And so the moon carefully chooses who She calls out to. Her song, timeless and beautiful, barely rustles the leaves on the trees or stirs a blade of grass, but it is powerful; its recipient is powerless to resist their names whisper on the wind.
Amaryllis...
Amy sat up in bed slowly, turning her bleary gaze out the window. Though it was late, the full moon was beautiful that night, and as she watched its delicate rays dance down from the sky, she felt a connection to the night that she'd never felt before. As if still asleep, the girl slowly stood, left her bed, left her room, and finally her home behind to follow a call that she couldn't place from a voice that couldn't be anything but otherworldly.
Darkness Everlasting...
Dark sat outside silently as she felt the night slowly wrap its arms around her, like an old friend. As the sun set behind the mountains of the island and the full moon rose high in the sky, the girl turned her face to it, enjoying the beauty and the song of the night. This night, however, it was different; she could feel it in her soul, hear it on the wind. She heard it call her name and followed without question into the darkness.
Without realizing it, two strangers worked their way closer to one another across the island. The beaten path they followed led to trails that could barely be seen by the light of the moon, but somehow, their feet found steady purchase as they followed the call of the song of the moon. Finally, they forged their own trail into the virgin forests, a place Amy had never seen before and Dark had only heard about. The tall trees that surrounded them now were so tall and so dense, their canopy blocked out all but the most determined of rays of light that still flecked the ground before them.
After what seemed like an eternity of walking and searching, listening and answering, they found a small clearing in the woods, and found each other. But there was to time for introductions; to Amy, an angel appeared in that clearing, materializing as if out of moonlight itself. To Dark, a demon appeared, as if made entirely of shadow. Neither girl saw the other, or heard the message they had to deliver.
"Amaryllis," the angel said softly, turning a kind gaze up to the girl. The creature almost resembled a mouse, with a wolf-like muzzle and large hind paws. The eyes, however, were intelligent, almost human, and the wings and halo were that of an angel. Amy stared in wonder and listened quietly to what the harbringer of light had to tell her.
"Amaryllis," she said again, "we are the Chandra. We are a race forgotten by time, having nearly disappeared from the face of the world. There is still time to end what time has begun, still time to bring us back from the brink of extinction."
"Darkness Everlasting," the demon said quietly, turning accusing eyes to the other girl. Though he resembled the angel she couldn't see, he had no feathered wings or halo. Instead, horns adorned his head, and large, leathery wings suspended him from the ground. Though his large hind claws scarred the ground when he landed, Dark was not afraid, and listened intently to the message from the harbringer of darkness.
"Darkness Everlasting," he said again, "we are the Chandra. We are a race destroyed by humans, having nearly been wiped from the face of the world. There is still time to repent, still time to redeem yourselves for what you have done."
Whether it was a cloud passing over the moon or whether She herself tried to aid in the plight of her children, the girls were not to know. But in that instant, the night grew unbearably dark, and Amy could see the demon standing in front of Dark. But that moment passed, the light returning with renewed vigor, allowing Dark to see the angel that hovered in front of Amy.
"Help us," the Chandra said in unison. "These eggs are the remnants of a time long passed. Take them, raise them, give them homes. For it is on your shoulders that our fate falls, and in your hands our destiny."
"If you choose to accept your own destiny, by your hands we are saved," the angel said with unyeilding hope.
"If you choose to deny your own destiny, by your hands we are damned," said the demon, eyes desolate.
We are the Chandra, forgotten by time, leaving our fate in the hands of two girls in the hopes of finding salvation.
We are the Chandra, children of the moon, who hope to some day walk in the light once again. Save us!
We are the Chandra, children of the moon, who hope to some day walk in the light once again. Save us!
"Yes," Amy whispered, tears in her eyes at the honor, the ability to help such magestic creatures.
"I will," Dark said softly, eyes set determinedly at the responsibility settled on her shoulders.
"We will return," was their final statement, the angel returning to the moonlight and the demon going back to the shadows from which he'd come, leaving the two girls staring at each other over a small clutch of eggs.
Amy, slightly overwhelmed, took two shaking steps towards them and stopped, shakily lowering herself to her knees before she fell.
"I...I mean, I don't know where to begin." Emerald eyes turned up to the stranger before her, who smiled, if somewhat wryly.
"I do."
