Welcome to Gaia! ::

 Welcome to FIN, the Fishing Information Network - guides, tips, help, and information for the curious, the needy, and anyone else. Hope this helps anyone who needs this info. Please suggest any extra information you think might be needed. Please note that this is a guide, and tips. NOT instructions. By all means do things your own way if the things in this guide don't work for you. Don't flame someone over-the-top if they say a tip, you try it, and it doesn't work for you. Now prepare for some heavy reading! FIN has two very big aims. Like its name, FIN is a network. It is a guide based on the combined efforts of several people. FIN aims to expand this network as far as possible and unite as many guides - or guide-writers - under one roof to create a guide maintained by some of the best helping hands out there. This brings FIN to its second aim - to provide the best Gaia Fishing information resource in the Fishing forum with the help of all those users. This guide is owned by Spinall Dantrace, maintained by its staff, and helped out by you, the users. You can check out all the staff towards the bottom of this page. Check out the table of contents (next post) for the exact position. This guide is still under maintenance, so please bear with us until everything's sorted out. :) If you find any typos or mistakes, please contact a staff member about them and we'll try and fix them up. Note that this guide is written mainly in Australian English. Yes, Spinall Dantrace is Australian. So if you see words like "colour" instead of "color", then you'll know why. Keep in mind there is a glossary near the bottom of this first page, so if you can't figure out the meaning of some words, look them up there. Note: All images are hosted on my personal domain, Nova-CL.net. Hotlinking Gaia Site images only slows down the servers, and hotlinking my own images slows my host down too, so please save any images to your own host. Do not hotlink my own images - it is a violation of the disclaimer, which can be found at the bottom of any of the first three pages of this thread. Contents Yes, the new F.I.N. is several pages in length - 3 pages, to be exact. This is to make sure things don't get cluttered together and confusing, so people can get around the guide more easily. You can click the subject of that post to go directly there. If a post subject is --, that means that post is blank and reserved. Rules Yes, there are rules of conduct inside this thread. Please obey them. Breakage of rules results in you being banned from this guide for a month. Do not expect to have your questions answered while you are banned. 1. Ignorance of the rules does not provide you with immunity to them. 2. Obey the disclaimer. 3. These rules may change in anyway at anytime without notice. 4. No bumping if this topic is on the first page. Bumping is not permitted in the Fishing Forum unless the topic has moved off the first page. 5. No advertising. By all means request an affiliation, or that we link to you, but never advertise here. There's nothing ruder than someone saying "Excuse me, I have my own fishing guide. *link*" That used to happen a lot and it was extremely annoying. 6. Be courteous to other members. This means exercise politeness, and ultimately don't be rude. If someone asks an obvious question, instead of flaming them, direct them to where they can find the answer and/or answer them yourself. 7. This thread is not a place for bragging about your catches or exchanging fish. 8. No spamming or otherwise extremely unrelated chat. Blacklist: Those who have been banned for a month. None yet. Let's keep it this way! ^^ Page 1 - Post 4
How to get started Tutorial Okay. Here we go. Step-by-step. This is just a general guide for those beginners who can't entirely grab the concept of fishing, and how to fish. Preparing: 1. Go to Logan's store. This is named "The Ole Fishing Hole". It is the building at the bottom-left of Bass'ken Lake, the map just north of Barton Town. 2. Once inside you can buy bait and rods. The rest we'll get to later. The left shelf contains bait. For starters, we'll just fish with grade F. The shelf in the middle contains rods. For a beginner you only need a basic rod. Buy 1 grade F bait (25g) and a basic rod (100g). Starting up the game: 1. Go to a lake. Each lake has a difficulty. The three lakes are Bass'ken Lake (easy), Port of Gambino (medium), and Durem Reclamation Facility (hard). We'll just fish at Bass'ken for now. Go to Bass'ken Lake, mouseover the water, and click the image in the middle that reads "Fishing" (if you just click the water you'll be forwarded to the Gaia homepage instead). 2. Once the game window pops up, you'll be able to select what bait you want to play with. Select the grade F bait you bought earlier. A new page should load with the game. You need the latest Flash player for this. Once the game loads, press the "Start game" button. Once in game screen: 1. Click the arrows at the bottom-right to select your rod (if you have more than one). 2. When you have the rod you want to use, click once to start powering up your cast. The little bar in the middle of the bottom of the screen will have a little bar sliding up and down it. 3. Click again to cast out your rod. The closer the bar is to MAX, the further your rod will cast. Different rods have different casting distances. 4. Wait for a fish to be hooked. 5. Once a fish is hooked it will say so, a large ! sign popping up in the middle of your screen. The fishing screen will also shake slightly. The fishing screen is the view at the bottom-right. The left view has your map and bucket and the top view just has your avatar sitting on a wharf. 6. After your fish is hooked, it will automatically start being reeled in. Keep it between the red lines or it will escape. You can do this by countering its movements. When it swims left you pull it right, and vice versa. You can pull a fish right by moving your cursor towards the right of the fishing screen, and to the left by moving your cursor towards the left of the fishing screen. The further towards that side of the screen you move your cursor, the harder you will pull the fish in that direction. 7. If you successfully reel in the fish, it will show up on your screen showing its picture, name, and description, then go into your bucket (the 18 squares at the bottom-left of the screen). You can also catch junk. 8. After you have caught 18 fish, your bucket is full. Your catches will save. Do not exit the window, the window will automatically exit after your catches are saved. In Logan's Store / After Fishing: 1. If you still have bait to spare you can play again. Otherwise, go back to Logan's store. 