Soulbinding/Attunement Questions

  • What is soulbinding?
Soulbinding is the locking of an item to your character. This means you cannot get rid of it by selling in the Marketplace, trading, gifting, or putting it in your storage. You may sell some items back to the stores.

  • Why can't I sell my rings in the Marketplace when I see a them there all the time?
On 12/08/2008, a Major Ring System Update was made.
All rings obtained ingame after this update are soulbound.
Rings obtained before this date are not soulbound until worn by a user ingame.

  • Why are rings soulbound/locked/attuned now?
Ring prices were dropping too drastically and soon most people would buy their way through the game instead of playing it. Ring attunement also deals with issues of being able to buy/sell skills and levels.

  • How do I tell if a ring is soulbound?
Ingame, there will be a small yellow lock on the bottom right corner of the ring icon.
In your Gaia inventory, there will also be a lock on the icon.

  • Does upgrading a ring make it soulbound?
No, if it's not soulbound yet, only wearing it in zOMG will bind it.

  • Can I unsoulbind a ring?
No. It's exactly what it sounds like - it's BOUND to your SOUL so it's permanent.

  • What can I do with extra soulbound rings?
You can salvage them for orbs for your other rings.

  • Why didn't they make a site-wide announcement for this change?
We can only speculate, but probably because zOMG is still in beta testing, and not everyone on Gaia plays the game.

  • Will they remove the soulbinding in the future?
    Qixter
The ring attunement is here to stay, folks. Settle in and get used to it is my best advice.

The previous state of the game was an experiment in free-market skill balance. It was an experiment that failed. It will not be resumed.

However, we'll be continuing to make the game better and better (we are doing that even now)...so don't give up and quit just because you can't make ridiculous amounts of gold in the marketplace from farming this game anymore.

If the only reason you're playing this game is to capitalize on marketplace pressures, then this is the wrong game for you. This is an entertainment product that will promote more and more socialization over time and let people make friends while they play. It's not intended as a gold-producing vehicle and we'll continue to seal off things that promote farming or exploitative use of mule accounts.
    *quoted from Here

NOTE: the thread where the quote came from seems to have disappeared - I don't know if that changes anything about the dev team's stance on Ring Attunement (probably not). If anyone finds another quote from Qix about this, please post or PM me.
General Questions
This section contains questions about zOMG that are not restricted to a certain area.

  • How do I decrease Lag?
Lag a big part of zOMG beta, but there are some ways you can decrease it.
    1. close your PDA when you don't need it
    2. clear your cache and relog periodically
    3. if you use Firefox, you can block animations and other things with Adblock Plus [instructions]
    4. Go to options -> Graphics Options -> lower the setting to Medium or Low

  • How come I can't see my friend even though s/he appears as a blue dot on my map? o_O
zOMG servers are split into 'layers' or 'instances' of the same map. To get on the same layer, just invite your friend through the recrewt panel or use the /invite username option.

  • I can't receive invites!!
The invite glitch can be fixed by inviting someone who's not bugged or in a crew yet - they do NOT have to accept the invite for the fix to work. If they do accept, transfer the leadership to them before leaving the temporary crew. You should then be able to be crewed. Note that this is a temporary fix and you may have the glitch again the next time you log in.

  • Help! I'm stuck floating in the Null!!!
If you can reach one of the null crystals, go ahead and use it. If not, switch servers, or log out and wait a few minutes before logging back in. This will reset your avatar back to Barton.

  • What's g'hi?
G'hi are passive buffs that you accumulate by being active in zOMG. To see your g'hi abilities, go to your Character Info and click the g'hi tab. The blue bar at the bottom shows the progress you're making in leveling up the next g'hi ability.

G'hi abilities affect you more when your g'hi meter is full. You can fill your G'hi meter by going to Barton or hanging around other people.
***For more detailed information on G'hi, please visit [Makata]'s guide to your Rings/Sets/Stats/G'hi

  • It says I gained a ''new G'hi ability" but I still have the same 5?
There are currently only 5 known G'hi abilities available in zOMG. They have 3 tiers though and level from Minor Boost -> Boost -> Major Boost. Most likely one of your G'hi abilities just leveled to the next tier.
***For more detailed information on G'hi, please visit [Makata]'s guide to your Rings/Sets/Stats/G'hi

  • What's that lightning bolt I see sometimes over people's heads?
The lightning bolt signifies that the person is relogging or disconnecting from the server. When you close your zOMG! window, the server holds onto your avatar for a few minutes before booting it. This allows you to stay in a crew or an instance when you're relogging, and also prevents quick escapes.

