Mutants.

The word often hangs in the air with a heaviness that is palpable, crushing. Mirroring other rights groups throughout history, it is now the gifted’s turn. And in all movements, there are extremes on either side - those who believe that people burdened with the X-gene should live among them. Others, others… see any with ‘unnatural’ talents only see pests that need to be exterminated. As more mutants emerge, the argument becomes more volatile. Protests, demonstrations, lawyers, marches, the tension have continued to rise between humans and the evolved.

In the contest between the polarized views, there has been one mutant who has stood before them all, vehemently advocating that mutants were people, that they deserved nothing more than to be treated as such. Charles Xavier. Vowing to make a safe haven for those who had been blessed with abilities beyond human capacity, the telepath opened a school on Gray Malkin Lane. The school’s population has grown and with it, their troubles. Many of his original students now serve as teachers to the new generation.

Some have accused him of amassing an army; and while they may be right, the students who dwell within the walls of the mansion learn valuable lessons they might not get elsewhere. Here they learn about control, acceptance, and hopefully bettering mankind. With the great debate making it to the House floor, they have seen an influx of students enroll, hoping for the protection that banding together might give them.

This is Academy X. Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

As hostilities and distrust rise between humans and mutants, Professor Xavier has opened the doors to his mansion for all those seeking a safe haven as they learn to control their abilities and use them for the greater good. Though not actually at the mansion much of the time, many of his prior students and former members of the team still reside there.

Currently, he is off at political conferences, trying to smooth the path for harmony.