2. Once in Logan's store, you can sell your fish if you want to sell them. You can do this the same way you sell items to stores. Below the store view, all your fish are listed, your fishing rods, and your bait if you have any. Click on a fish thumbnail if you want to sell it, type in the quantity of that fish you want to sell in the textbox that pops up, and click the "Sell" button. You cannot sell more fish than you have. 3. If you want, you can save up your fish to exchange them for hats. For normal fish you need 100 of that fish for its item. Rares need 10. Cans need 5000, boots need 1000 and tires need 500. Click the "Exchange Fish" sign at the top-left of the store view. If you have enough fish you will be given the option to exchange them for items. 4. You can also upgrade your rod. This will enhance its pulling strength, casting distance, and its distance between the red lines (range). The further you cast, the rarer fish you can catch (however actual rares can be caught anywhere). That about sums it up. Guides Bait deterioration: A-level, D-level and F-level bait Discovered by CuBiC 1st update: 22/12/04 after new build released 2nd update: 07/04/05 after tip from novarren With the new build of Gaia Fishing, it now does matter what bait you use. Even rares can be found with Grade F - though the better the bait the better your chances. Bait levels work like this - if bait is functioning at A-level, it's acting the same way as grade A bait. D- and F-levels mean whatever your bait is, it's functioning the same way as grade D and grade F bait respectively. How do bait levels function? Read on to find out. Grade A bait: This bait is fairly straightforward - it stays at A-level during all games. Grade D bait: Grade D remains at A-level for the first five games, then upon the sixth game it starts functioning at D-level, and remains like that for the rest of the games. Grade F bait: Being the lowest quality, it shouldn't be expected to function well for too long. This bait stays at A-level for the first two games, then drops down to D-level for the next three (games 3, 4 and 5), then upon game 6 it drops down to F-level and remains at that level for the rest of your games. All baits are reset to A-level again after 12 hours of no fishing. Note that moving to another map will not reset your bait level to A-level again - the bait levels function globally among all three bodies of water. This table shows what level baits function at during each game: Click here to view the table in HTML. Filtering In Port of Gambino and Durem Reclamation Facility, you can tell if your catch is junk. Junk does not drift for -shorter- periods of time than fish, as of yet. Junk tends to drift (swims in one direction before switching to the other direction) for a lot longer in these two areas. In Port of Gambino, Junk tends to drift for ~3 seconds, whereas real fish only drift for 1-2 seconds. Durem Reclamation Facility has a more subtle difference though, where junk drifts for roughly 2-3 seconds and fish 1-2. Experiment, and see if you can tell if something's going to be junk or a fish before you catch it. Memorize almost exactly how long junk drifts, if you can, rather than just counting the seconds. If you hook unwanted junk, just let it go by letting it drift outside the red lines. Keep in mind that, condraticting the rumours, rares do NOT swim like junk, so don't be afraid that a tin can might be a diamondback. Hooking more fish and less junk Old Man Logan says this: "The more ya fish, the less fish there are. So I'd suggest either giving mother nature some time ta recuperate or git some fancy bait ta lure out the remaining fish." Logan is talking about 'bait deterioration' (as CuBiC called it when he came across this theory). Read about it above under A-level, D-level and F-level bait. Timing out? If you time out while trying to save your catches, don't exit the window. Just click the button to reload the game, then when the start screen shows click the button to start game. Wait a few minutes and eventually it might save your previous catches. Warning: After you start the new game, don't cast out or it will save the catches for that game - no fish. Minor tips + Grade F bait maximizes profit and works in all areas. + Junk drifts for longer. See if you can identify junk before you can catch it by seeing if your catch is drifting longer than fish tend to. + THERE ARE NO CHEATS IN THIS GAME! People who find "cheats" are in fact finding glitches. Please do not exploit these glitches or you will be caught and banned! The admins have modified Fishing to record every single action you take in it. + Don't use a touchpad or a "baller" in fishing. They make controlling the rod difficult. Mice provide much better control. + Maximize your profit - don't end the game until your bucket is full! Page 1 - Post 7
Rumours When Gaia Fishing was in the development stages and in early release, a few rumours were spread, and some are still spread now. Here's where rumours are sorted out to be true or false. 1. You can catch a "2.5k fish" in Gambino which sells for 2.5k at the fishing shop - True, partially! False. This is just a rumour, as the fish supposedly acts like the Bucking Bino and prevents you from saving. Hence, how could someone find out it's worth 2.5k? UPDATE 1/12/04 - This rumour is TRUE. There are ancient fish you can catch in some of the maps. Buckin' Bino is the first I've discovered, which sells for 1,250g. These rare fish are called "Ancient" fish. 2. You can cheat in Gaia fishing. - FALSE. This rumour was just started by a few bragging newbies in Gaia. There are no cheats to this game, as it involves real gold and real items. The admins wouldn't allow cheating. All "Cheats" are just glitches, and using the glitches on purpose will get you banned. There are NO CHEATS in Gaia Fishing. 3. If you watch the spot just in front of the light-house in Bass'ken Lake long enough, a huge Loch Ness-like creature pops out from the water for a moment. - False. This is no more than hear-say. There is no animation anywhere in the game except in your own avatar's actions and the actions of the fish. So far, no fish hop out of the water, no dorsal fins appear at the surface, and no flying fish decide to go for a short leap & glide. So it is very unlikely there will be a Loch Ness creature popping its head out of the water. 4. Rares swim like junk. - False. No they do not. Ask anyone who has caught a rare before - rares swim very fast and have a lot of strength. 5. There is a new type of Gemback, a sapphireback. - False. The sapphireback is not a real Gaian fish. Novarren created it, the combined colourised images of a rubyback lion and an emeraldback lion, "Susan" the sapphireback. Sadly, some fell victim to gullibility and thought it was an actual fish, and now there are some rumours spreading about it existing. 