  • What are badges and how do I get them?
Badges are ways of showing your achievements in zOMG! They are given for all sorts of things, including finding new areas, completing quest chains, and killing the animated.

To see your badges, display them on your v.2 profile, or go to My Gaia->Quests->Completed.

Bria's Guide lists most of the available badges.

  • What's this GIM message I see sometimes when I log in?
GIM is the message system we use in zOMG! to chat, whisper, etc.

When you log into zOMG!, you're automtically signed into the messagenger - so if you relog, you are signed in twice. If you use the messenger on the website, it also registers you as being logged in twice.

To reply, press 'backspace' and then 1 and it will sign you off the other 'locations'.

To avoid some of the double-logged messages, you can go to your Account Settings -> Preferences, then under the Gaia Instant Messenger section and check no for "Automatically log in to Gaia IM".

  • What are clans?
Clans are somewhat like guilds - except they're made with zOMG in mind. When you're in a clan, it's easier to contact people through clan chat. You can also have private forums to share strategies, find people to play zOMG! with, and just be social. Unlike guilds, you may only join one clan at a time, so choose wisely!
*** for more clan info, see Clans F.A.Q.

Animated and Drops

  • What do the colors on Monster and People names mean?
purple - too easy - little to no drops
blue - easy - fewer drops
green - around your level - most drops
yellow - hard - fewer drops
red - very hard or boss level - little to no drops

  • How can I get more drops?
    1) Make sure your enemies show up green to you.
    2) Make sure your crew mates are also green to you.
    3) Increase your luck stat by filling up your g'hi meter (go to Barton or hang around a lot of people - crewing is a great way to do this)
    4) Increase your luck stat by using a Fitness Ring or Angel Set.

  • How do I get credit for killing XX?
You have to be on its hate list. Some also require you to be present when it spawns and alive when it dies.

  • How do I get on an animated's hate list?
You can get on its hate list by attacking it, or healing someone who's attacking it. If it's aggressive, having it chase after you will also do the trick.

  • Where does ___ spawn or where can I get ___ drops?
Scroll back up to the Link List in the second post and use the guides posted there wink .

  • Where's a good orb farming spot?
This guide has some nice maps and information about farming locations for each area :3~

  • Will loot items I buy off the marketplace count towards collection quests?
No. The item count for quests isn't directly linked to your inventory. So just go by the red text - if it says you only have one, then you only have one.

Null Fragments and Recipes

  • What are null fragments for?
Null fragments are ingredients needed for most recipe you make.

  • How do I get null fragments?
There are currently only two ways: completing quests and buying them from the cash shop.
Some zOMG events (like the Halloween event) may also give null fragments.

  • How do I make recipes?
If you have all the items required to make the recipe item, you can either go to Nicolae's shop and press the "Make Recipes" button below his picture, or click on the recipe in your inventory.
note: recipes are one time use only.
*** see the Link List in the second post for recipe and materials lists.

Crews

What are the benefits of being in a crew?
When you're in a crew, you share drops with everyone in your crew as long as they're on the same screen. That means you can kill more things and get more drops. Being in a crew also helps you keep up your g'hi because you're active and close to other gaians. Keeping up your g'hi will increase your luck and give you nice stat boosts.

  • How do I create a crew?
To create a crew, all you need to do is invite someone either through the recrewt panel under your mini-map, or by using the /invite command.

  • How do I join a crew?
To join a crew, just have someone invite you, and accept the invitation.

  • Do the CL levels of my crew mates affect my drops?
Yes they do - remember that you want the animated you're killing to show up green for the most drops. If your crew mate's CL is too high, it means they're getting no drops, and via sharing -> you're also getting no drops. So try keeping everyone in your crew green, and if that's not possible, then at least blue/yellow.

Rage

  • What is rage?
Rage is like energy you store up while you fight the animated - you can build it up by using your rings or sometimes while getting hit by animated.

  • How do I know how much rage I've built?
You can see your rage by the little red meter next to your health and stamina.

  • What do those marks on my rage meter mean?
Rage has 4 ranks - each one will have a different animation when you use the ring, and of course, the more rage you use, the 'stronger' the ring will be. (Rage Rank 4 = RR4)

  • How do I use rage?
There are several ways to release your rage.
    1. After you select an attack or buff, click and hold down your cursor over a target until your rage meter reaches the desired level. Then release.
    2. After selecting a target, press and hold the hotkey you're using for a ring.
    3. After selecting a target, clicking and holding the the icon for the ring you want to use on your ring tray.
Orbs

  • What are those purple orbs and how do I get them?
Charge orbs are dropped randomly by the animated(mobs) that you kill in zOMG. They are also given as rewards for quests that you complete. You use them to upgrade your Rings and increase your CL.

