She was lost in a nightmare, again. These dreams seemed to be plaguing her lately. Unrelentless despair, sadness and lost swamped her like a tsunami wave. She always woke up crying after these dreams, without being able to clearly remeber the events that cause such feelings within her. However, tonight seemed to be different.

The dreamscape was dark and nightmarish as expected lately. The sky swam above her sickly green and gray, ossilating to black. The ground was a patchwork of moving shadows that were moving much too fast to be normal. Rubble and twisted forms sprung from the ground to vanish again. Everthing kept shifting.

Pika was lost.

She looked all around and all that could be seen was chaos and darkness. For some reason, the shadows seemed to steal her very breath as guilt pressed down on her. Guilt. Choking and hacking she tried to run. Of course that never seemed to work and she ended up staying exactly where she had started.

There was no sound. The velvet shadows drank it up endlessly. Yet, something began to weave through the silence.

Bells? Tinkling? She looked around for the cause. Suddenly, the silence broke in full. Not only could she hear bells, but a gentle wind, bird song and buzzing bees. The wind in the tress, the bubbling brook, the quiet that is not silence.

And then, she could see it. Like a gentle wave it swept her up and filled her senses till it was real. Replacing chaos with peace.

Breathing deeply, Pika slept with no tears.

The next night she wondered if her cycle of nightmares had been broken. Laying down her head, she pulled her pink hair out from behind her neck and spread it up across the pillow. Sighing, she drifted in the warm darkness until she slipped off into sleep.

It was dark. So very dark. Pika was filled with trepidation - this didn't feel like a good dream. Waving out her arms she reached, looking for touch. There was nothing.

She called into the black, "Anyone there? Can anyone hear me?" 'Do I want to be heard? She again tried reaching into the darkness and then thinking herself clever, she bent down to touch what she was standing upon. There was nothing.

And then she fell.

Straight down. Through the blackness she dropped. Since there was nothing to be seen, she couldn't tell the speed at which she was falling but her ears gave indication of it being very, very fast.

Face down, face up, summersaulting - Pika wasn't sure she cared to know. Looking wide-eyed, frantically trying to grab, seeing-finding nothing...but then a spot of gray appeared in her line of sight. And it grew. Brighter and brighter from gray to white and then she could see everything.

It wasn't warm anymore. Air and wind chilled her as deeply as the sight of the world rushing up to meet her. At this point Pika was screaming. Freezing tears coursed up her cheeks and across her ears to be left behind. She couldn't keep her eyes open. But even shut there was no darkness to be found. She now regreted leaving the dark.

Feeling the tired ache of her muscles, Pika lay in bed under the warm plush covers. Warm and dark. Sighing contentedly she let her mind wander as sleep drifted over her thoughts.

Stepping into the dream, she realized there was no nightmare lurking this time. She wasn't sure why she knew this, but there was a feeling of calm acceptance rather then trepidation in this night's dream.

Walking around slowly she kept her eyes closed; simply feeling what was around her. She felt barefoot, with grass tickling up between her toes. The air was cool, and the light warm where it touched her skin. Taking a deep breath she smelt the dreamscape. It smelt like spring.

Sweet and new curled around her head like a gauzy scarf seductively stroking skin. Pika listened and could hear almost silence. The sound of buzzing, twittering, whispering and burbling came from all around. 'Definately a more plesant dream this time', she thought.

Finally, she opened her eyes.

Looking around her the first thing to draw her attention was the sky. Vast and luminous, it stretched overhead, spiralling up into space. And it was a rose-pink fading to starlight and indigo at the highest point. Fluffy clouds like lost sheep meandered through the blush heavens.

Sighing at it's breathtaking beauty, she drew her eyes earthward and pursued the land around her. She was at the lowest point of a huge bowl shaped meadow. The grass beneath her feet was a soft lilac-green and dotted with tiny flowers of every shade and hue. There were also small creatures darting from flower to flower; bees and butterflies she assumed, though they didn't look quite right.

