Welcome to Gaia! ::

This thread is dedicated to one of the most brilliant satirical humorists and phillosophers ever to put pen to paper: Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

He has brought tears of laughter while complimenting people for their short-comings, making us all feel like fools in the most enjoyable way possible.

He has written such classics as Cat's Cradle, Slaughterhouse-Five, Breakfast of Champions, Player Piano, Sirens of Titan, and countless others. Not only that, but he has had his work published since the mid-sixties all the way to 1997, when he released Timequake.

What are your thoughts on Vonnegut?
Cat's Cradle and Breakfast of Champions are two of my favorites ever. Mother Night is one of two books I have ever finished in one sitting. Slaughterhouse Five was the book that got me to start reading recreationally. eek

A friend of mine wrote a short story and sent it to him and actually received a response - his story torn into bits, stuffed into an envelope with * as the return address. xd

God bless you, Kurt Vonnegut.
I've only read one book by this author so far - it was Cat's Cradle. Kind of... twisted, I would say. I really enjoyed it, though. Vonnegut's writing carries the kind of style I like most - not overpacked with detail, quite simple, full of hidden humour. The story was pretty grotesque but alegories are ok, as long as they're not overdone (like in some books by A. Camus... I respect him a lot, I really do, but some of his works make me wonder if he'd thought all of his readers were going to be complete idiots?). To convey not-so-shallow philosophy with absurd which is actually absurd (and not some crazy crack) is not an every-day ability. Vonnegut seems to have it.
I love Kurt Vonnegut. I've read several of his books. I think God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater was one of my favorites, but I've really never read a bad book by the man. Kilgore Trout is probably my favorite character.
I've never read a book by him before but I read the short story harrison bergeron in grade 10 english but I wasn't too fond. I started to read hocus pocus yesterday and so far I love it. I have heard only good things about him
I love Vonnegut as well...Slaughterhouse Five is my favorite, closely followed by Breakfast of Champions. All of his books that I've read were good though 3nodding
Kurt Vonnegut was one of the authors (along with Joseph Heller) that got me into post-modernism. Cats Cradle is one of my favorites, but I also like The Sirens of Titan, especially the "Rented a Tent" chant. Vonnegut's sardonic humor really tickles the ivories, but he can sometimes be too pessemistic for my tastes.

Also, buying his books in bookstores can be very expensive.
I don't often read books just because I liked the movie, but that's sadly what happened. I saw part of Slaughterhouse Five, and I wanted to read the book. I also saw Breakfast of Champions. Both of those books were great, the latter probably the funniest book I've ever read. Funny and also sort of serious at the same time.

I had read Harrison Bergeron in highschool as well. I thought the movie they made was pretty good, even though it was (as so often happens) very different from the book.
After discovering The Sirens of Titan in the back of my Mom's book shelf I've been hooked. Kurt Vonnegut's work is superb; the stories are always very interesting. He is by far one of my favorite authors.

Sparkly Prophet

my dad hooked me onto vonnegut when i was 13 by having me read Cat's Cradle. since then i've read all but 4 of his books, not including the short stories... i've read a bunch of those too, but it's hard to count them, considering not all of them have been collected into books. i love finding all the hoosier stuff in his books.. my parents are hoosiers. mrgreen but yeah... definately one of my favorite authors.

I think Slaughterhouse 5 and Cats Cradle are my two favorites of his.
I've only read Breakfast of Champions, but I plan to read more.
i love everything i've read by him, but player piano was by far my favorite.
it was one of those books where i read the last page and then turned it over and read the first page again. i don't think i put the book down for literally 24 hours, until i had read it through twice.
i love him, my favorite is cats cradle.

"do turtle's necks contract or fold?"
I'm suprised this thread has only one page. I've only read Cat's Cradle and Slaughterhouse 5.. My dad said they were good, and he was right. Very bizarre books though..Anybody have a recommendation for a Vonnegut book?
