Is this sentence correct?

今日は日誌を始める日です。
きょう は にっし を はじめる ひ です。
It's supposed to say "Today is the day that (I) begin (my) journal."

Just wondered because I figured it'd help my Japanese to write something everyday, so I started a journal Thursday.

Good to know... maybe that is just the way they introduce it to beginning students, so they don't get to confused. I could be wrong, because I am certainly not as advanced as the rest of you.

This would be a fine place for grammar corrections, but no correction is necessary. Good job! If you feel like it, you could post your journal entries in the composition sub-forum for corrections any of us see there. ^_^

私は日本語を習っています。
Watashi ha nihongo wo naratteimasu.

Do you know about ~te iru form? It is used both for progressive actions ("am doing") and for an ongoing or permanent change (e.g., "I am married").

I am not sure why, but it seems like I more often hear "I am studying Japanese," rather than "I am learning Japanese." Which would be

日本語を勉強しています。
Nihongo wo benkyou shiteimasu.
