Ofra Haza
Nov. 19, 1957 - Feb. 23, 2000

Ofra Haza was an Israeli singer of Yemenite descent, gaining popularity and renoun all over the world. She released album after album in languages ranging from Hebrew, English, Arabic, French, Spanish, and even Aramaic. She was known in some places as 'The Madonna of the Desert' and even many people who aren't fans of her style of music agree that she had a voice of an angel.
She combined traditional Jewish and Yemenite rythms and tunes with modern techno and dance, creating very unique and lovely music, often in one main language with a second in bridges or choruses. She was one of the few foreign singers to put a song such in a different language onto the British charts (one of her biggest hits, 'Im Nin Alu', which is sung in Hebrew and English and has at leats two versions.)
She wrote almost all of her music and lyrics, sometimes with help by Betzale'el Aloni. Many people have heard her music and not known it, as she sometimes sang background for various songs, including a song by Paula Abdul, and a song by Sarah Brightman. She was the voice of Yocheved, the mother of Moses, in Prince of Egypt. Most of her music was about love, or promoting peace throughout the world.
She died Feb. 23rd, 2000, of complications of AIDS.