At the top of the bowl meadow she could see a line of trees on one side. All were covered with what appeared to be flowers, though at this distance it was possible they could be soft peach leaves. To her left there was a pool of water with a small creek feeding into it down the meadow's slope.

Walking towards the pond she could see more darting figures in the water.
Scarlet coloured and ruby flashing, they appeared to be small fishes as she kneeled beside the pool. Trailing her hand through the water they swept in and around her fingers feeling so delicate as to be a trail of bubbles.

Pika laughed in delight as a tide of joy rose in her. 'What a wonderful, glorious place!' she internally exclaimed. 'This has to be some kind of mental retreat. I only wish I had dreampt of it sooner'

'Dreampt of it sooner...' a voice echoed.

Pika looked around startled. "Who said that?" she spoke. There was no reply. Coming up to her feet, she took a hesitant step and looked around. Nothing appeared to be different. No one seemed to be there.

Wonderingly Pika looked up the slope towards the source of the pond and noticed a trail of pink flowers carpeting along side the burbling creek. 'That's odd' she thought. 'Why are they perfectly in a line?' Curious, she walked around the pool and up alongside the flowers. Following them up the slope, she wondered who or what had made the echo. Thinking back over it, Pika realized that she wasn't sure if she had actually heard the voice with her ears, or inside her head. Shaking her head in confusion she debated weither or not this was actually her dream, or someone elses. 'But how could it be?' she argued with herself, 'I am not close enough to anyone at the moment to be sharing dreams...' pausing at this thought she looked up and realized she had reached the top of the slope, and looked forward.

The creek continued onward into a forest of snowing peach trees. Petals fell like a riot of confetti from the branches, carpeting the ground. Smiling she looked around for the path of pink flowers and noticed it was now veering away from the creek. Turning to follow it she walked into the forest...

She returned to the dream again a few nights later. Standing on the trail of pink flowers, she looked back and could barely see where it had veered off from the little stream. Turning forward, she glanced upward through the arching branches of the flowering peach trees. Lacey cotton candy fluff weaved it's way through the image of the branches until the boughs look fit to eat. She began walking along the path again, scanning ahead and around through the trees.

It really was quite breathtaking. She had always had a soft spot for flowering trees, and the veritable thundershower of petals was like icing on a cake for her eyes. 'If only I had someone to enjoy it with,' the thought came unbidden to her mind. 'Oh don't whine,' she replied to herself. 'It doesn't accomplish much and just reminds you of why you're upset.' But she really did wish there was someone there with her. She wondered again who had echoed her the last time...

Strolling along she listened to the buzzing and whisperings of the orchard-like forest. It smelled heavenly and the sky always seemed to be bright here. Along the pink flower trail grew lush grasses the seemed to hug the bases of the peach trees protectively. Little twitter birds darted among the branches as she travelled along the path.

Pika had been walking for some time now when she fully realized that there were no other types of trees. 'It does seem odd...then again this is a dream, but a little variety would be nice,' she considered. As if responding to her thoughts the path of pink flowers began to shift in hue from pink, to red, to orange and on through all the colours of the rainbow.

She began to run as she noticed the colours laying out in the distance. The path was no longer straight now either. Curving and twisting along, it resembleded a carelessly fallen hair ribbon looping around on itself. Pika began to breath more deeply after only a few moments of running. 'I hate dream running,' she thought. 'It never feels like you're getting anywhere.' In this case though, it appeared she was as the rainbow path suddenly tappered off as the orchard of peach blossoms came to and end as well.

Before her rose a hill and atop it sat a large, very large tree. Decked out in flowers like the past forest, this one was white to porcelain pink in folliage. The trunk was covered in a soft silver looking bark and as Pika approached it she could see small rivlets of glistening sap seeping out and down the trunk. Jaw dropped in amazment, she reached out to the huge tree and tried to encircle it with her arms. Not even close. She estimated she'd need five copies of herself to manage the feat of tree hugging. Staring upward the numerous branches arced over her like a gothic cathedral. Petals snowed down on her and the lavender grass was almost invisible under the assult.

"Now this is something to share," she called out delightedly.