6. A new kind of rod has been created, called the Star Rod. - False. The Star Rod simply does not exist. There are only 5 rods in existance in Gaia. Basic Fishing Rod, Strength Rod, Performance Rod and Distance Rod can be bought from the store, and Angelic Rod is not yet released to the public. If someone claims that there is a new rod apart form those 5, and they are not kaia9, 72squared, B5, DARKNRGY or an Admin, they are bluffing. Misinformation There are many failed attempts at guides out there. Someone attempts to start a guide, and it fails - generally because they're stating opinion instead of fact, or they've got completely the wrong facts, or their work is ripped off all other guides... the reasons go on. The fact is that there are a lot of guides out there - large or small - that shouldn't be taken seriously. These guides provide misinformation. However, on the other hand, there are plenty of guides that ARE worth reading. Here's some pointers on how to tell the difference between a bad guide and a good one. Note that these are only guidelines to be followed loosely, there are exceptions to these guidelines. 1. Check that the user who is starting the guide has been around long. There is a small chance that a user who signed up 2 days ago would know much about fishing. Mule accounts obviously are an exception to this rule, so in this case, check the user who is actually behind the mule and running the guide. 2. See what replies have been made. If renowned fishers like Novarren and Gaidin, and moderators like Nobara and Aquafire, are there commenting on the guide, pay attention to what they're saying - what they have to say could make the difference between you following the right or wrong information. 3. Compare the new guide's information to the information in other accurate guides such as Fishing Information Network, Gaidin's Fishing Guide, Transcendant's Filtering Guide, etc. If they provide contrasting information, there's a chance the new guide is inaccurate. However, not every new guide could turn out to be junk. If the user seems like they know what they're talking about, and they got most information correct, by all means give them a few correcting pointers - one day their guide may become very good indeed. Here is a collection of bad guides that have been made in the past. Remember, DO NOT TAKE THE INFORMATION IN THE GUIDES SERIOUSLY. Read the guide, and read the comments made in reply to it! If you would like any of these guides to be removed from this list for any reason, feel free to PM Spinall Dantrace to have it removed if there is a good reason. + silentshadow8 Page 1 - Post 8
Server-side bugs Even Gaia Fishing goes through bugs, not just the site in general. Here is an archive of past bugs, and information about them - the problem, error, date, fix, and when it was solved. As always, there are bugs where there is no fix - in which case, patience is the only way to deal with it. Server-side bugs are bugs which have something to do with data on Gaia Online, and usually have nothing to do with the user's computer. Multiplayer session malfunction Discovered on: Uncertain Problem: When entering multiplayer, you are returned with an error saying you've still got a game session in play. Cause: How you encounter this bug is unknown. Error (if any): Oooops, sorry, you have a current game in play (exact wording unknown) Fix: No fix. Solved on: Unsolved. Comments: It's uncertain how this bug is caused or when it started. Moderators say that it is unknown when the bug will be fixed, and sadly have also said there is no fix except to wait for it to be corrected by the staff members themselves. Session still in progress when it shouldn't be Discovered on: 20th June, 2005. Problem: When entering the game, a screen pops up saying there is an unsaved game in progress, and you are presented with two options - either to "Play Game" or "Quit". The Quit button works, but the Play Game button simply results in the same screen popping up again and again. Cause: How you encounter this bug is unknown. Error (if any): Exact wording unknown. Fix: Go to Logan's shop, and if you are presented with the option to end your fishing session, end it. (Note that your previous game's catches will be lost if you choose this option, so if you caught a fish (e.g. a rare) which you really want to hang on to, wait the error out and see if it will fix itself after some time.) Once in Logan's shop, whether or not you encountered the end-session screen, sell your bait - doesn't matter how much you sell, or what kind of bait you sell. The error should now be fixed. Fix discovered by anastasibeverhouson. Fix not yet tested. Solved on: Unsolved? Comments: It is not certain when this error first originated, but it was discovered by F.I.N. on 20th June when anastasibeverhouson encountered it. What causes this bug is also unknown, but thankfully there is a probable fix. Bait famine Discovered on: 19th June, 2005. Problem: After clicking the BUY button to buy some bait, the next page is returned as blank white. Cause: PHP error. Error (if any): Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /home/admin/public_html/gaia/store.php on line 668 Fix: None yet. Solved on: 21st June, 2005. Comments: This came out the moment they put in the new forum code. Chances are that something got messed up in the PHP scripts, or the mySQL tables. Multiplayer malfunction Discovered on: 19th June, 2005. Problem: Only pier 1 can be selected from the pier list - no pier 2 available. When you try to join any multiplayer rooms not yet taken down, this error is returned: "Oooops! Cannot connect to game server to load game information." Cause: How you encounter this bug is unknown. Error (if any): Cannot connect to game server to load game information. Fix: Supposedly, this isn't a bug, but Multiplayer mode is simply turned off. The fix will be when multiplayer is reactivated. Solved on: Uncertain. Comments: The second bug to come out to do with Fishing after the new forum code was implemented. Either there's some extreme lag preventing the game from connecting to the game server before a timeout is reached (if there is a timeout), or something has happened to the game server to make it inaccessible. Client-side bugs Client-side bugs are bugs that usually have nothing to do with the server - they are instead a bug on your computer, possibly a browser compatability error, a flash error, or something of the like. Shop items in strange positions Problem: Items in the fishing store are not on the shelves where they should be, and are instead floating somewhere else - on logan, on the floor, or somewhere outside the shop image altogether. Cause: Inconsistent DIV support. Error (if any): No error in most cases Fix: Try using another browser. Check there are no modules, programs, etc