It was my first day on the job. I was nervous but at the same time, excited. All the hardwork I've been doing for the past year was about to pay off: Learning how to defend myself, observing the etiquette for transactions, noting all the layers to the intricate system of the syndicate. I was given a dagger and a dry-cleaning ticket. The boss didn't have to tell me what they were for; he knew I was a smart guy. He merely told me to watch my back and sent me on my way. I walked casually to the dry-cleaner's but was careful not to make any actual eye contact with passers-by. The sky even played it's part by keeping itself covered, lending a cold and damp atmosphere to my walk. The bell to the dry-cleaner's door knocked about dully as I pushed through. Gaile, the proprietor, greeted me with the smile he gave all his customers and ask me what he could help me with. I presented him with the ticket and he took me to a backroom--a departure from the usual conduct. In this room lay a man, beaten and bloodied so badly that I nearly didn't recognize him: he was one of the top dogs in the syndicate, Barrel. He was known for being kind of a troublemaker who would push things too far. I guess he finally screwed the pooch. Gaile glance at my expression to see how I reacted and was disappointed with my calm. He shot Barrel in the head and grinned madly at his handiwork. "Why is it that a good guy can't catch a break? I try so hard to provide my family with just the bare minimum. I cooperate with criminals to keep them safe. I've provided loyalty to you animals for eight years and when I ask for a little more money, you kill my baby girl? Well, I've had enough of your bullying." He kept his gaze away from me, on my fallen comrade but I could still see tears fall from the doorway where I stood. I made no effort to respond to his speech or actions. Gaile started to sob in earnest and turned to me, "I'll kill you, y'know. I'll kill all of you." I kept up my silence. He uttered one last refrain, "Fine," and began shooting indiscriminately. I used this opportunity to rush him and stab his heart. It was at this moment that I truly felt alive. My ever-apparent inscrutable expression turned into gentle smile. This is why I got into this business, I had thought. It was this act of violence that set me up for the monster I have become.
