Regret.
It's a word everyone knows. It's something everyone has.
But what if the regret was so great, even after death, it bound you to earth? Some spirits, known more casually as "ghosts," remain in the land of the living. Usually, they're bound to an item considered to be their most treasured possession, ranging from something as simple as a doll to a priceless necklace. They're destined to wander forever in deep sorrow.
But what if they didn't have to? What if, a chosen few, could save the said-to-be lost spirits and help them repent for what keeps them in the living world? In an average neighborhood, on a grassy hill, a large mansion sits. The outside, and the majority of the inside, is burned from a fire that began long ago, and citizens often argue the place should be torn down. However, when one gets near such a place, even in a machine that might be used to knock it down, they begin to feel strange. These people are all recorded to have become extremely ill and all are said to have died.
Because of the damage it's hard to tell the place's age, but elder citizens up to age 93(the oldest living person in the neighborhood) can remember it being there during their childhood. However, there is something even stranger about the place then just it's incredibly long age. If you walk up the four flights of stairs and turn to your left, there will be a single door. This door shows no sign of aging, and has not been charred at all. The wood is still shining beautifully, the frame lined in gold.
The inside of the room appears to be like any other attic: various objects from different periods of time are scattered about. Simple things such as an old piano lined up against the right wall and an old towering wardrobe shuffled into a back corner, the locked door missing its key. A glass case that once held a doll is set on a wooden oak desk filled with papers written with ink long faded. If one would turn to leave the room, only then would they see. One side of the door, unlike the other, is damaged.
Someone seems to have carved many dates on it. These dates are not random, but most would be too edgy to consider the possibilities; considering, of course, they were brave enough to get that far in the first place.
The mansion remains untouched, unbothered; but the spirits within are restless. Are you brave enough to save them?
