The original plot revolves around Rin Okumura, a teenager with abnormal strength and endurance who, with his younger twin Yukio, was raised by "Father" Shiro Fujimoto. Soon after Yukio departs to study at True Cross Academy, Rin learns that he is the son of Satan, the strongest of all demons. Because he saw Shiro dying to protect him, Rin ends up doing what his guardian asked him never to do. "Never draw the demon-slaying blade Kurikara, it holds your demonic powers, from its scabbard." But he did, and from that moment on, Rin not only gains permanent demonic features like fangs, pointed ears, fiery "horns" and a tail, but also the power to ignite himself into blue flames that can destroy almost anything they touch. (Flames which are the sign of Satan)
At his father's funeral, Rin meets Mephisto Pheles (the mentioned best friend of Shiro), who agrees with Rin's wish to become an Exorcist like his guardian, to become stronger and to defeat Satan. Rin enrolls at the True Cross Academy, which is actually the Japanese branch of an international organization dedicated to protect the human realm, Assiah, from demons and other creatures from the demon realm, Gehenna. Rin takes part in a special Exorcist course, the existence of which is known only by a few. Much to his surprise, he finds that his brother Yukio is already a veteran Exorcist and will be one of his teachers.
As time ticked on, God grew upset with the Exorcists (mainly due to the Okumura incident) and finally settled on doing something about it. A team of Angels were assembled to take care of the matter; sent down to Assiah, they'd go undercover as students and/or Exorcists, simply to get a better position. They were given alternative forms to better carry out the mission they were given; a mission no one but the angels themselves know. Some would take on a role as teachers, students, Exorcists, or they could even be the random civilian who shows up at the house claiming to be your long lost cousin. For the time being, the first step of their assignment is finding a place in the human realm and to gain "trust."
Usually their true task would be carried out at night, that task being to take out the Exorcists that are doing wrong in God’s eyes. Of course, Exorcist are questioning why their own have begun “missing mysteriously” after a mission. There's actually a list of disposal the angels go by naming Exorcists and even some humans. Even the infamous Okumura brothers, after all they’ve done to aid and protect Assiah, are listed. But the humans don’t know this. Some Exorcists have suspicions, but most keep it to themselves since they don’t want to seem rude or misguided in the eyes of the “holy”.
Though, besides all this, there's been another drastic change. Many Exorcists have gone rogue, merely for the fact that they didn't approve of the idea of working with Satan spawn. To them, it was outrageous; they fought demons and now they were working alongside them? And so, they look to obliterate every single living demon in Assiah under the name the Redeemers.
But down in Gehenna, Satan, like God, has his own plans as well. When they’ll surface is unknown. Only time will tell.
