So, we know two things:
1) zOMG needs to be more popular
2) Gaia likes sponsorships
So I was thinking last night about the idea of implementing sponsorships into zOMG. That is, sponsors would pay Gaia for certain (temporary) changes or mini-events in the game, My two main ideas are battling (sponsor) monsters for special loot and receiving unique, sponsor related power-ups.
For monster battling, I was thinking it would be something akin to the mini-events we have, except it would last all day (and/or all night) for a period of time, until the sponsorship ended, and it would take place ONLY in Barton Town. There would be a unique NPC for the sponsor who would request users' help.
For example, let's say the sponsor was Lucky Charms. Perhaps that leprechaun thing would be in Barton Town and if you clicked on it, he'd do a few lines of advertising or whatever, blahblahblah, and he'd be like "Me lucky charms are running away! Please, help me get them back!" There would be lucky charms running around that you'd have to kill. They would frequently, but not always, drop lucky charm loot (hearts, stars, etc) and you'd have to deliver 10 to the leprechaun, who would reward you with gold or perhaps an item (a sponsor-related item or whatever).
Before speaking to the sponsor NPC, if you tried to hit a sponsor-monster, red text would pop up saying "You must talk to NAMEHERE to receive the quest!"
The big concern here is the work involved. After initial coding, I don't think the programming aspect of it would be too difficult - it would really be a blank template (insert NPC here, insert text here, insert monster1.gif, monster2.gif, etc). The big problem is making the animated monsters. Obviously, considering they're temporary, they wouldn't need to be too too high quality.
The second concept is unique-powerup items. After talking to a sponsor, the NPC would reward you with five uses of a unique power-up. Perhaps they wouldn't do anything but make your avatar glow or something (like the sweetheart ring). Or if you wanted to get a little more fancy, here's this example:
Let's say Secret decided to do a sponsorship in this direction. They would give a "Non-Offending Odor" power-up, which when used, would radiate purple lines (like stink lines, but fragranty) from user's avatar for 15 minutes and their Ghi would not decrease. When not in Barton Town, Ghi increases by being around other people, and Secret could sort of supplement that (non-offending odor = people less likely to avoid you).
Also, the thing I must reiterate is that this would take place only in Barton Town (or Village Greens, if you insist). This contains the slew of people who want to get on zOMG only for the sponsorships and it would let people questing/farm do so in peace.
Your thoughts:
Bouncing off the idea of a trailer and running with the Lucky Charms concept, potential dialogue could go as such:
Leprechaun: Help! Oh help! They've taken me lucky charms!
User: Wait - they're doing what? What are lucky charms???
Leprechaun: *insert video or picture of box of cereal*
Leprechaun: Please fetch the lucky charms that were taken from me!
And then you'd collect 10 lucky charms, return them, and get gold or a special sponsor item.

Lady Kayura
This is a truly fantastic idea! I find it pretty amazing how creative Gaians are when trying to find ways to bring more income to zOMG.
I'll make an additional suggestion to it. It seems to me a lot of sponsors want some sort of trailer played. Perhaps we could talk to the NPC and have the trailer played in the same way an ad will play before tiles. That way movies and games could also get attention too.
I love the unique power up that's only useful in Barton town.
What if there was a special badge related to sponsors? Let's say that sponsors give out points in the same format that mini events do. And when you participate in a sponsor quest, you get points. Then after a bunch of them and a bunch of points, you get a nifty little badge to show off with our other badges (like the kill badges and the EB badge)?
Side note, you should at the very least link this to the SF thread about Catch22 and zOMG. Or post this in SF too.
