Bio from

At the ripe age of 14, Seo Taiji took his first step toward his destiny in music by starting an amateur rock group named "Haneul Byuk" (The Sky Wall). He moved toward his dream by joining another group called Hwalwhasan (Active Volcano) yet Taiji still stood at the crossroad between school and music. Music became a higher priority for him, which led him to give up his academic life and rebel against the Korean educational system that only suppresses the individuality of students. In 1989 when Taiji was only 17 years old, he was picked up as a bassist by a metal group called Sinawe. His commitment to this band reinforced his permanent departure from school and his will to pursue his goal in music.
After Sinawui broke up, Taiji made a radical turn from rock into dance music by organizing his own group, "Seo Taiji and boys" with two very talented dancers--Juno and Hyun Seok. In 1992, Taiji published his first album titled 'I know,' introducing a fresh style of Korean rap adapting from the original roots of Afro-American rap. His rap music attracted tremendous support from Korean youngsters who were in need for a cultural change in music.
Taiji's second album 'Hayeoga', in which the rhythm of our traditional peace song was exquisitely grafted with stronger metallic color, also received great popularity. Taiji said "I think rap and metal have a lot in common and ultimately aims at the same thing". Such attitudes are compressed in his third album, infested with thrashing rock. He resolutely leaves dance music by introducing songs like 'the Classroom Idea,' which sends out a critical message about the ills of the education system with a twist of hard rock. Not only did this album stir up controversy in its lyrics played forward, but Taiji Boys were accused of the masked Satanism in their songs when played backward, causing many disputes and issues that were never touched before.
Nine months later, Taiji released his fourth record including their hit, 'Come Back Home,' the first attempt at gangster rap in Korea. But the lyrics of the song 'Regret The Times' were nearly deleted by the Korean Broadcasting Ethics committee, accusing Taiji's lyrics of being a harmful influence to Korean youngsters. This outrageous censorship aroused public reaction to abolish the prior deliberation by the committee and as a result, the system itself became abolished.
On January 31st, 1996, Seo Taiji and boys retired from the stage after being involved in the music industry for four arduous years. But on July 7th, 1998, two and a half years later, Seo Taiji returned to his awaiting fans by releasing a solo album, filled with vivid and powerful alternative rock. His spirit in music advocates freedom and challenge; in other words, "Don't be afraid of pursuing new challenges and adventure in music, that's my attitude."
