Welcome to Gaia! ::

Okay, I somehow doubt that very many, if any of you have read it, but has anyone read "Beowulf"? It's an epic (meaning that it's about heroes and it's long) poem written sometime about the 8th century or so. I had to read it for my first year university english literature class, and to be perfectly honest, I loved it... i wasn't like shakespeare, with all the "thees" and "thous" and being really hard to read, it was actually very quick and easy. It's a classic adventure about a guy who runs around and kills monsters and stuff. So just wondering if anyone had read it, and what they thought.
*raises hand* I read it last year for my Brit Lit class, and absolutely adored it!
i read it in 6th grade
Great story, definitely a classic piece of literature, and the influences of Christianity are moderately subtle, but still a little neat to consider.

Also worth checking out, if you haven't already, is the Epic of Gilgamesh, which is one of the first works ever written down that remains extant.
I liked it... it was a really good work of literature. If you go through it in detail, there's so much symbolism & other in-depth stuff (much more under the surface). Otherwise, it's enjoyable to just read it for the story. biggrin
It was okay. x_x; Once again, another victim of English class overanalyzing. ><; I did a huge comparison of Beowulf to the Hobbit though. XD That was kind of fun..
I read it last year, it was alright. In class we had to draw how we imagined Grendel rolleyes . I can imagine how this story laid the foundation for the basic hero story today.
I read it in seventh grade and I thought it was confusing, but when I read it again last year I thought it was really good and a great piece of literature.
I've read two different modern english translations of Beowulf and loved them both. Because of this book Hrothgar is my most beloved name.
i loved that book.

Yeah, I did a paper comparing it to Tolkien (mostly the Rohirrim).
I read it a few years ago in high school English class. I personally didn't care for it that much...Beowulf was a stuck up macho loser. He was like, "Hi guys I'm the best! Look at me, I'm so great!" I felt sorry for poor Grendel...he couldn't help it....he was just hungry.... crying poor guy....and his poor mother! crying crying crying

He he... actually, I just read the Epic of Gilgamesh (not the whole thing, but a fairly extensive overview in my mythology class a few days ago... so yeah...
i read beowulf for class, it was alright i wouldn't of read it if it wasn't for class and i read Gilgamesh for class and the Seafarer the poem.
I haven't read it yet, but I know I'm going to because it's an assignment for my L.A. (language arts) class.