that would block DIVs from functioning properly. If possible, make sure your browser has full support of DIVs. Comments: Gaia relies on DIV tag properties to position certain things in Gaia, such as your avatar at the top-left of the screen, the memberlist / search / subscriptions links above, and store items. If your browser does not have proper support for DIV tags, or there is another program which would have an effect on HTML in your browser, it might stop DIVs from functioning to their full extent, and some things on Gaia - including store item positions - may not display correctly. Gaia Fishing won't show up or load Problem: Fishing won't show up. You are instead presented with an error saying you need to update your flash player. Cause: Flash version to old. Error (if any): (Exact wording unknown) Fix: Download the latest version of Macromedia Flash Player at this URL: http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash Comments: You must have a recent version of Flash Player to play Gaia Fishing. FAQ Q: How do I fish? A: Buy a rod and bait from Logan's shop, in Bass'ken lake (North of Barton). His shop is the hut at the bottom-left of the map. Click here to go there directly. Then go to Bass'ken lake and click the "Fishing" image that will pop up to fish. I suggest just starting off in Bass'ken Lake with a Basic Fishing Rod and some grade F bait. Q: How do I keep the fish between the red lines? A: You simply have to counter the fish's movements. If it moves left, you have to tug it to the right; and if it moves right, you have to tug it to the left. You can tug fish by moving your mouse left or right in the fishing screen (the part with the actual scenery in). The further to the right you have the mouse inside that screen, the harder you pull it to the right. The further to the left of the fishing screen, the harder you pull to the left. But don't pull too hard, or you'll drag the fish right out of that side and lose it! Q: Where do I buy fishing equipment? A: You can buy fishing equipment from "The Ole Fishing Hole", Old Man Logan's fishing store. His store is positioned in the bottom-left of Bass'ken Lake, the map just north of Barton. Click here to go there directly. Q: I can't find where to buy bait! A: In The Ole Fishing Hole, the shelf on the left, underneath the Fish Exchange / Rod Upgrade signs. Q: Where do you buy fishing rods? A: The shelf in the middle of The Ole Fishing Hole. Q: Does the time of day effect what fish I'm likely to catch? A: Yes, though only rares. You can check which rares can be caught at which times in the fish listing. Q: Does bait effect the fish I'm likely to catch? A: Yes. Better bait will give you chances of hooking rarer fish. Grade A is the best, and grade F is the worst. Start off with grade F if you're a beginner, though. Q: What does upgrading your rods do? A: It makes your range wider. In other words, the red lines of whatever rod you're using move further apart, so there's more room between the lines for the fish to swim around in without being caught. This is useful, though it only makes the range about 50-100px wider and is fairly expensive. So if you're not a dedicated fisher then an upgrade could just turn out to be a waste of gold. Though, if you are, 100px more range is a lot of difference, and it also increases the casting range. Certain fish are only caught at certain ranges. E.G., a strength rod couldn't reach far enough in Durem Reclamation Facility to hook a Boldur, but a strength rod plus could. If you're a dedicated fisher, an upgraded rod could make a huge difference. Q: I keep trying to sell my fish, but Old Man Logan says I don't have enough. A: You're trying to use the exchange, where you trade in many fish for items - not sell them. If you want to sell your fish to Old Man Logan, you click on the thumbnail of the image down in the inventory at the bottom of the shop, next to your avatar, in the main shop view (not in the fishing exchange). Type in the amount of that fish that you want to sell and click the "Sell" button. It's the same way you sell items to stores except there's quantity too. Click here to visit Novarren's sticky - it contains thumbnails and previews of various exchange items, to help you decide if you really want to exchagne your fish. Q: I suck at fishing. How do I get better? A: Chances are you're in a hard area. The different areas have difficulty levels. Bass'ken lake: Easy. Port of Gambino: Medium. Durem Reclamation Facility: Hard. So, just practice until you're good in one area, then step up to the next difficulty. Rods don't help you that much, trust me. It relies all in your skill, not in the rod. And remember, practice makes perfect! Q: Does changing your location in a area make a difference to what you're likely to catch? A: The only thing changing your location in an area does is give you a new bit of scenery to look at, as far as I can tell. It does not have an effect on what fish you'll catch. Q: I can't catch anything in Durem/Gambino! A: If you're new to fishing, you shouldn't start out there. Restated, the difficulties are as follows: Bass'ken lake: Easy. Port of Gambino: Medium. Durem Reclamation Facility: Hard. You should always start off in Bass'ken Lake if it's your first time. Once you gain the hang of fishing there there, try out Gambino. If it's too hard, you should go back to Bass'ken for a while. When you eventually get used to Gambino's fish, take a step up and try out Durem. Just don't rush yourself. Q: How many fish do I need for exchanging? A: You need 100 fish to exchange them for their item. Rares are the exception, where you only need 10 fish. You need 5000 cans for a tin hat, 1000 old boots for patchwork boots, and 500 tires for tire-on-my-head. Precise amounts are listed in the Exchange Items List. Click here to visit Novarren's sticky - it contains thumbnails and previews of various exchange items, to help you decide if you really want to exchagne your fish. Q: Do I have to give in all the fish at once to recieve my item or can I just do it bit-by-bit? A: You must hand them in all at once from your inventory. Logan will not let you trade in fish bit by bit, and selling your fish to him does not result in gaining an exchange item. Q: Where/how can I sell fish? A: You can sell them either back to Logan, the same way you would normal items to stores - underneath the shop view you can click the fish you want to sell, and follow the options. The other choice is at the marketplace, where you can usually sell a little more. Though for that, you require a Vending Pass. This can be bought from the bank in the southeast of Isle de Gambino for 1,000g; you must have bought a trading pass at the bank for 500g first though. Q: What's the best spot in an area to fish? A: "Hot spots" and "sweet spots" where you supposedly catch more fish than other spots in an area don't exist. Full stop. Q: Which is the best rod? A: There's no "best" rod. There's just which ones suit the user's needs and which ones don't. You can read an essay in the Rods section, second post of the second page of this guide, which goes into more depth about this issue. Q: I sold my 100 fish to the store and I didn't get the free hat for it! A: You don't get the relevant hats when you've sold a total of 100 fish to the Ole' Fishing Hole. What you do is you click on the sign at the top-left of the shop view which reads "Exchange Fish". You exchange fish for items there. Note that you must be holding the amount of fish you need - you can't get an Orange Guppy Hat if you've sold 50 orange guppies and you're still holding 50 orange guppies, you have to be holding all 100 orange guppies in your inventory. Click here to visit Novarren's sticky - it contains thumbnails and previews of various exchange items, to help you decide if you really want to exchagne your fish. Q: Why are there so many Rares like Diamondbacks, but so little easy-to-catch Rares like Candy Stripers? Shouldn't there be more Candy Stripers than Diamondbacks? A: It's a matter of preference of lakes. People tend to move away from Bass'ken and into the difficult area, Durem, when they get skilled, and stop fishing in Bass'ken - therefore the people with the skill to catch a rare in Bass'ken aren't there to actually catch them. Thankyou, Novarren. Q: Why don't my fish show up in bank trades? A: Trading gaming items (including fish and rods) in the bank has been disabled. Gaming items can still be put up in the marketplace or sold back to store, but cannot be traded between accounts. Q: What do you need to catch Rares? A: Any rod, and A-level or D-level bait (bait levels can be read about in Guides). Unlike other fish, Rares can be caught anywhere on a lake - there's no minimum casting distance, meaning you can use any rod. Just cast, and whether or not you hook a Rare is left up to luck. Q: Does your bait and rod affect the fish you catch? A: Yes. Some rods can cast further than others. The further you cast the better the fish you can catch. Here's the distances: Basic Rod: Normal: 70ft Plus: 80ft Strength Rod: Normal: 60ft Plus: 75ft Performance Rod: Normal: 75ft Plus: 90ft Distance Rod: Normal: 90ft Plus: 100ft And here's the ranges: Junk: 25 ft to 100 ft Small: 25 ft to 100 ft Medium: 45 ft to 100 ft Big: 65 ft to 100 ft Rare: Rangeless, can be caught anywhere. So, effectively, by getting a better rod and casting further you can catch better fish. Which brings me to my second point - bait. Bait just makes you more likely to catch better fish. You're much more likely to catch Biters with A-level than you are with F-level. And you're more likely to get junk with F-level than with A-level. Q: I sold my fish to Logan but he didn't give me my gold! What's wrong? A: If you scrolled down below the store view, clicked the fish you wanted to sell, typed in the quantity and pressed the sell button, at least you sold it right. You don't get the gold from the fish you sell INSTANTLY. Go to any other page (don't refresh or you'll be submitting the formdata for selling your fish again, which you might not want to do) and then check your gold. Your gold should now be raised by the amount you got for the fish. If you still don't have your gold after visiting another page, wait for a few minutes, the server may be lagging. If you still don't have your gold after a while, it's most likely a bug; PM an online Omnimoderator (they fix account issues) and explain the situation to them. Make sure to mention what fish you sold and how many of each fish, as well as what time you sold the fish, as this can sometimes be vital information. If there are no omnimoderators currently online, write the information in a text file or some other kind of text document, and when you next see an omnimoderator online, PM them. If you haven't seen any omnimoderators online after a day or two, it would be a good idea to PM an offline one anyway. Just keep in mind that some moderators do not like being PMed while offline, as if they need to inquire at all, you might be offline by the time they're on and fixing the problem could take a while. Q: I saved my bucket, but when I went to the fishing store, the fish I had just caught weren't there. Why's that? A: When your bucket becomes full, the game saves itself. Once it's saved, it exits itself too. If you exit the window manually, chances are it hasn't yet saved properly, and your catches might not be recorded. If, however, you did let your game save properly and not close the window yourself, it is most likely a bug. You should PM a Fishing Forum Omnimoderator - they solve account issues. You can view the fishing forum's moderators by going up to the top of the main fishing forum page, and under Gaia Gaming -> Gaia Fishing!, click the link which reads View Forum Moderators. There it lists all the fishing forum's moderators; Omnimoderators are the ones listed in green. Q: What's the point in fishing? A: There's no specific "point" in fishing. There are aims, and things you can do. The aim of Fishing is to catch the best fish you can, and to get a good score - though you don't necessarily have to adhere to that. The things you can do are upgrade your rod, buy new rods, and get bait - and after fishing, you can exchange fish for hats, or sell the fish back to Old Man Logan or on the market to another user. Q: Can we eat the fish we catch? A: No. What's the point in eating them if our avatars don't get hungry? It would just be discarding them and getting nothing from it. And no, the admins are not planning on converting Gaia Online into a giant Sims-like game anytime soon, so your avatars will not be getting hungry. Q: What is the most profitable way to fish? A: There are many different strategies for profit in Fishing - not just one best one. Some strategies require different baits and rods than others, however most require a high level of skill in filtering. But the best advice you can get is from the users themselves who get a lot of profit. Q: Gaia fishing sucks! A: This isn't a question, though I feel I have to answer to it anyway. Why on earth do we keep having people coming into the fishing forum and saying fishing is crap and/or worse than another game? Gaia's Fishing population doesn't care - they like fishing, and no-one's forcing you to play or to be here. If you don't like fishing, you have every right to not play it and not come to the Fishing forum, just don't rant on about how you think Gaia fishing is crap and/or worse than something else - no one appreciates that. Q: What is the best time to catch [fish name]? A: There's no best time to