The only reason a kid would run away is if they want ADVENTURE! Which is totally a justifiable reason to run into a dangerous world with no one watching your back.

Or to find their real parents. Because no adopted/step kid is happy with his adoptive/step parents, and can only truly be happy with his biological mother and/or father.

Bonus points if they're a real orphan because their biological parents are deceased. Because dead parents are the best kind.

And if they're alive, they must have accept their child with open arms. They're not allowed to be ashamed of leaving them behind, because that would mean they did wrong. Anyone related to your MC as their Do No Wrong genes.

Unless they're the evil half-brother, but that's another story.
