Shinigami are departed human souls that have gained supernatural powers. As such, their bodies are composed of ectoplasm and they can only be seen by other spiritually aware entities, which excludes most humans. In the series, shinigami, as well as most other types of spirits, are quite capable of influencing their environment. Additionally, they can be injured and die like regular humans, though it takes considerably greater injuries for the latter to occur than it would in regular humans.

The most prominent supernatural power possessed by a shinigami is their zanpakutō, a supernatural sword generated from the shinigami's soul. Shinigami also naturally give off spiritual energy, which varies greatly in magnitude with the strength of a shinigami. A zanpakutō is a physical manifestation of this force concentrated into a blade.[1]

Shinigami operations are based out of Soul Society, which is the afterlife in Bleach. Travel between the human world and Soul Society is extremely limited and monitored, but some shinigami are stationed in the human world to carry out their duties and therefore must often travel between the two. In addition, it is a crime for a shinigami to remain in the human world longer than a certain time limit. A shinigami's duties include leading Pluses (ghosts) to Soul Society in a practice called soul burial (konsō), and the cleansing of hollows (evil spirits).[2] Later in the series, shinigami duties are clarified further, and it is revealed that they are also responsible for governing the flow of spirits between the human world and Soul Society.

-Gotei 13(the 13 guard squads)
The Gotei 13 (護廷十三隊, goteijūsantai?) is the organization which most shinigami join. It is split into thirteen divisions (hence the name), with several divisions having certain specializations. The 4th Division is the medical/supply division, the 11th Division is the combat division (specialization in swordsmanship), and the 12th Division is the research/scientific division. It's unclear if the other divisions are specialized, as the three above are the only ones who receive any significant attention apart from their members.(see Gotei 13 sub forum for more)

-Vizards
The vizard are the antithesis to the arrancar; they are shinigami who have obtained hollow powers and whose shinigami powers remain dominant although they do have to undergo a process and maintain their dominance over their hollow, A vizard utilize their hollow powers through the physical manisfestation of their mask through a process called hollowfication which augments all of the shinigami's natural abilites and allow the vizard to use such Hollow Abilites like Cero

-Arrancar
An arrancar (sometimes written allankar or arankaru) is a hollow that has removed its mask and gained shinigami powers, Arrancars are more organized and higher in numbers to the vizard and are located in Hueco Mundo There Group forms an antithesis to that of the Gotei 13 from location down to their uniforms which are the exact opposite in color coordination then that of the shingami, Like the Shinigami the Arrancar are organized and seperated by rank such as the captain equivalent of the arrancar are the 10 espada's arrancar with ranked
1-10 in order of leathality as the arrancars numbered from 11-99 are labled in order of birth they are known as numeros. Numeros can follow under a certain espada forming that espada's Fraccion as equivilalent to a Captains Squad Division.

-Quincy
The Quincy (滅却師, kuinshī?, lit. "master of destruction" wink are a fictional sect of exorcists in the manga and anime series Bleach. Originally a mixture of survivors of hollow attacks and those who'd lost loved ones to hollows, the Quincy developed a variety of supernatural powers to hunt and kill hollows before they attacked humans (and to destroy those who already had), including the ability to control spiritual energy. The Quincy are nearly extinct due to extermination by the shinigami about 200 years

-Bounts
The Bounts a introduced in the filler arc are like the quincies a tribe of humans with spiritual abilities, They act like Vampiric beings since they need to feed off of souls in order to stay allive which gives them there immortal appearence.

-Shamans
Concept from Shaman King ,Clans and group of people who acts as mediums between the world of the living and the world of the dead. they can channel the spirits from Human Ghosts, to nature spirits into mediums which acts as weapons simular to shinigami zanpakuto as they acts as oversouls.

-Assassin
Used in Bleach latest filler arc the assassin unlike soul society are unbound by the laws of the Gotei 13 and hence forth they work for anyone under hire, Unlike Shinigami they do not use Zanpakuto instead they used the illegal Bakkouto simualr to Zanpakuto but they slowly merge with the hosts body to grant them more power.
