MIDNIGHT MOON GUILD

For Pagans, Wiccans, & Witches

WICCA

OVERVIEW

Wicca was founded in the 1940's by a man named Gerald Gardner. It is based on the practice of witchcraft, as well as bits and pieces from other older pagan religions/practices, free-masonry and ceremonial magic.

Traditional Wicca is a specific pagan religion, that has specific core beliefs and practices. It is an orthopraxic, mystery religion, that is oath bound and requires coven initiation (usually man to woman, woman to man). It has specific deities (in this case the Lord and Lady of the Isles) and is fertility centered - not earth/nature centered. You will not find all that much info on Trad Wicca from books or on the internet, and a large bit of what is discussed in this guild (and most others for that matter) does not refer to Trad Wicca. Most of what is discussed refers to Eclectic Neo-Paganism paths (which are often mislabeled as Eclectic, Solitary or Neo-Wicca), which are based on the non-oath bound (outer-court) parts of Wiccan practices. It is always good to note the difference between the two, as there are many who won't recognize any claim of "Wiccan" outside of traditional paths. That isn't to say that one's practices and beliefs are necessarily invalid, but simply that they have often been mislabeled. (but that is a discussion for another time smile )

NEED TO KNOW

Terms relating to Wicca are confusing, as they are with so many other religions

Wiccans often refer to themselves as Neopagans or simply Pagans. These terms include all faith groups which are based on reconstruction of ancient, extinct religions and/or are non-Abrahamic religions, and include traditions like, Kemeticism, Hellenic Recons and Asatru. So obviously not all Pagans are Wiccan.

Some Wiccans consider Wicca and Witchcraft to be synonyms (they are not). Others differentiate between Wicca, which they view to be a religion, and Witchcraft, which they perceive to be the practice of magic. Under this definition, Witchcraft is not a religion and thus can be performed by members of any religion. Most Wiccans practice magic (and traditionally all Wiccans are Witches). However, some choose to concentrate more on the spirituality of the Wiccan religion, rather than the magical aspect of it. However if you find that witchcraft bothers you, then Wicca probably isn't the path for you. Of course there is nothing wrong with just being Pagan.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM too2sweet or other crew members to ask.
