Ages ago, in a time and world long forgotten in the realm of Earth, a power of untold capacity flowed like lifeblood to all who claimed Earth their home. It was a power quite unlike any other element to nature in our day, one which worked in a manner quite foreign to our imagination.
Unlike fire, electricity, steam, wind, or ether (as solar energy was once deemed), this power was directly entwined to the fabric of reality. Unlike all other forms of elemental energy, it could not be forcibly manifested, and because of its connection to our dimensional fabric, occurred by the whim of time itself.
Ancient proverb declares that history repeats itself, with good reason. You see, time works much like a wavelength which appears on electrocardiograms used around the world. The wave is constantly dipping and rising above a certain horizontal axis. On time's decline, when it dips below the axis, the power refuses to manifest itself and disappears from our world totally. When it rises above the axis, though, on its incline, then the power once again begins to manifest itself. This cycle has always been and always will be; it is as natural as any other element's laws.
The last manner, in which the power is separate from the others, which I will relate to you, but certainly not its last actual dissimilarity, is its nature of existence. The power is comprised of what is said to be the base of all reality. It is the collection of millions of miniscule, undetectable particles which all other atoms and electrons and protons are crafted of. They are bonded together and yet separate, they are the thread which crafts the fabric of reality, the fabric which makes up the web that is the universe. The particles, since all bonded together, have always manifested a form of hive sentience during their period of activity. Entire races once worshipped this base sentience as a god.
Since subject to the whims of the ebbing and rising of time's flows, the particle's sentience only churns into activity during the period in which time flows above the theoretical "flat-line". Lost species begin to reappear throughout the globe. Regular animals begin to manifest their true nature as mythical creatures of legend. Normal humans begin to change into forgotten races; children, upon reaching puberty, take on the faces of beautiful elves, horrific orcs, and stalwart dwarves. The fabled laws of the ancient power begin to resurface, and what was deemed "magic" in legend now reappears to the hands of those who would study its nature.
The age of technology has reached its belated end, as it is once again replaced with the age of mystery. Science must once again relinquish its reign to the laws of nature.
Steel yourself, child, for the coming of the ancient power. Steel yourself, for the Awakening.</CENTER>