  • Help!! I had ___ orbs, but now they disappeared!!
Calm down, sometimes zOMG just lags when displaying your orb count. Go to your inventory on the website and check how many orbs are there - that is the correct amount of orbs you hold and will not disappear. Next time you go into the Null chamber and upgrade your rings, your orb count will revert to the correct number.

  • Can I sell/buy/trade orbs?
    No, they are soulbound.

Rings

  • I bought a ring in the marketplace but it doesn't show up ingame!
    Relog.

  • How do I equip or change a ring?
Rings can only be swapped from your backpack to your fingers when you're in the Null chamber. Simply click the backpack icon between your 'fingers' and it will show an inventory of zOMG items. Click and drag the desired ring to the finger you want it to go on.

You can switch ring positions when you're not in the null chamber, and you can also put rings in empty spots when outside of the Null. You cannot take rings off or change them for something in your pack outside the Null Chamber.

  • My ring shows up as a '?' ingame and I can't use it...
Sometimes zOMG doesn't know what icon show for a ring - this happens when you obtain a new ring that's not in your inventory already. Can usually be fixed by relogging.

  • What is a '???' ring?
It's a Fitness Ring, click on it in your inventory like a gift or 'special' item to open it and reveal the actual ring.

  • How do I get new rings?
You can obtain rings as random drops from animated that you kill, completing the quest chains in certain areas, and from the marketplace.

  • What are the fractions I see when I hover my cursor over a ring?
Number of orbs used/Total number of orbs to reach the next CL
    Examples:
    2.3 = 6/20
    5.6 = 30/50
    10.0 = 0/100

  • Why can't I sell/trade/gift my rings?
Most likely because your rings are soulbound.

  • What are ring sets and how do I use them?
zOMG rings come in sets of 4 - when you put all 4 rings of a set on the same 'hand', that hand will have a yellow glow and you will get the set bonus. There are 8 sets right now, and each one has a different bonus. To see more info on the sets, go back up to the links section and click on one of the many guides to Sets. You can also see set info ingame by clicking Menu->game help->combat advanced

Upgrading and Charge Levels

  • How do I 'level up' or increase my CL?
zOMG has a ring system in which your level changes depending on the Charge Level(CL) of your rings. You can increase the CL on your rings by going to the null chamber -> opening your backpack -> Pressing the upgrade button. This will consume the same number of orbs as the current CL of the ring for each upgrade.

  • It won't let me upgrade one of my rings
First check if you have enough orbs. Sometimes zOMG! lags and won't let you upgrade a ring, just relog or wait it out and you should be able to again.

  • How do I calculate my ACL?
    Makata
Your ACL(Average Charge Level) is calculated by the following equation:
    [ ( 8*R8 )+( 7*R7 )+( 6*R6 )+( 5*R5 )+( 4*R4 )+( 3*R3 )+( 2*R2 )+ R1 ] / 36
Now, to use this equation, simply order your rings from largest ( R8 ) to smallest ( R1 ) and plug 'em into the equation above. Any answers you get should be rounded to the nearest 0.1 to reflect your ACL. :3
*quoted from [Makata]'s guide to your Rings/Sets/Stats/G'hi

  • What is TC?
TC is total charge - the total number of orbs you've obtained in the game through quests and drops. It does not include orbs gained by salvaging. It's the number above your orb count, next to the three pink fragments on your wing-shaped progress panel.

  • What is the maximum charge level?
    10. Most people think that this limit will be increased when zOMG expands.

  • I want to farm for ___, or help my lower level friend, but my CL is too high!
No worries! There is now a CL suppression system. Just talk to Trixie in the Null chamber, select the last option, and slide the bar to your desired CL. When you're done, you can change it back with no penalty. This feature is very new and is subject to more improvements and changes in the near future.
Sewers
Section pending because I don't know what the new sewer system is like yet.

Barton

  • Who do I talk to for Fernando's Secret?
The robot girl Bottom Left of Barton.

  • Where is Rufus's Diary?
Walk around in the trees behind the well top-left of Barton. A red message will pop up when you find it.

Village Greens

  • Which one is the Gnome Courier and where can I find him?
The blue gnome that runs back and forth on the walkways between the gnome encampments.