'Something to share,' a voice echoed from around her.

Surprise flooded her with excitement and made her stomach feel full of butterflies. 'It's the same as last time!' she thought, internally jumping up and down. Carefully, Pika looked around for the source of the voice. Not spotting it, she walked around the trunk of the giant cherry tree. It definately was a cherry tree. Its smell confirmed it even if the sap hadn't. On the opposite side she found a lower branching and grabbed hold of it.

Pulling herself upwards she tried talking to the echo, "You going to tell me where you are? What are you?" Standing on the crotch of the branch she wasn't too far off the ground at all, so she started to shimmy upward into the depths of the flowered branches. She normally wasn't that great at tree climbing but this was a dream so of course she could here. There wouldn't have been much fun otherwise.

'What are you?' the voice seemed to echo inside her head.

"Me? I asked you first!" she cried indignantly.

The voice seemed to pause, 'you have to find me first...'

Gritting her teeth in determination she teetered out along another branch and swung up to the next. Higher and higher she climbed the whole time combing the tree for something that seemed to be enjoying taunting her. Sweat trickled down her back and she thought unpleasantly about finding the echo voice and making it climb up to find her next time.

Finally she had gotten high enough to stick her head above the blossoming foliage and look around. She could see out pretty far into the distance now and resisted the urge to closely examine how far off the ground she was. Rather too far out on the branch she realized, she ducked back in to continue searching for the echo.

Looking back along the branch she was standing on and downward, she noticed something she hadn't spotted on the way up; a hollow in one of the main center branches of the trunk. Edging along and then dropping lower, she continued back towards the trees center. By this point her hair was snarled and filled with petals and tangle caught twigs. Comming up to the hollow she peeked in on tip toe. She could barely see in for it was too high but she did notice that there appeared to be something glowing within the tree.

"Are you in there?" she whispered.

There was no reply.

Debating the intelligence of her action she reached up and stuck her arm into the bole and felt around. Her fingers brushed bark and leaf litter and then something...smooth. Gingerly she grabbed the object and slowly lifted it out of the tree. Eyes widening she stared at what she had found; a shiney red lollypop, and it appeared to be glowing....

It was late the next night and Pika was impatiently waiting to fall asleep. After taking the glowing lollypop out of the giant cherry tree, she had immediately awoken from the dream to find herself tangled in her blankets and halfways to lying on the floor. Laying back in bed she closed her eyes and felt the familiar feeling of sleep flood her body.

She blinked and opened her eyes. Looking around she saw she was sitting at the base of the great tree on a carpet of petals. She quickly glanced down too see if the lolly was still in her hands but it was not. Disappointed she stood and looked out over the peach tree forest. It was stunning to look at, but for some reason the orchard was no longer shedding petals. Startled Pika looked up. No petals rained on her from the great cherry tree either. Saddened even more so now, she walked around the tree, and right into a child.

"Oh my goodness," Pika exclaimed in awe of the dark form before her. "I am not alone then? Who are you?" The child was almost to Pika's shoulders in height and had no disernable features. Void of colour, the being was the hue of shadow and absorbed the light around it. Then, she noticed the red lollypop hovering inside the being.

"Who am I?" the child echoed. "I am the creator of this dream. Who are you?" she, it sounded like a she at any rate, vehemently replied. Stepping forward the child pointed a finger at Pika and tossed her head in a fashion that implied she was older then her size suggested.

Taken aback Pika giggled nervously, "I am just a dreamer sharing your dream I think. It feels like we are sharing it anyways...don't you feel it?"

The girl shadow seemed to consider the words carefully and then said, "I suppose you are right. I was just startled that's all. I haven't seen anyone ever before. Not here anyways. I have this strange feeling like we've met before." The child skipped back a step and bowed, shifting from foot to foot. "So, what do you want to play? I do think I was in this dream first, and I want to enjoy it."

Pika sighed, "I supposed hide and seek would be ok?"

"Um, no. Follow the leader is much better. Try and keep up with me now." The girl took off with a dash. Following, Pika moaned internally at having to run again.
