well i have nothin better to do so here is my beginners guide to getting more power behind your punch.

I've seen a lot of my friends in the gym throing punches with dumbells or working on their arms and nothing else trying to strengthen their punches. Weeks later their punches don't do anymore damage then they used to.

It's because a good punch doesn't come just from the arms. A good fighter puts his whole body into the punch.

A good punch starts at the legs goes thru the core, pecs, shoulders, and, arms.

When you throw a punch you should be in a good stance with your legs slightly bent armes up ect. i keep the wright about (60 on the back leg 40 on the front leg.) whatever works.

when you throw the punch you should straighten your legs out ans shift most of your weight to the front foot.

This is where your core comes in while your punch is comming forward you should twist your body the opposide side of your punch. (with a right hand you turn left so your right side obliques turn towards your opponet.)

(don't forget to move your head to avoid a counter punch)

your arm then turns 90 degrees before you make contact and always punch through your opponet.

~some excercises for stronger punches~

squats with or without weights*

stand with your back on a wall (optional) nd bend your legs until your standing at a 90 degree angle. simple enough?

Sit ups and all of the sit up variants* with or without weight
(self explanitory?)

Torso Twists*
hold whatever weight your comfortable with in front of your abs. then twist to the left and right making sure to flex ur obligues with every twist.

Pull ups and Chin ups
(self explanitory?)

well that's all i got feel free to add to this or comment on it.

i disagree with how you say you should straighten your legs. I was taught to keep the legs bent at all times, because it means you can twist more, are able to move in more directions faster, you dont "pop up" into a punch, and you dont give out a sign that you are going to punch, so your opponent finds it harder to read you. Thats just what i was taught,, and it makes more sense to me, but maybe i misread what you were trying to say

Good stuff
I think when you punch, you should drop your level
and thus bend the legs

I've found it's best to train explosively when using weights. This works on your "Explosive Strenth", making sure that your punches (or kicks) go out as quickly as powerfully as possible.

I was just gonna say the same.

"Shift most of your weight to the front leg" sounds dubious to me. Balance is everything

I would say that you have to shift your weight, so you can have your weight behind the punch, but you want to keep a bit back for balance as you say, and just incase you have to change your attack suddenly (Abort! xd )

Shift yes. "Most of your weight to front leg" no.

I dunno...i think "most" is right, but only just. You dont want it to be 90% on your front leg, but maybe 60%? So that means technically "most" is on the front but theres still lots on the back

It all depends, if you're coming in with your punches ala Fraizer or Tyson, you kind of want to load up, if you're just going to counter-punch you kind of want to be not really flat footed, but planted.

Do you mean throwing a full punch with weights? If so, that'll just hyper extend your arm. If you mean something like bench press then I can kind of see where you're going.

We identify three forces that enhance the power of a punch in Kenpo.

1. Back-up Mass
2.Torque
3. Marriage of Gravity

Back up mass is simply placing the weapon in front of the body and driving with every ounce of the body. Blows that originate and land outside the center mass of your own body sacrifice the additional force of your own body weight.
Remember F=ma. Force equals mass times acceleration.more mass moving means more force, with the caveat of same acceleration.
Torque is rotational acceleration, think push/pull, when a weapon is moving towards the target, an equal mass acting on the opposite end of the fulcrum will aid in power delivery. Essentially, a punch from the left hand should see the right arm torque back to help drive the left limb forward.
Marriage of Gravity is tough to explain in words, basically down is good. dropping weight, downward angle all that. The 9.8m/s is your friend.

And my personal opinion is its not so much how hard you hit, but where and when you hit. Not to say that power is useless, absolutely not, power is important, but not as important as what you hit, and when you hit it.

Here are strange little secrets that make you punch harder.

1; start with and open hand and as you punch make a fist.
2; start with your hand upside-down and as you punch twist it around correctly.

These work, though I don't know why.

I dont like number 2, sounds like it would slow your punch down and make it easy to spot (and therefore block, and counter, etc etc )

The lack of mention of the word "hips" in here is pathetic.
