There was once a single wielder of the keyblade. At the time, that's all that was needed. It was the increase in darkness that caused his downfall. Outnumbered and overpowered by the secret organization bent on opening Kingdom Hearts and ruling the world, the wielder was defeated and the legendary Kingdom Key was destroyed, left in many, many pieces.
With no keyblade wielder, the darkness grew, and grew, before being released upon the worlds. It was such a quick, heavy takeover, that something had to change. One wielder wasn't enough to stop such darkness, so multiple were chosen for this life-threatening task. Each individual keyblade was weakened, no longer enough to lock the door to Kingdom Hearts. The Kingdom Key was the only hope..
The Kingdom Key scattered itself, a piece in every world. People were chosen to be the wielders of keyblades, which entitled them to stop the darkness. They were chosen to save each world from the heartless, and to find the pieces of the Kingdom Key before the Organization.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Organization worked together, using their strength in numbers to overpower the keyblade wielder. It was a close fight, but the organization finally won. The wielder was defeated, and his beloved Keyblade was destroyed in the process. Well, it seemed destroyed at least.
The fragments of the Kingdom Key began to glow with the brightest of light, before disappearing into the sky. The damned weapon scattered itself all across the universe, inhabiting every planet. The Organization knew they had to act while they could, sending millions and millions of Heartless to begin their invasion on each of the worlds. Destruction and darkness followed.
While using the Heartless to cause destruction, each member of the organization was assigned as specific world to be in charge of. They were to find the piece of the Kingdom Key before anyone else could, hoping to keep the Key from being fixed somehow.
All that's needed to lock the door to Kingdom Hearts is to find each fragment of the Kingdom Key. When each piece is within close proximity of one and other, they would fuse back into the Kingdom Key. Then, the true key to locking Kingdom Hearts will be exist once again, and the chosen one must use it to seal away the darkness.