  • I can't find mushroom heads!!!
Mushroom heads are a rare drop. Refer to the Animated and Drops section for ways to get more drops and keep killing. It may take some time.

  • Where are the gnome encampments and which ones do I kill?
*** see Bria's Quest Guide for detailed quest info and a map for the encampments.

  • How do I get the General to come out?
Kill things around his house, make sure it's daytime. If he still won't come out after some time, Try a different server.
Bill's Ranch

  • How do I "Milk" a cow?
Walk up to one of the cows you see wandering around on the ranch and click on it. It may take a couple tries, and a few different cows, but eventually red message will pop up saying you're kneeling to milk the cow. You can then take the milk back to Purvis.
(would appreciate if someone can tell me the exact wording of the red message)

  • How do I "catch" a chicken?
Walk up to the chickens you see on the ranch, click them until one doesn't cluck away and follows you back to Rubella. May take a lot of chickens before one follows you.

  • How do I "plant" garlic?
After you've collected the three garlic sprouts that rancher Bill asked you to get, he'll want you to plant them. Walk around on the northern dark patch seen on the ranch (the southern one is where Purvis is). A red message will pop up when you've planted the sprouts.

Dead Man's Pass
*** see Bria's Guide for detailed quest information and maps for quest locations.

  • Where is Stoocie?
Keep going past the stairs, and you'll find her near where the crate is.

  • Where is the Purse/OMFG/Golashes?
All three of these spawns are rare - meaning they will not be there every time you enter DMP. Sometimes it takes many many tries to get all 3 of them.
The Purse is on the steps leading up the hill.
The Laceback Golashes is past the tombstones
The OMFG is in the area right before where OMGWTF spawns. It will be in the lower left hand corner of the screen.
    *map to come here*

  • Why won't Albert talk to me after I've killed the Purse/OMFG/Golashes?
Albert is just anti-social like that. He will often stop talking if you kill more than one of the rare spawns at a time. This is a glitch that will be fixed eventually.

  • What are the tombstones in DMP for?
You can play songs on them smile .
    *** See Tombstone Songs
Zen Gardens

  • Where is Katsumi's doll?
Kat's doll is now in an instance

  • Where are the Wish Tree visions?
None of them are in Zen Gardens.
    1) Windmill at Bass'ken Lake
    2) The Lighthouse at the Beach
    3) Under the archway at the Aqueducts

  • Where is Uncle Kin?
Go to the North West corner of the map - there will be a large bell where the Taiko Drums are. Click on it and you will be ported to Uncle Kin.

  • Should I help Uncle Kin or Katsumi?
It doesn't really matter - if you try to help Kin first, he'll tell you to go back to Katsumi, if you pick Katsumi, you help her first too.

Bass'ken Lake

  • I can't find the axe heads!!
They're a rare drop - refer to the Animated and Drops section to get more drops and keep killing. It may take some time.

  • Where is Mark's Ring?
The location of Mark's ring is random - best bet on finding it is circling the lake very closely until a red message pops up.
    Three likely locations are:
A small dip on the north shore of the lake where the saws are
Where the Grass fluffs spawn on the left shore of the lake
Slightly Right of the Null crystal

  • Where are the carrion/mother fluffs?
    Qixter
The Mother Fluffs move from "nest" to "nest" looking to see if there are fluffs near the nest already. If not, then the Mother Fluff will spawn new ones at the nest.

Sometimes she spawns Grass Fluffs, and sometimes she spawns Carrion Flower Fluffs. The Carrion Flower ones are more rare than the Grass Fluffs.

So if you're looking for Carrion Flowers, then harvest the Grass Fluffs and Mother Fluff might make new ones for you.

P.S., It has nothing to do with time of day. smile
    *quoted from Here

    Qixter
She spawns regularly (every 5-10 minutes) AND there are THREE mother fluffs, but they don't always spawn in the same place, which is probably what is confusing you.

We like to vary things a lot...so sometimes monsters spawn in multiple locations to keep you on your toes. smile
    *quoted from Here

    Valheita
I give you, an approximate map of nest sites (I.E. where the Mother Fluff will spawn either Grass or Carrion Flower Fluffs.) click for map

  • Where/when do the flying giftboxes come out?
They come out near the windmill when it gets dark or when someone is on the "Wailing Windmill" quest.
Gold Beach

  • Where are the mementos I need to find for Marcy?
They're located randomly in the sandy areas of the beach (not where the firepit is).