catch any fish except rares. All fish can be caught anytime, excluding rares - in each lake, one rare can be caught at daytime, one at nighttime, and one at dusk or dawn. All other fish are not at all affected by the time of day. You can check what time certain rares come out in the fish listing. Q: How can I see the fish I already have? A: Go to The Ole Fishing Hole and they're listed at the bottom where your items would normally be listed in the other stores. You can also see them under "My Inventory" under the Game tab. Q: I tried to exchange ## fish with Logan but he said I didn't have enough! Why can't I exchange my fish? A: You need to have at least 100 of one kind of fish to trade it for an exchange item. Actually, on top of that, for any kind of fish, you need 100 of that fish to exchange it for an exchange item (except for junk and rares, I'll get to that later). Note that you can't trade 50 orange guppies and 50 yellow guppies for an item - you have to trade either 100 orange guppies or 100 yellow guppies. That's just an example though - you can exchange any fish or piece of junk for items in the exchange. Different kinds of fish require different amounts for exchanging: 100 small fish (guppies, seedkins, pebbo feeders) can be exchanged for a cap. 100 medium fish (bass, rainbow trouts, biters) can be exchanged for a helm. 100 big fish (stripers, tunas, boldurs) can be exchanged for a helmet. 10 rares can be exchanged for a mask. What kind of cap/helm/helmet/mask you recieve depends entirely on what fish you trade in. For example, 100 red guppies will give you a red guppy cap, but 100 brown bass will give you a brown bass helm. This doesn't apply for junk, as there's only one kind of old can, one kind of old boot, and one kind of old tire. While we're on that track: 5,000 old cans can be exchanged for a tin hat. 1,000 old boots can be exchanged for patchwork boots (the only exchange item that doesn't go on your head). 500 old tires can be exchanged for tire-on-my-head. Click here to visit Novarren's sticky - it contains thumbnails and previews of various exchange items, to help you decide if you really want to exchagne your fish. Q: What's the rarest fish of all? A: Rares. All rares are just as rare as each other, none is found with more or less luck than another. If you're talking on terms of the least-owned fish, however Candy Striper is the one fish of which the least have been caught, because it only comes out for about two hours at a time, and not many fishers with the skill to catch a Candy Striper actually fish at Bass'ken. Q: Why should I fish? A: Why are you asking someone else? We can only tell you why we fish, not why you should. There is no reason you "should" fish, just why you would want to fish. Fish, and find out why you would want to keep fishing for yourself. Find out if you'd like to do it for profit, for items, for the highscores, or for the sake of having fish. Q: I've noticed that different areas have different fish in them. Which fish are there in the different areas? A: Here's a list of all the fish in the different areas. More detail on each fish can be found in the fish listings on the second page of this guide. Bass'ken Lake fish: Smalls: Red Guppy, Yellow Guppy, Orange Guppy Mediums: Brown Bass, Blue Bass, Green Bass Bigs: Gray Striper, Blue Striper, Green Striper Rares: Mutha Guppa, Big Mouth Bass'terd, Candy Striper Port of Gambino fish: Smalls: Pink Seedkin, Green Seedkin, Blue Seedkin Mediums: Frozen Rainbow Trout, Warm Rainbow Trout, Cool Rainbow Trout Bigs: Dicy Tuna, Icy Tuna, Spicy Tuna Rares: Chargin' Chino, Tootin' Tino, Buckin' Bino Durem Reclamation Facility fish: Smalls: Black Pebbo Feeder, Brown Pebbo Feeder, White Pebbo Feeder Mediums: Black Rocque Biter, Bluestone Biter, Pyrite Biter Bigs: Slate Boldur, Stone Boldur, Sand Boldur Rares: Diamondback Lion, Rubyback Lion, Emeraldback Lion. Q: Is fishing profitable? A: You can make a lot of gold from fishing if you know how to. Some users make quite a lot of gold from it - Novarren can make 10k per day. So yes, it's potentially very profitable. Q: How do I catch a rare fish? I haven't caught a single one so far! A: Certain rares can only be caught at certain times of day in the different areas. You must also have D or A level bait (not grade, level) to hook a rare. And a lot of skill to reel it in. But you can't blame yourself for not catching a rare. Like their namesake, they are rare. Even some of the best fishers would have to be extremely lucky to catch enough rares for a helmet in a whole year. Q: Which colour fish is worth the most? A: All three types of a fish are worth the same to the store. All three boldurs have the same price, all three biters have the same price, all three tunas have the same price, etc. Though in the marketplace, the new fish (ones that were added in Fishing v1.5, e.g. Black Pebbo Feeder and Dicy Tuna) tend to be worth the most. Additionally, rares tend to have settled out, though Candy Striper is currently worth the most due to how few there are. Q: Do certain fish go for certain kinds of bait? Is there a difference between the bait and does the bait you use really matter? A: Bait does make a difference, though it doesn't exactly make you catch one kind of fish more than the other. One kind of bait will not attract more red guppies than another kind. Better bait attracts rarer fish, not certain fish of the same rarity. Higher-level bait (Read about bait levels in the Guides section!) attracts rarer fish more often. You will still catch some small fish, but your chances of hooking (not necessarily catching, check the difference in the glossary) mediums and bigs are increased - A-level having the highest effect, D-level the lowest effect, and F-level no effect (it's already as bad as it can get, how can we say it improves anything?). Higher-quality bait is very important when you're trying to aim for rarer fish. Keep in mind that the grade of bait you use only has a subtle effect on actual rare fish like the lionfish (Durem R.F.), fishinos (P.O. Gambino), etc. Q: Hey can anybody give me tips for fishing? A: Yes I can. This is a -guide-. It is full of tips. Read it. Q: There's something this guide doesn't explain that I'm trying to find out. A: Feel free to PM me with your questions and I'll explain them to the best of my ability. Glossary This is an A-Z glossary of fishing-related words, terms and expressions. If you don't understand a word, just look it up here - if there's a word missing which you don't understand, feel free to ask. Key: Any words in green are defined elsewhere in the glossary. If a word is commonly confused with another, then at the end of its definition it will have a word confusion information snippet in brackets. In the word confusion, it states all confused