Welcome to The Rebublic of Heaven: His Dark Materials Guild

Welcome one and all to TROH (The Republic of Heaven), the GAIA fan guild dedicated to Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. For all of you that have read the books, and all the books pertaining to them, this will hopefully prove to be a guild where you can discuss, understand, and learn more about Philip Pullman's master pieces.

The Following text is for those of you that would like a brief idea of what HDM is NOTE: I did not write the following green text, it came from Bridge to The Stars, which I will discuss later on in the post.:

The His Dark Materials trilogy is the masterpiece by Philip Pullman that is based upon the classic Paradise Lost, and told with a power and skill matched by few other writers. The trilogy has already won many awards, including the prestigious Whitbread Prize, the first ever "Children's" book to do so. But this is a work that is appealing and powerful no matter what your age. This site is dedicated to His Dark Materials, which consists of:

The Golden Compass/Northern Lights (UK)
is the first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy, and tells the story of Lyra Belacqua and her journey into the far north of a parallel universe on a quest to save her kidnapped friend.

The Subtle Knife
is the second book in the trilogy, and introduces Will Parry, a boy from our world who stumbles through a window into a different universe and finds himself on a quest to gain the subtle knife, a weapon so sharp that it can create windows between the worlds.

The Amber Spyglass
is the final book in the trilogy, and tells of the second great war in heaven, between the forces of The Authority and those of Lord Asriel, Lyra's father. Lyra and Will find themselves on a quest through the land of the dead, guided by a destiny that will bring them to finally discover themselves.

Also, there is one other book written by Pullman in addition to HDM:

Lyra's Oxford
The story of takes place two years after the ending of The Amber Spyglass. It begins with Lyra and Pan sitting on the roofs of Oxford, when she spots in the distance a witch's daemon, a storm petrel, being pursused by a large flock of starlings. According to the publishers, birds play a big part in this story (hence the title of the short story, "Lyra and the Birds" wink . From there, a mystery unfolds, but nothing else of the plot is given away.

Fans will be able to read Lyra's Oxford whether they've read the rest of His Dark Materials or not. The story looks back at the events in the trilogy, while also "wheting the appetite" for the forthcoming Book of Dust.

And one still in the production process:

The Book of Dust
Philip Pullman is working on a sort of companion novel to His Dark Materials, entitled "The Book of Dust." The Book of Dust" will contain short stories about many of the secondary characters such as Lee Scoresby and Serafina Pekkala. There may also be information about Dust, the Alethiometer, the Subtle Knife, and dæmons. Basically, all the things we wondered about, but weren't important enough to put into the books themselves.

Just a nice little glimps 3nodding Alrighty then. The above information was taken from www.Bridgetothestars.net, which is the most comprehensive HDM site on the net (Other than the ones on the links post wink )