  • What's in that whirlpool up north and why do people always hang out there?
The whirlpool is a portal to the Shallow Seas and the areas beyond that.

  • Ok so... how do I get to the Shallow Seas?
You can go at any time if you're crewed with someone who has access to the seas.
To gain access to the seas, you must kill Stone Coatl as part of Rin and Lin's quest chain in Otami.

  • How do I get Landshark to come out? o3o~
No one is quite sure - we just know that Qix once mentioned that there IS a trigger to summon landshark, but no one has figured it out yet. He probably spawns on more populated servers because there's more people to set off the trigger.

Aqueducts

  • How do I complete the "star portal" quest? Nothing happens when I go in!
Normally, all you need to do is enter and get kiled by some bugs. There is currently a glitch where nothing will come out if your CL is under 8.0. As a temporary fix, go in with a higher CL player. Qixter said that this will be fixed in the next update.

  • How do I get Peter to go back to Barton? >_>
This is a frequently buggy quest... If George doesn't have a speech bubble, you can try different servers, or wait until the quest is fixed.

Otami Ruins and Cliffs
*** for detailed maps, see Heen-San's Guide

  • Where is the blood tree?
Northeast of the map, go up from where you talked to Blaze and around the large tree where the witchdoctors are.

  • Where do I find Rin and Lin (Twins)?
They're located in the cliffs at the Bottom Left of the Otami map.

  • I can't find a Jewel Eye!!
Refer to Animated and Drops section about how to get more drops and keep killing. This quest can take quite a while.

  • Where is Mika?
Mika is also in the cliffs where you talk to Rin and Lin - when you're in the cliffs, walk Right and you will find Mika on a ledge overlooking the Throne Room.

  • Where is the Gauntlet located?
Go up the steps to the waterfall where the feathered coatl's spawn - there will be a portal you can enter if you're on the quest.

  • How do I finish the gauntlet? @_@ it seems impossible!
Mainly... HEAL AND RUN LIKE HELL.
Some successful strategies include: defense buffs (teflon, turtle, potlid, etc.), speed boosters(pirate set, coyote spirit, fleet feet), offering a sacrifice (find a willing friend to die for you while you run), spamming heals while you run...
Note: Gauntlet is Dynamically Scaled so it adjusts to the CL of your crew.

  • Why didn't I get credit for klling Stone Coatl even though I saw a red message?
Make sure you're on its hate list (attacking it, or healing other attackers), and be alive when it dies.
You need to see "stone coatl 1/1" and your PDA needs to update, telling you to go back to the Twins.
Note: Stone Coatl is Dynamically Scaled so it adjusts to the CL and size of your crew.
Shallow Seas

  • How do I enter the seas?
Kill Stone Coatl as part of Rin and Lin's quest chain in Otami, or crew with people who've completed it.

  • How do I save Marshall?
Defeat Queen Lorelai and her two protectors (Aglaope, Raidne), then lead him through the sea ledge to where you overlook the Sealab Compound. He will thank you and give you a random reward. There is no actual quest for saving Marshall, but sometimes Jacques won't give you other quests until you've defeated the endboss.

  • Why did Marshall get stuck?
Marshall sometimes gets stuck if he's hit with Divinity.

Sea Ledge
Don't see many questions for this o3o~

Sealab Compound
Don't see many questions for this either O3O~

Endgame
Highlight for mild spoilers. (most of it's common knowledge)
  • There's an endboss to zOMG? o_O
We're currently in chapter 1 of zOMG. There is an Endboss to this Chapter.

  • Ok, how do I get to the endboss?
First you have to go to the shallow seas ->Undersea Ledge->Sealab Compound.
Then set off the three switches located there simultaneously.
You can then enter the chamber where the EndBoss is.

  • Who is the EndBoss O.O
    Go see for yourself 8D~

  • What are the endgame recipes?
Mechlab Bot, Null Fluff, Crystal Fluff, Sinister Scarf
You can only obtain each recipe once on an account. You usually one for each defeat of the endboss.

  • How many Null Fragments are needed for the endgame recipes?
    22 for the sinister scarf
26 for the other three recipes
    100 total

  • What do I do after I've defeated the endboss 4 times?
    ... whatever you want.
Suggestions: get those 5k Badges? Upgrade all 40 rings to CL10? Help people? Mess with people? Collect loot items? Kill him again? Prepare for zOMG! Expansion?

FAQ's about the FAQ

  • Where does the information in this guide come from?
The information listed here is a combination of personal experience, forum lurking, and Qixter stalking.

  • Can I use the info here for something?