words - the correct word(s) is(are) underlined. After the definitions of the three fishing areas, in bold will be listed the difficulty of the area. After a word in the glossary, a letter (or several letters) may follow after it to classify it. These are the classifications: (n.) - Noun (object) (pn.) - Proper Noun (someone's name, etc) (v.) - Verb (action) (adj.) - Adjective (descriptive word, e.g. black cat, fantastic deal.) (p.) - Phrase (not really belonging to any of the above, and an expression.) (nr.) - Not related. This is something that is involved with real life fishing, but not Gaia Fishing. This is used as well as any other classification. (word confusion) - This is the wrong word to use for something, or the wrong spelling of the word. You will be pointed towards the right word. This is used as well as any other classification. Now, onto the definitions. Area (n.): A body of water in Gaia which you can catch fish in - a lake, river, stream, even the sea itself. The areas in which you can fish in Gaia are Bass'ken Lake (one map north of Barton Town), Port of Gambino (one map north of Bass'ken Lake / one map south of Isle de Gambino) and Durem Reclamation Facility (one map east of Durem). Bait (n.): This is placed on the hook, and is most commonly worms. The higher quality bait you choose - F being the lowest, D in the middle and A the highest - the higher your chance of hooking a rare fish. (Word confusion: Bait/worms. People often complain about people saying "worms" instead of "bait". Bait and worms are the same thing.) Bass'ken Lake (n.): A lake just north of Barton Town. Old Man Logan's fishing store, The Ole Fishing Hole, can be found at the south-west of this map. This map is also referred to as "Bass'ken". Difficulty: Easy. Bigs (n.): See Big fish. Big fish (n.): The second-rarest type of fish, it is rather hard to reel in and not often hooked without good bait and a good fishing rod. They are also known as bigs. Bass'ken Lake bigs: Grey/Green/Blue Striper. Port of Gambino bigs: Icy/Dicy/Spicy Tuna. Durem Reclamation Facility bigs: Sand/Slate/Stone Boldur. Bucket (n.): This is simply your average bucket, or a specially-made one for fishing. A bucket is used to store your fish in once you have caught them. In Gaia Fishing, you may store up to 18 fish in your bucket before the round ends and you must either quit or choose another kind of bait to use. Cap (n.): A Fish Exchange item obtained by exchanging one hundred of one kind of small fish in the Fish Exchange. Catch (v.): See Caught. Caught (adj.): When a fish has been hooked and reeled in out of the water and safely in your hands or bucket, it is considered caught. Difficulty (adj.): How 'easy' it is to catch fish in an area. This is affected by several factors - how strong the fish pull, how hard they pull, and overall how hard it is to reel in the fish. Durem Reclamation Facility (n.): What fish are doing in a water filtering and cleaning basin, no-one knows, but this is the hardest and most profit-offering area in Gaia. It is found just east of Durem. This map is also referred to as "Durem" when talking fishing-wise, but not other times. Difficulty: Hard. Filtering (n.): A difficult-to-learn but extremely useful technique. A master at filtering can identify what fish (or junk) they have hooked before they've even reeled in the fish, simply by observing how it moves. This technique comes in handy when you only want to catch one or more specific type(s) of fish. Fish (n.): A marine animal with scales, and fins for maneuvering. In Gaia Fishing, your aim is to catch these, however junk can interfere. There are four kinds of fish - smalls, mediums, bigs and rares (from most common to rarest) - and three of each kind in each of the three areas - twelve fish in each area, thirty-six fish altogether - thirty-nine if you include junk, which is usually the case. Fish Exchange (n.): A place in Logan's store where you can exchange fish for Fish Exchange items - in all cases except one, hats (old boots for patchwork boots being the exception). A hefty amount of fish are needed for each item, so you'd better be prepared. One hundred of any kind of small fish can be exchanged for its respective cap. One hundred of any kind of medium fish can be exchanged for its respective helm. One hundred of any kind of big fish can be exchanged for its respective helmet. Ten rare fish can be exchange for its respective mask. Junk numbers follow no pattern like this - five thousand tin cans can be exchanged for a tin hat, one thousand old boots can be exchanged for patchwork boots, and five hundred big old tires can be exchanged for tire-on-my-head. (Word confusion: Fish Exchange/Fishing Exchange. "Fish", not "Fishing".) Fish Exchange item (n.): An item obtained by trading in the required amount of fish or junk in the Fish Exchange. (Word confusion: Fish Exchange item/Fishing Exchange item. "Fish", not "Fishing".) Fishing Exchange (word confusion) (n.): Correctly known as the Fish Exchange[/color. See Fish Exchange. Fishing Exchange item (word confusion) (n.): Correctly known as a Fish Exchange item. See Fish Exchange item. Fishino (n.): This is a nickname for the rares from Port of Gambino. The nickname is earned by the fact that all the rares in Port of Gambino have a name ending in "ino" (Chargin' Chino, Buckin' Bino, Tootin' Tino) - and obviously, they're fish - so fish + ino = fishino. Fishing Pole (word confusion) (n.) (nr.): This is a mere stick/pole with a line on it. It is not used in Gaia Fishing. The correct term is Fishing Rod when referring to what you use in Gaia Fishing. (Word confusion: Fishing Rod/Fishing Pole. A fishing rod is what a fisherman uses - it has a reel, a line, and is flexible. A fishing pole however is merely a stick with a line on it, used by eskimos.) Fishing Rod (n.): A tool used for fishing. It is comprised of several basic parts - rod, reel, handle and line. In Gaia, you only have to worry about what the rod is made of, and what bait you use. There are five kinds of rods - basic, strength, performance, distance and the legendary angelic rod. (Word confusion: Fishing Rod/Fishing Pole. A fishing rod is what a fisherman uses - it has a reel, a line, and is flexible. A fishing pole however is merely a stick with a line on it, used by eskimos.) Fishing Rod Plus (n.): Any upgraded version of a fishing rod. It has increased statistics and performance compared to its non-upgraded counterpart. Upgrades cost a lot of gold - from 10,000 upwards - but in most situations, it's very worth your while to upgrade your fishing rod. Fishing Rod Upgrade (n.): See Upgrade. Fishing store (n.): Any place where you can buy supplies for fishing. Old Man Logan owns the only fishing store in Gaia, The Ole Fishing Hole. Fishing-wise (p.): Of or relating to fishing. Game (n.): A leisurely activity. Gaia Fishing is a game, and in Gaia Fishing, the word 'game' also has its own meaning - see round. Gemback (n.): A nickname for Lionfish, the rares found in Durem Reclamation Facility, sprouting from the fact that all the rares there have a name comprised of a gem, followed by "back" - diamondback lion, rubyback lion and emeraldback lion. So they're commonly nicknamed "gembacks". Gembacks are less commonly known as jewelbacks. Helm (n.): A Fish Exchange item obtained by exchanging one hundred of one kind of medium fish in the Fish Exchange. Helmet (n.): A Fish Exchange item obtained by exchanging one hundred of one kind of big fish in the Fish Exchange. Hooking (v.): When a fish bites your line and becomes caught on the hook, the fish is considered "hooked". A fish is not caught until it is out of the water and in your hands. Hunter (n.): See Mercenary. Hunting (v.): Fishing in order to catch a particular fish, not necessarily to make profit. Usually when you want to get a particular Fish Exchange item. Jewelback (n.): See Gemback. Junk (n.): The pests in Fishing. There are three kinds of junk which are found in each area, and this doesn't differ from area to area (unlike with fish) - old can, old boot and big old tire. These can only be sold for 1, 2 and 3 gold respectively to Logan, though due to how many of each item you need to obtain the respective Fish Exchange item, their values are somewhat higher in the marketplace. These objects interfere with a user trying to catch fish, and catching these can be avoided by using a technique called filtering. Lionfish (n.): The proper name for a rare from Durem Reclamation Facility, coming from the fact that all the rares have a name ending in Lion (rubyback lion, diamondback lion, emeraldback lion). Lionfish are also known as Gembacks and Jewelbacks. Logan (pn.): See Old Man Logan. Mask (n.): A Fish Exchange item obtained by exchanging ten of one kind of rare fish in the Fish Exchange. Mediums (n.): See Medium fish. Medium fish (n.): A little rarer and harder to catch than small fish, there are three kinds in each lake. They are also known as mediums. Bass'ken Lake mediums: Brown/Green/Blue Bass. Port of Gambino mediums: Cool/Warm/Frozen Rainbow Trout. Durem Reclamation Facility mediums: Black Rocque/Bluestone/Pyrite Biter. Mercenary (n.): One who is hired by another user to collect a certain number of one or more kinds of fish. Misinformation (n.): Information provided which is more or less convincing enough to be believed to be fact, but is incorrect. Old Man Logan (pn.): The owner of the fishing store, also known as Logan. He gives subtle advice through what he says, and is always willing to supply you with whatever you need fishing-wise. He is remarkably similar to the X-men character, Wolverine, whose real name is Logan, due to his hairstyle, the hooks on his gloves, and his name. Ordinaries (n.): Fish which are not rares. Pole (n.): See Fishing Pole. Port of Gambino (n.): Also known as Gambino (fishing-wise, but no other time), this map is the start of Gaia's vast ocean which borders Isle de Gambino, containing a crookedly rectangular wharf, the inside of which is home to twelve different kinds of fish. Difficulty: Medium. Rares (n.): See Rare fish. Rare fish (n.): The four rarest fish in each area. They are also commonly referred to as rares. Bass'ken Lake rares: Big Mouth Bass'terd, Candy Striper, Mutha Guppa, ??. Port of Gambino rares: Buckin' Bino, Chargin' Chino, Tootin' Tino, ??. Durem Reclamation Facility rares: Diamondback Lion, Emeraldback Lion, Rubyback Lion, Sapphireback Lion. Reeling in (v.): When you wind up the reel to drag the fish towards you and out of the water, this is called "reeling in" the fish. This takes place between hooking the fish and actually catching it. Rod (n.): See Fishing Rod. Rod Upgrade (n.): See Upgrade. Round (n.): One round of fishing is the period of time in which you are fishing - from when you choose your bait, lasting until when your bucket becomes full after 18 things (fish or junk) have been caught. Smalls (n.): See Small fish. Small fish (n.): The most common kind of fish, also known as smalls. There are three small fish in each lake. They are the easiest to catch. Bass'ken Lake smalls: Orange/Yellow/Red Guppy. Port of Gambino smalls: Blue/Green/Pink Seedkin. Durem Reclamation Facility smalls: Black/White/Brown Pebbo Feeder. Snag (v.) (also snagged, adj.) (nr.): This is when the hook of a rod catches on something and possibly can't be retrieved - that something could be anything at the bottom of the water, such as a rock or an item lodged into the ground. Snagging only happens in real life, and doesn't happen at all in Fishing, so you don't need to worry. The Old Fishing Hole (word confusion) (n.): See The Ole Fishing Hole. The Ole Fishing Hole (n.): The one and only fishing store in Gaia, owned by Old Man Logan. Everything you could ever need fishing-wise can be found here. This store is the hut at the southwest of Bass'ken Lake. (Word confusion: The Ole Fishing Hole/The Old Fishing Hole. The difference between these names is very subtle, so no user can really be blamed for muddling them up. Sometimes the store is referred to as The Old Fishing Hole, but it is actually called The Ole Fishing Hole - people sometimes use "old" instead of "ole" in the name.) Upgrade (v.): Upgrading a fishing rod converts it to a fishing rod plus. Disclaimer Why a disclaimer? Because there are some people out there who continually like to do things I don't want them to do - e.g. hotlinking images and wasting my site's bandwidth, and even once a user reposted my whole guide claiming it was their own work. To avoid situations like those again, I've been forced to add a disclaimer, aka. Terms of Service, or very simply put, rules regarding usage. Disclaimers and ToS's are forms of legal documents and must be obeyed. Last update to disclaimer in general: July 6th, 2005. Last update to disclaimer terms: June 18th, 2005. Ignorance of these terms does not provide you with immunity. It is your own responsibility to make sure an action you are about to perform is allowed. 1. This disclaimer may be changed in any way at anytime with or without notification. It is your responsibility to make sure you are not breaking a disclaimer rule. 2. All pictures of fish, fishing rods, bait, game screen images and other Gaia Online images used in this thread are copyright Gaia Online and AniHQ, unless they have been edited to demonstrate or convey information (in this case, the images would be copyright their editors as well as Gaia Online and AniHQ). 4. When posting information from this guide, make sure to give credit - the credit line must be visible and at least size 9, somewhere within your post. 5.
